Rating: Summary: Great value Review: The unit I just received has component output, in addition to S-video and composite, so there's obviously been an update since the original Amazon review. Also, PAL vs NTSC output is set via a preference menu item, not a button on the remote as it apparently used to be according to another reviewer. But it is still very easy to change the region (I just watched a bunch of R2 DVDs I'd bought from amazon.co.uk - until I unlocked the hidden menu the unit rejected them with "Wrong Region", but after telling the unit it's a R2 player they play fine). It's possible that the computer DVD drive used is RCP2-compliant, and if it is, that might limit the number of times you can change regions. At this price, I bought this unit just for R2 discs, so I don't care. Although the label on the back of the unit says 110V 60Hz, the spec section in the manual says 110-240V 50/60Hz, so if that were as important to me as it appears to be to the earlier reviewer, I'd confirm with Norcent whether it is really 240V-compatible before returning it (I doubt they'd remove that feature, as it would force them to manufacture different versions for different parts of the world).Picture quality (of PAL discs played back on an NTSC TV) is very good through both composite and S-video (haven't tried component, as both my component inputs are already in use). All in all, an excellent value.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant DVD Player! Review: This DVD player is the first one I've had as a set-top DVD Player. Before I Got it,I used my DVD-ROM on my PC..but since other people wanted to use the PC and I was sick of having to watch my DVDs "on a schedule",My dad got me this player for my birthday. I've had it since February 22nd,2003..which means I've had it more than a year..and It still works for me. I've read most of these reviews...and the reviewers say that theirs broke after a certain period of time. Well, mine's lastest OVER A YEAR...and plays anything I throw at it. The remote is difficult to understand at first.. but it grows on you. The great thing is that it's cheap..plays DVDs,VCDs,Kodak Picture CDs,MPEG and AVI files on CDs,CD-Rs,and MP3-CDs. Pick it up. 5/5 for Norcent's DP300.
Rating: Summary: Totally and Completely Useless Review: I wish I could give it lower than one star, it surely doesn't deserve even that. My boyfriend bought me this dvd player for my birthday, the end of January. We began having problems with it right away, it freezes up several times during a movie and sometimes the subtitles just keep popping up (even though we tried shutting them off about 20 times, this happened during "Once upon a time in Mexico"). Now it is mid-March and it has stopped recognizing DVD's so it now totally and completely useless, and it's been two months since we got it and don't have a receipt. My boyfriend paid $40.00 to be able to watch approximately 6-8 movies (at most), and it was a pain in the a$$ watching them. Don't buy this product!! if you know what's good for you.
Rating: Summary: VERY GOOD DEAL! Review: This player is worth every dollar. I have owned this player for 6 months. I bought it because my $800 Sony DVD player stopped working after only 3 years of use. Overall, this player is actually better than my Sony was. Yes, you read correctly. This player is better than my Sony! It is better for many reasons. The Norcent can play DVDs, CDs, CDRs, and even Kodak picture cds. My Sony could NOT play CDRs or Kodak picture cds. Also, the Norcent barely pauses when the layers are changing. Most of the time I don't even notice the layer change at all! With the Sony the layer change was very noticable. It would take at least half a second to change layers in the middle of the movie. This was always very annoying. The Norcent is a nice silver color which makes it very classy looking. I did have a brief problem with the player one day. Everytime I put in a DVD the subtitles would automatically come on and I had to turn them off. Also, the DVD would stop and then refuse to play at all. I fixed these problems by simply unplugging the player for 1 minute and replugging it in again. By doing this I reset the players settings and I have not had these problems since. I guess it was a fluke event. I doubt it will ever happen again. My biggest complaint about the Norcent is that in very dark movie scenes I can notice a lot of distortion in the background. This is annoying if you are watching a horror movie. If it wasn't for this problem the player would be perfect. Most people will be very satisfied with buying this player. Unfortunatly, I am planning to buy a different player because I am picky about the distrotion. I will likly end up spending a $1000 or more for a high-end player. Few people would feel the need to do this. I just happen to be a very picky person. Overall, if you are an average consumer you can't go wrong with this player. BUY IT!
Rating: Summary: What happened to it????? Review: I have had this player for 3 months...it no longer loads discs and Norcent has so far failed to return any of my calls ( approx 5 over the last month) or give me any sort of customer service...With a player at this price I suppose it is to be expected but at least the company could be more at least more concerned with some sort of customer service.
Rating: Summary: A Nice Cheap DVD Player Review: I got this player mainly for the multi-region function hack that I read from other customers, and for my daughters been able to watch the dvd+r's that I made for them. My first generation Sony player(cost 33 times of what I paid for this machine) that they were using did not read recordable dvds. Well, the multi-region hack did not work on this machine(yes, it didn't claim to be able to.). Some observations that I'd like to share with others: My player came with a manual that seemed to be returned, it had finerprints all over it. I looked inside and saw that the drive and the circuit board were marked manufactured Nov 2002! My guess is that this might be a reconditioned unit with updated firm ware. Some people complained about the sound. Try go to audio in the menu and make adjustment in SPDIF. My 4:3 Sony XBR tv.s auto Anamorphic function did not work with this player. It seems the DP300 only down convert picture to letterbox resolution, but I could be wrong. I am keeping this unit. It works within its limitations as advertised. Picture quality is ok if used with tv screen no more than 27". But if you have a wide screen projection tv I would get a progressive player for just a few dollars more. p.s. make sure you are careful loading disc into drawer as I found with the new less expensive dvd players it's easy to ruined laser tracking if accidently put in more than one disc at a time(stacking).
Rating: Summary: Excellent player, good features, unbeatable price Review: I made some research before buying my first DVD player, and I finally decided to buy this one because of the positive reviews I found on the web. I received ... a player starting with serial HE113. Pros: 1) Plays DVDs made for different regions (I had to activate some secret menu to use this). 2) Plays VCD and SVCD burned on CDRs or CDRWs. Works very well with higher kbs as well. 3) You can browse the files on a disk, and play mpg, mp3 or jpg files. When you see your jpg pictures, you have the ability to zoom in (up to 4x), see many pictures in one screen (some kind of thumbnail view), and you can even select between many transition effects (this is not documented in the manual). I heard about some other undocumented features, like the musical slideshow mode, but I didn't test this yet. Cons: 1) No way to completely turn off the unit with the remote. 2) The unit and the remote seem a little "cheap". 3) The manual does not list all the features. Overall I am very happy with the player, don't think that this is a bad player because of its price!!
Rating: Summary: Good deal Review: I live in France. I wanted a cheap DVD for my US DVDs to play in France. This machine is great. I have to use a loltage transformer from 220 to 110 but it workd great.
Rating: Summary: Worked great ... for a couple months Review: I bought this unit in July 2003 with some hesitation. I read everything I could about it because it was inexpensive but my intuition was that you get what you pay for. Unfortunately, I should have gone with my intuition. The unit stopped recognizing DVDs and won't work at all anymore. Oh well. I will say that it worked nicely for the 5 months that I did use it.
Rating: Summary: Great bang for the buck! Review: I bought it to use in my bedroom, but it quickly earned a spot in the downstairs entertainment center. Yes it looks and feels like a $30 player, but the performance is great, playing everything I've thrown at it without any visible motion artifacts or other problems. My $350 Sony refuses to play home-burned CDRs, and chokes on about half of the home-burned DVDs I've tried, but the little Norcent plays EVERYTHING with ease. Even MP3 and MPG files play flawlessly.
