Summary: Stay away from panasonic dvd players
Review: Mine just went dead on me after only 13 months. Apparently, Panasonic's DVD players are currently involved in a class action lawsuit. http://www.dvdsettlement.com
Basically, my until starts to flicker and just gives the error code HO2 when I try to play a DVD. After searching several newsgroups, I discovered that this is a widespread problem. $240+ down the drain. STAY AWAY from Panasonic DVD players

Review: Mpeg3 may have been great but new MPEG4 and Portend are the future. Instead of 5.1 ratio new receivers are going with 6.1 and 7.1 to handle DTS and THX.
It may be a good close out item but will not stand up to the march of newer better technology.
Handset remotes need to be IR,illuminated and capable programmable code because most user have cross branded home theatre systems.
Give us what we need and we will buy it.
There was information released today on a new type of algorithym
That is 4 times the capacity and better contrast with higher quality sound and permiits CD copying for Pay on demand DVD movies and 7.1 aspect ration sound(3 front, 3 rear and 1 center speaker that puts you in the orchestra and scene. All you need is a script.
Who knows someday we may be able to have a Web cam and audio input(Kareoke style) thata puts us in the movie.

Summary: an excellent player
Review: My husband and I received this DVD player as a Christmas gift. We found this very easy to hook up and use. The picture was really sharp too and it has excellent sound. We have used it just about every day since we got it and we bought some DVDs and rented some too and all played easily. We have had no problems with this unit and are very pleased with it.

Review: On the plus side, the next-lowest price player that will give you progressive scan video decoding this good costs twice as much as this one.On the negative side, this is one cheaply built player - don't expect it to last long. There's a reason why Panasonic only has a 90 day labor warranty - they don't expect it to last much longer than that. A scan through the reviews will reveal that dead players is a common customer experience. My experience was much the same - purchased in October, dead in May. So, should you get this player? You should, if you want really good progressive scan video and if you are OK with a player that you expect to replace in six to twelve months. By then, better players may be available, and the money you spend now may prove to be a long-term bargain - you get great video right away, and when your player dies, you can look for a better (and better-made) one, which may well be available then even if it isn't now. As for me, I'm buying a second one. The cheapest player I've been able to find that I'm sure does a substantially better job costs about fifteen times as much (the Camelot Round Table), and for that, I can buy and throw away a lot of RP-56's.

Summary: Good player, great picture!
Review: PROS: Awesome picture, great value
CONS: Interface quirks For a Progressive Scan DVD Player, the Panasonic RP56 is a great value. It plays a host of different formats such as CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and VCDs. The picture quality is unbelievably clear and crisp on a good television and the sound is also crystal clear and well separated when piped through a stereo amp and decent speakers. The player also seems relatively sturdy and well made. I haven't had any severe read errors or any other problems with playing or reading DVDs. All of my DVDs including the dirty and scratched Netflix DVDs that I've played have worked fine. So, in those respects, I can't complain at all. The only problems are some interface quirks that can be annoying. The player doesn't remember where you left off on the DVD when you turn the player off or go back to the menu, which to me is weird. I'm sure there's a setting somewhere that solves that problem, but it really should be automatic. And pressing open to insert a DVD when you turn the unit on takes a little while b/c it has to show you an annoying "Welcome to DVD World" message, which is truly superfluous. Other than that, I really can't complain about this player's overall performance... it works and performs great where it counts.

Review: The best one from DVD players that brings HD and consumer friendly front panel functions at a normal price. Excellent HD quality when combined with Philips 55PP9401 Projection TV. The digital audio output makes it a good chose for the home theater with 5.1 surround sound. If you looking for a good DVD player this is your chose.

Review: The Panasonic DVD-RP56 Progressive-Scan DVD Player is one of the best DVD players on the market, with excellent picture and Virtual Surround Sound and Bass Plus audio enhancement features.
The Optical digital-audio output is really awesome! The 5-speed smooth-motion scan is a natty feature that's very useful, and the Surround Sound is sure to wake up the neighbours!

Summary: Same experience: mine broke after 2 yrs
Review: The picture quality is excellent for its price class, and I liked the way fast-slow foward/reverse works. However, after 2 yrs mine died. It would not eject the DVD. I would hear a rattling noise from the motor when I powered on the player, but the tray wouldn't budge. I couldn't pull the tray out, it froze in position. I had to open the player to retreive the DVD. My next DVD player will be non-Panasonic. I used to be a huge fan of Panasonic, but not anymore. A DVD player should last at least 5 years.

Review: This is my first DVD player. I had it out of the box and in use within minutes. I don't really know what other DVD players do, but this one does more than I'll probably ever use. I do believe that this is a nicer machine than what some of my friends have (and I paid less).
