Summary: Player went dead after 1/2 hour of first use!
Review: This Toshiba DVD SD2700 played for 1/2 hour then went completely dead! With no power, I could not get the disc out so I had to take it to an authorized dealer just to get it out to return. The electrical unit burnt out and now after 2 weeks in the repair shop the part is still on "national back-order" from Toshiba. A very big disappointment.

Summary: Good Product for The Price
Review: I bought a Toshiba SD2700 DVD player from Amazon.com and have found that this product produces better quality video and audio output than its competitors in this price rang. It has component video output for the best result of video... I connect it up with the regular RCA audio video cable (comes with the player) to my 36" Toshiba TV and Aiwa stereo system, and I am quite happy with the result. Haven't tried the component video connection yet, but guess that it will be awesome (planning to get a good Monster component cable). The only thing I hate is that the remote control does not have the glowing button to help in dark and it does not have TV control. Very difficult to search for the proper buttons in dark before you can remember all the buttons.

If you really need it to play MP3, you should go for SD2710...But I personally don't think that it is necessary.

After over 2 months usage, I found that the tray is already loose a little. Occationally it can not deliver the DVD into proper location for reading. Usually the second or third attempt will work. Perhaps it was damaged by my kids, because they don't use the close button and simply push the tray in.

Another good thing I have discovered is that it can read some scratched DVD's.

Summary: Good so far
Review: I bought it as the first DVD player. Seems pretty good feature wise.My main grouse remains that the initial set up is not easy and the remote does not have a glowing controls to help in dark.

Summary: PROS & CONS of Toshiba SD700 DVD Player
Review: PROS: Great price.
Excellent, features, performance & image quality.
Supports multiple digital sound technologies
(Dolby Digital, DTS, HDCD etc. )
Plays CDR's Cd's.

CONS: Doesn't play MP3's. on CD's.
WIDER than a vcr or cable box so it doesnt fit in cabinet that use standardized sizes for such things.
Instructions arent really that good...I connected it by trial & error.

OVERALL....Great Im very happy it. If yo are on a budget and still want features and performance...get this one!

Summary: Brought it back
Review: I wrote an earlier review praising this DVD player. But, the more movies we played, the more it would freeze up during play. The last 3 movies we watched (The Matrix, U-751, Eraser), it would freeze 10-15 times a movie. So, I called a few toshiba service centres in town and I got very inconsistent feedback on what the problem could be. Some would say..."Oh you need a firmware upgrade". But some would tell me that there are no upgrades available for the SD2700. With that information, I said to hell with this...it's going back to the store for a full refund.

Knowing that the sound and picture I was getting from Toshiba was awesome, I told myself that I would try Toshiba again, given that I probably had bought the SD2700 in a broken state. So, last week I went to the store and asked questions for almost 2 hours, of which DVD would meet my needs. It was a toss-up between Panasonic and Toshiba. I settled once again on the Toshiba, but an upgraded model from the SD2700...I bought the SD2710, which plays MP3's. So far it plays all the movies that the SD2700 didn't. I know that the SD2700 I bought was definitely broken, so don't let this review scare you.

I'm very happy with the SD2710.

Summary: Very good entry-level DVD player
Review: I've had the SD2700 for a few weeks and I am very satisfied with the unit's performance -- especially considering the price. I am running the analog audio to a Yamaha DSP-A1000 (which only outputs Dolby Pro Logic) and the S-video to a Sony 31-inch XBR^2. In spite of my slightly outdated reciever and monitor, the sound and picture are impressive. It has a good zoom function and lots of other features that seem to be lacking on similarly-priced units. The disk boots up pretty quick too.

Summary: Great DVD Player for the Price
Review: I have to say I have been very happy with my Toshiba DVD Player [...]. A friend and I did a lot of research before we bought this model (it was a toss-up from the 1600 or this one, and the 1600 was sold out). The set up process was very easy. We bought the S-Video cable for clearer picture, but either way, the picture is fine. The sound on this baby is great too! The only thing that [I do not like] (and it has to do with my TV) is that I have to go into Menu on my TV remote and then scroll down to the third option if I want to play a DVD. It can play difficult DVD's like I, Claudius (which on my computer DVD Player would freeze up). In all, I would recommend this player to anyone.
