Summary: Great DVD Player
Review: Bought this DVD player as an open-box item for $... Great deal. Plays DVD's flawlessly, build quality much better than the highly touted Panasonic RV-31K. Excellent video and audio.
Ample outbound connections (S-Video, Component video etc.)
I don't care that it doesn't play CD-R's, CD-RW's and MP3's.... This is a DVD player and a GREAT one at that! Buy a CD player to play audio CD's.....By the way, this unit DOES play certain CD-R's. Try it, you'll like it!

Summary: Unexciting
Review: First off, when you turn the unit on, it is not really on. It requires at least another button press before it decides to turn "on".

However, the worst aspect about this product is it takes forever for the tray to eject from a cold boot. For example, I click the power button. But the unit is not on, it is on "standby". Then I click the eject button, and it takes an agonizingly long time for the tray to eject. This sort of defeats the purpose of even having DVDs. I mean, one of the great aspects of DVDs is to be able to quickly locate a favorite scene. I don't want to have to fumble around with the hardware and WAIT while salivating about which scene I want to watch.

It plays DVDs ok, but so does my friends really cheap panasonic, which ejects much faster than this unit. You click the eject button and wham! there the DVD is ejecting.

I have to admit, we live in a world of buttons. You click a button, and something is supposed to happen. Sony seems to have subverted this logic because when you click a button on this product, NOTHING happens.

Lame.

Summary: Quality Basic Player with Exceptional Laser Head
Review: I bought my DVD player to play DVD movies very well - ie. good picture, good sound. I didn't buy it to play 'copied' audio cd's, or MP3's so I dont care if this unit doesn't do that. There are DVD players out there that will do all that & more for the same price as this Sony - but at the end of the day ask yourself 'are they cutting corners to give me all that?'. The Sony is a stylish slim-line machine WHICH does the main job it was intended to - play dvd's (it does play purchased audio cd's, by the way). Ask yourself this question before buying your DVD Player - Is a machine with basic features but a quality laser important - or a machine with a mediocre laser and stacks of mostly unncessary features (eg. zoom) important?

Summary: Great Picture!
Review: I purchased this DVD player a few months ago along with the rest of my home theater system. I investigated every aspect of the player and compared it with others in the same price class. Without a doubt the Sony DVP-NS300S is superior. The Phillips and Panasonic do not produce quite the same, tight picture. Plus, I read that the Sony DVD players read scratched DVDs the best [just a note if you rent more than buy]. I'm not sure about the other review, but I have no trouble playing CD-Rs, but CD-RWs do not play.

Summary: The NS300 can actually read CD-R's
Review: I'm just writing to correct some information written by other reviewers... This DVD player does indeed read CD-R's, I have verified it with burned VCD's I have created. (But not SVCD)

I suppose wether or not it works may depend on the brand of CD-R media you are using, but at least the Sony CD-R's media works flawlessly for me.

Overall this is a great player for the price. It's easy to use, has great picture quality, and I have yet to find a DVD movie that it will freeze on. (Except when caused by disc scratches) I'm very satisfied.

Summary: More Trouble Than It's worth...
Review: If you are looking for DVD features only, this will do it if you are concerned over the Sony name considering the low price. However, I would opt for a different manufacture. It turns out that this does not support CDR's. I rather get something in the same price range that does.

Summary: Do you rent DVDs?
Review: If you rent DVDs, this is not for you. The player gets stuck even for minor scratches and dust. I was able to play the same DVDs on PlayStation and also on other players. If looks could mislead, this is it.

Summary: Nice DVD player, but not worth the price~
Review: It's design and the brand name caught my eyes at the first glance. And I picked it because it supports VCD as well, but later I found out my brother's (less expensive) DVD player from a different infamous manufacturer (...) can do more than this sony does. Especially this sony does not support CDR videos, which really makes me wanna return it. I am not saying this sony (...), it does it's job and very realiable, but if you are planning to play some CDRs or want more "unnecessary features", then go for a different one.

Summary: This SONY DVD player Rocks
Review: This DVD player rocks. I also own an Hitachi P250; It was great for a while, but lately started to freeze up/lock up, so I started shopping around for a low priced/high feature/reliable DVD player. I felt it was a toss up between this one and the Panasonic DVS31. I tried all my disks that gave me problems with my Hitachi, and all is well with this SONY. It works great, is VERY sleek/trimline, much smaller than the Hitachi. There is only one problem the product fact sheet here on AMAZON indicates this player will play CD-R/RW, but it does not. I have seen the Panasonic in a store and know it does. If that is a factor for you then the SONY 400 does play CD-R/RW, but is also more expensive. All in all, I give this player a very high rating! It plays great, looks terrific, and is easy to use.

Summary: Excellent!
Review: This is probably one of the best DVD players on the market. The picture is crystal clear and the sound is extremely good. This DVD player exceeds the required standards! I strongly recommend this DVD player to prospective customers who want a high quality player for a good price. In my view, Sony is the best when it comes to DVDs and VCRs. Buy this player and you will not be disappointed!
