Summary: Well surprised!
Review: Bought this as a replacement to an ailling (full of bugs) xv-511bk as it started to show signs of failure. So far the 600 has played everything and anything I've thrown at it. JVC has added some nice features / upgrades to the software. A quick 5 second rewind and the resume feature are great. DVDA discs sound great, but you will need to make an analog connection with RCAs to enjoy the added clarity.

Summary: Well surprised!
Review: I am very happy with this progressive-scan DVD player. The menu options are amazing and user friendly. This machine is super quiet and easy to operate. I have had nothing but success with all of the connections. A wonder video composite output along with optical fiber audio out.

Summary: Great performance and lots of features
Review: I originally wanted a Panasonic RP-82 but they have been discontinued, so I was searching for the next best DVD player. This JVC has outstanding video performance thru my progressive scan output to my HDTV. Some handy features while watching DVD's include hitting "play" to skip back 10-seconds so you can hear that line you missed, and "Strobe", which displays 9 small pictures on the screen and goes through them in slow motion. I haven't found a good use for that feature yet, actually. Zoom, picture adjustment, and simulated 3D surround sound are other features.

I haven't tried any DVD-Audio yet, or VCDs, but I have used the MP3 function. The folders on the CD are displayed on the left half of the screen and the songs on the right side. Sound quality is good, although it lacks a random play option.

Overall, great value for the price! Also comes in silver (SA-602SL)

Summary: I do not recommend purchasing this item.
Review: I purchased this item from Amazon/J.R. Music last November 2002 when it cost $100 more than now. With minimal and careful use, the unit stopped working this September. Warranty was for parts and labor to six months and parts up to a year. Trusting the JVC name and my great relationship with Amazon, I had no hesitations in purchasing this item at full price. However, less than a year and it reads "no disc" when inserting the disc. After a tedious investigation on how to have the unit replaced or repaired I found out that I would have to mail it to the nearest JVC authorized service dealer ($25 minimum postage) who will charge $70.00 just to look at the unit, with labor on top of that to repair it, then pay return shipping. So it would cost probably more than I paid for it to repair it. The service rep told me that the unit was most likely defective.... oh well....take your chances on this one. It is now collecting dust in my entertainment center. Happy Holidays to one and all.

Summary: Outstanding audio performance for the price
Review: If you can find this player at a cheap price I recommend you grab it immediately. My previous setup was a $300 NAD CD player and a $500 integrated Rotel amp before I picked up the 600BK. The JVC SA-600BK combined with a vintage Marantz 1070 integrated amp bested my NAD and Rotel setup regarding audio performance and at a third of the cost for the entire system - new/more expensive gear does not always mean better performance (regardess of how much praise it gets) and so is the reason any audio enthusiast will tell you to listen to the gear before you dive in and make a purchase. The midrange and bass I now get from my Marantz and JVC combo packs an authorative punch for rock which is what I mainly listen to. The video performance, also is very good for the price. Compared to similarily price Toshiba units, the JVC performs slighlty better with a more vivid and sharp picture. It does not lag too far behind a Pioneer Elite DV-45A either, build quality of the 600BK is very similar to the DV-45A also - lets just say it can support a 30lbs amp on top of it! One last great feature about this specific unit is the auto 10 second rewind by hitting the play button on the remote, VERY convenient.

In the end, I sold my JVC SA-600BK. I decided on a audio only setup and was so impressed by this unit's audio performance that I picked up the JVC XL-FZ700BK 7 disc CD changer which shares the same 1-bit P.E.M. D.D. digital-to-analog audio converter. Two thumbs up for JVC from this reviewer for providing consumers with high quality units at affordable prices.
