Summary: GREAT PLAYER AT A GREAT PRICE
Review: Got this player a few days ago and have played about 10 dvds, 5 vcds and 3 mp3 disks. The Toshiba SD2710 performed 99.9% flawlessly with one brief lockup on a cheap foreign vcd that might have had a little dirt on it. It only paused for about 3 seconds and then continued playing. The remote is smaller, but you'll probably like the extremely cool on-screen menu so much that you won't mind that. This is a fairly new model that is PACKED with great features. I really like the black level picture adjustment (really enhances the picture by making the blacks blacker) and also the setting that allows you to enhance the audio portion of the soundtrack so you don't have to keep turning the tv up & down to hear people talking. I shopped extensively on the web and hit all the major stores and I couldn't find a better player in this price range (mid-100's). If you need an intelligently-designed, easy to use lower-priced player, I would highly recommend the Toshiba SD2710.

Summary: Fairly Good So Far, but LCD Info. is Poor.
Review: I returned my Panasonic RV31 for this unit, primarily tempted by the 10 free DVD rentals included if you buy before 12/31. It also has both Coax and Optical digital outs which I thought to be important. Although I had problems with broken digital optical cables previously, I found one that didn't work with the Panasonic could work in this Toshiba model.

Although I also tried to find a digital audio coax cable for the Toshiba, after going to 6 stores, I found that most sales people are clueless about audio coax. When they hear coax they automatically think you are talking about a cable TV connection, or want to sell you an A/V RCA connection. There seems to be far few digital Coax than Optical cables, and if you go with the 6' Monster Coax - it's expensive at ($). After I hooked my unit up, I found that Radio Shack makes a good audio 6' Coax for only ($).

The Toshiba 2710 has a nice picture and plays regular CDs well. I did not try CD-Rs or MP3s. I liked the on-screen menu system of the Toshiba a bit better than Panasonics and thought the Zoom feature may be neat, but will probably not use it much. I have a few complaints about the Toshiba DVD, however. 1) One DVD I played on the 2710 had a few smuges and could not be played until it was clean; it would probably have played dirty on the Panasonic. 2) The Toshiba LCD does not display track number or much other info. about a CD, and it has few controls on the DVD; you must rely on the remote. The Panasonic has a jog dial, more front panel controls, and mcuh better info. on the LCD, 3) On a wide screen movie, the Panasonic has very black up and down frames; the Toshiba's frames have more gray. The Panasonic borders look much nicer.

In all, I was hooked by the 10-free-be rentals by Toshiba, yet will probably be happy with it.

Summary: Audio stopped working
Review: After a little over a year, and very little use, the audio stopped working (its output can hardly be heard). Of course the 90 day warranty is well past due now, so this thing is now a piece of junk. Obviously, I am not the only one with this issue, just look at the other reviews.

Summary: Just to add to the mass of other negative reviews...
Review: I bought a new DVD player recently and decided to give my year-and-a-half-old Toshiba to my mother. She decided to give it a try a few days ago but couldn't hear any audio. I thought she configured something wrong in the menus or in her tv, so I said I'd give it a look, thinking that I'd find the problem in 5 minutes. Well, to cut to the chase, I didn't, and now I'm reading all those reviews telling the same tale...

I guess I'll have to buy another one today to replace this piece of crap... Don't worry, I won't go near any Toshiba unit...

Summary: so far so good
Review: So far I have had no problems with this machine, but I've had it only about four months. Some of the negative reviews complained about the quality of playback concerning mp3 and CDR. I use this machine more as a cd player than dvd player, and I have noticed no problems with mp3/CDR. The sound comes out of my receiver perfectly, plus it has the random feature available for the MP3's. The one small thing I've noticed, though, is that it can cut off about the first half-second of each track when a cd is played. As far as DVD goes, I've had no problems at all.
Also, I have found that since I wrote the first review that a lot of the problems are caused by the machine overheating. Don't stack it on top of cable boxes or anything else. Let it sit alone and it may help cure the problem of the movie being unviewable about halfway through it.

Summary: Stopped working after 18 months
Review: The Toshiba SD2710 was fine while it lasted. After a momentary power outage while the unit was running it stopped working. This was after 18 months of light use. Replacing the fuse didn't help and having it on a surge protector didn't help. These low cost DVD players don't seem to last very long. I am replacing it with a Sony DVP SN325. I'll see how long that lasts.

Summary: disappointed owner
Review: I did a lot of research and found this DVD player to suit my needs perfectly, plus it was very reasonable. It worked fine for just over one year, conveniently until the end of the warranty, and then the audio cut out. It seems there have been a large number of other reviewers with the same problem. I would not recommend this DVD player to anyone. At least consider an extended warranty. You will need it!

Summary: No sound!!
Review: I lost the sound on my player too!!! There is no way to contact toshiba of course about this problem. I went through every menu option possible to try and fix the problem with no luck.

The sound is very faint on the analog out channels. Does anyone know if it still works on the digital out??? Maybe the digital sound still works. Post a relpy if you know the answer.

thanks.

ps I have a technical background and couldn't find anything obviously wrong with the circuit boards.
