Summary: Don't Believe the Hype!!!
Review: The first several reviews talk this dvd player up a lot. Sure, it is supposed to be durable, sturdy and well built. Yet when I rushed to plug in my new dvd player all I got was a scrabled menu and then blank lines on the display. The unit wouldn't stay powered on correctly, and the door for the cd player didn't even open. I also tried calling Konka customer support in a last ditch effort but all I could get was voice mail of random people at their office. VERY disappointing. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM IF YOU WANT A LOW COST DVD PLAYER....

Summary: bummer of a gift
Review: I put this on my wishlist after I saw it as a amazon editor's pick. My wife got me one for christmas. I hooked it up and never got it to register a dvd was in the player (after trying several). The remote also seemed to only register 1 out of 10 times. Now we have to return it.... :-(

Summary: Must have gotten a bad one...
Review: Well, I ordered my Konka after researching a lot of other low priced DVD players and I thought that it might be a good one. I was wrong. When I recieved it, I excitedly unpacked it, hooked it up to the tv, and proceeded to place a audio CD in to (I hadn't bought a DVD yet since I was waiting to see if it would work). It went in just fine and thing seemed like they would work, except I couldn't hear the drive spinning. I didn't think that was a problem until an error popped up on the screen. When I tried to retrieve the CD from the player, the tray wouldn't come out! It took a complete power down before I could get it to open. Then, after I shut the tray with nothing in it, the error popped up again. To make a long story short, none of my CDs would work in the thing and the error would pop up seconds after closing the tray whether anything was in there or not. I have since then returned it and am plannign on buying a Toshiba, which I have heard good reviews about. Sorry Konka, but I think you have a while to go before you can make as good of products as the "big boys".

Summary: THE MASTER REVIEW YOU HAVE TO READ...IS HERE!!!
Review: Alright. Now, I know you are definitely considering purchasing this Konka product, otherwise you wouldnt be browsing in this particular section of the Amazon.com site.

Well, first off, I must say that the brand "Konka" just happens to be THE largest electronic distributor in China! They have also been making and manufacturing alota products and parts for other famous brand names, such as: Sony, Panasonic, Yamaha, JVC, etc. I know you may find this hard to believe, but it is "TRUE."

The Konka KD-1800U1 is a totally well made, mid-range product. It is easily an under estimated and under rated product of the year 2000. But that is all because majority of todays population today have never heard of this brand name before, therefore do not reconize them.

Here is my review as I broke it down conclusively:

PICTURE & PLAYABILITY: 9.5/10

Very high, picture quality here! Video is sharp, crisp and well defined. Only downfall is that video occasionally does freeze temporarily when playing video. I found this extoradinary quality to be easliy ranked up with the big boy brands, such as Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, etc.

SOUND: 9.5/10

Again, very crisp, and crystal clear pure digital optical sound. Whether youre using it with a Dolby or DTS reciever, either way you will be well satisfied and very pleased. Again, Konka's sound sits up top with the big boys brands!

FEATURES: 9.5/10

What else could you possibly ask for? For the price you pay for this product, trust me...you find everything here! It is THE complete package to own! EX. DTS, Dolby 5.1, Digital Coaxial, S-Video,....WOW! Note, that I would only consider using this for personal use, and not business. For business rich add ons, look to spend at least $1000-$1500.

To simply to conclude this product: GET IT NOW!!! ITS A BARGAIN FOR THE PRICE!!!

I USE MINE, AS AN EXTRA SPARE DVD PLAYER, AND I GOT IT FOR $100, U.S,......ITS AWESOME!!! NO QUESTIONS ASKED!

NOW, GO!!!

Summary: KD1800U1 does support DTS
Review: Just want to point out one mistake in the Amazon review above. This player does have DTS digital out. The older model KD1800U does not. By the way, the pictures shown above are KD1800U, which is replaced by KD1800U1.

Summary: Replace the batteries in remote, it may help
Review: The sound and picture are great for this player. This player is very good looking. And it is elegantly simple. It doesn't have component video outputs because 99% people who buy a sub $200 player don't own a high-end TV with component video inputs. As others have pointed out, response to remote command is slow and you have to press buttons hard. But it gets alot better after I replace the batteries with a pair of fresh Energizer. There is slight noise when playing a DVD, not loud like others people have described. The noise is just as loud as my Sony VCR. Also when I adjust picture parameters on my panasonic TV while playing a movie, the player frozen and I have to reset it by unplugging. I am not sure whether this will happen with other TVs, but it's not a big problem since I don't adjust picture parameters often and I can do it while movie is not playing.

Summary: Problems ar obvious
Review: Again and again, people keep complaining about the noise of the drive and the remote - yup, it's true. First, the remote buttons are inconsistent and sometimes don't respond at all. Second, the drive does have some noise and it can be bothersome. The picture and sound are great but I'm returning mine to Amazon. Konka needs to address these complaints because they are common among buyers of this unit.

Summary: High Quality DVD Player For A Low Price
Review: My Konka DVD player has worked flawlessly since I received it about a month ago. The picture and sound quality are superb. This is without a doubt the best looking dvd player under $200. I have had no problems at all with the unit locking up, and have never had to power the system down because of a glitch. The remote could be layed out a little better with bigger buttons. The batteries that come with the remote are not very good. I replaced them with some alkaline batteries and the remote responded much better. I have played dvd's, vcd's, and audio cds and they all work great. I am very happy with my purchase.

Summary: Buyer Beware - Avoid the Konka DVD player!
Review: My wife and I received a Konka DVD player through Amazon for our wedding and it has been a complete nightmare. The first player we received had real trouble tracking CDs and DVD playback was heavily distorted. As a new vendor from China, Konka has no established service outlets in the United States so there is nowhere you can take it for warranty service. I wrote a letter to Amazon to see if they could be any help given their historic focus on the customer experience. Amazon then sent me a series of cryptic responses (e.g. "We received your e-mail and appreciate your comments. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help.") which were obviously generated by a computer. No help.

Then one day we mysteriously received another Konka from Amazon (without having asked for one) and upon installing it discovered that it was completely defective and incapable of any playback.

Unless you're a glutton for punishment I suggest you avoid the Konka DVD player and consider buying from a vendor with a legitimate service network. By Murphy's law, if there are no easy ways to service the player, it will break.
