Summary: Cheap plastic parts, Will break in less than a year
Review: I agree with other writers that the RP56 has lots of great features for the price, however it is not worth the price if it breaks in 7 months. I bought mine in November, and it is broke by June. Best Buy doesn't carry this model any more even though it is less than one year old.

Review: I bought my DVD player October of 2001 primarily because of the video quality in S-VHS (I don't have a component video TV) and MP3 playback for CD-Rs. It has worked well since then. The VCDs I've made with my Mac work great. The DVDs I've made with my Mac work great. Yes, the quality of the mechanics is pretty lame and the unit weighs next to nothing, but I do take care of my gear. I have yet to encounter the "HO2" spindle motor error complained about so often. The unit is slow to power up and eject the tray and the remote is pretty lightweight, too. But then keep in mind how much this unit costs.

Summary: Great player for about a year, then it quits working
Review: I bought my RP-56 one year and two weeks ago. It has stopped paying discs. I now see an error message "H02" and the player stops. I did some searching on the internet and this appears to be a very common problem with all Panasonic DVD players. As far as I can tell, only Panasonic can make this repair. H02 indicates there is a "spindle server error". The disc doesn't spin. I tried taking the case off and helping the player start by giving the disc holder a spin with my finger and that actually makes it work! Luckily, I purchased the extended service option, so I can still get it serviced for free. I bought this player for $..., back on 9/2001, and paid $... for a four year service plan and dang it, I'm gonna use this player for the next three years! I will not buy another panasonic DVD player and would not recommend it.

Summary: Don't Buy This DVD
Review: I bought this DVD after much research, thinking that this would ensure that I would not get a lemon. I read other reviews including a few that warned me away, but I couldn't imagine that a DVD player could be as terrible as the reviewers said. After all, this is perfected technology-what could go wrong? I'll tell you what could go wrong-everything! This DVD player is really a piece of junk. One DVD will play fine - except for a few skips here and there. The next DVD will play fine until about the middle, then the image will start jumping and jerking and the voice track will get off. Stopping and starting the DVD sometimes helps, but for the most part, it can't be fixed, so I just have to abandon watching the movie. The problem with a DVD that is unreliable is that you just never know if you'll be able to watch an entire movie. I haven't bothered to call Panasonic since I really believe the other reviewers now who said that Panasonics customer service is useless - and the return warranty ran out before the DVD started misbehaving. I plan to give this piece of junk to the Salvation Army and try again - and the next time I will believe the reviews. If someone says the DVD is a piece of junk, it probably is just that - junk!

Summary: Great inexpensive DVD player
Review: I bought this player from Circuit City for $229 and I really liked the picture in progressive scan mode. Later I found out that this player has Faroudja FLI2200 de-interlacing chip that is well-known for its quality. The picture is flicker-free and crystal clear. And overall RP-56 doesn't have any known problems.Philips Q50 has the same chip and the picture is probably even better but its price is twice as high. And according to many reports from the users it has some occasional problems like freezing once or twice per movie for a second or so. Check avsforum.com for mor information on Q50. I would give RP-56 5 stars if it would be able to play DVD from other regions. Philips and some other players can be made accepting DVD from other regions while Panasonic can't. So, if you don't need this capability and would like to get a progressive scan DVD player, I would recommend getting RP-56.

Summary: The VERY BEST DVD player for the (dollar amount) price range - period.
Review: I did *alot* .. no I did *TONS* of research on a DVD player for my 1998 Sony KV-32S40 32", trinitron television. It's a fantastic TV and I needed a fantastic DVD player to match it. After perusing the internet for about a month I came to the following conclusion as the most important feature: Video RAM DAC What is Video RAM DAC? A standard (interlaced is the technical term) DVD player has a Video RAM DAC of 27 MHz/10-bit. 27MHz is 2x oversampling for interlaced video and no oversampling for progressive. By going to 54 MHz, you now have 2x oversampling for progressive. (4x for interlaced). The difference is somewhat minimal in video quality but for (dollar amount) (...) you get the *best* DVD video quality for an interlaced player and a great start when you uprade to HDTV with the progressive side of the player. You can't go wrong!

Summary: Glad I bought the ESP
Review: I don't normally purchase the ESP plan when I purchase electronics, but for some unknown reason I did with my RP56. Glad I did. This will be the second time I've had to bring it back. HO2 error this time, was HO6 last. It's also had episodes where it's refused to read a DVD on one day, then it's fine with it the next. No the DVD was in perfect condition. Works great, but only when it works.

Summary: Excellent Progressive Scan Player from Panasonic
Review: I have a Sony projection system (screen size is about 10.5 ft by 6 ft) and recently purchased this model to replace my non-progressive scan Panasonic 310 player. I can summarize by simply saying that the RP56 provides a gorgeous picture. The previous digital artifacts are almost completely gone. They have been replaced by a very filmlike effect. Along with this, the colors appear more vibrant which simply leads to a very enjoyable viewing experience. Moulin Rouge never looked this great.... HIGHLY recommended!
