Summary: Great for long flights
Review: I originally bought this unit for long flights. Along with AIWA Noise Cancelling headphones, it's perfect! Even sitting right next to the wing, with the overhead television playing, I could hear my movie very cleary. The picture is clear, and the unit is small enough to fit into my travel bag along with a few DVD's. I would, however, recommend buying a spare battery if you want to watch more than one movie before recharging the 3 hour battery it comes with. The spare battery has a 5-7 hour charge, and the price is reasonable. This unit really isn't meant to be used without the headphones, as the speakers do not project well, but it is definitely worth purchasing. I use it all the time!! Some other handy uses I have found are: 1) Relaxing in the backyard or on the patio; 2) When you want to stay up later than the rest of the household, but not bother them with the sound of the television. You can just relax in bed with this player. And listen the manual when it recommends that you not use this with the battery if it is also plugged in. You ruin the life of the battery, which I found out the hard way!!

Summary: great portable useless for tv usage
Review: I tried this player and was impressed with the quality of the picture. the sound was ok for a player this size. what I did not like was the a/v output did not work. I.E. you cant hook it up with the cable supplied.I tried 2 machines both would not play on a standard TV. so, if you only want to watch the little screen attached to it this machine is awesome, but forget hooking it up to a motel TV or anywhere else!

Summary: A great lettle package.
Review: I was a little unsure when I order this, as to whether or not my wife would like it. (It was a gift.) But she loves it and I must admit I do also. Great picture and great sound in such a small package.

Summary: Disappointing sound makes unit unuseable ...
Review: I would agree that this is by far the best unit on the market. Superior picture quality is important and not even the newest Samsung unit beats the Toshiba. But sound quality is also important to a movie and Toshiba fails miserably here. Low volume at the highest setting makes the unit unuseable on aircraft or in other noisy enviornments. It is going back.

Summary: Let Down
Review: It could be a good unit but:

1) As others mentioned with the normal sound setting, the volume is way too low, even for headphones. And with headphones attached, there is a very loud background noise (hiss) generated by the on-board speakers.

2) I also noticed (at least in the unit I had) that the sound mix was heavy towards the left channel, i.e. the center sounds were not exactly center. I tested this with many DVDs and had the same bad result. Annoying.

3) The battery is way too bulky for a portable. All these companies should show their units with the battery pack as well before you buy them. The Panasonic models have such a smaller profile.

4) Even with all the good on-paper video specs I found the picture not as warm. Again, I think the Panasonics imho seem better.

So, I think I'll be returning mine and taking a look at the Panasonice DVD-LA95 instead.

Summary: Nice player
Review: Just got the player before a flight. I have to say this player doesn't dissapoint. It has a fantastic picture but only so so sound from the speakers (expected for its speaker size). Headphones on the otherhand sound great. It's loud enough even when sitting next to the planes engine. It has a lot of great features including progressive scan component video output if you have a TV that can handle it. Battery size is larger than I would like (my only beef) but has good run down time. Some have complained about battery discharge when the unit is off and TV connections not working. I say READ THE MANUAL! The manual clearly states that you should disconnect the battery when not in use. This is because the unit still requires a small amount of power when it is off. This is so you can use the remote to turn the unit on. As for the video connections, you have to use the monitor button to get video out. This player is definitely worth the price.

Summary: Movies at 30,000 feet
Review: My advertising agency is really booming and my wife and I are travelling out of state at least once each month. We fly everywhere we go and usually it is magazines and a book that passes our time. A friend told me about the Toshiba portable DVD player and so after some research I decided to buy it. The deciding factors for me were: one of the biggest screens in a portable and the fact that it had to external, headphone jacks. Most of the ones I read about had only one. Janie and I just flew from Dallas to Philadelphia and the flight seemed liked a blink due to the fact that we were enjoying a FREE movie. If you travel, you need to add this one to your TOY list.

Summary: The best Portable DVD on the market bar none !!!!!!!
Review: O.K.... So it finally arrived over the weekend after a colleague brought it back from the U.S., I opened the box with
great anticipation and was pleasantly surprised. I already own
the SD-P1000 but accidently dropped it and now it's inopearble.
Anyway... I powered it up and couldn't believe my eyes...
The screen is HUGE. The features on it are amazing... 8.9"
progressive scan screen, 3.5 hour battery, (option MEDB02LX is
a 5+ hour battery, twin headphone sockets (although no headphones are supplied, power-on is on the front panel as well as pause, stop, setup (or NAV as it's called), AV source button for connecting a camcorder for instance, etc. etc. The first thing I noticed is that it doesn't get hot like the SD-P1000. The battery
is a flat plinth that sits underneath the player itself. There is the ability to create your own screen saver by pausing a shot and saving into memory as a screen saver (very useful) the set-up screen is completely different to the SD-P1000 due to the NAV set-up. A credit card sized remote makes it great to use and move around. The picure is excellent and their are 4 facilities for creating your own picture set-up, including contrast, brightness,
tint, colour, sharpness etc. The sound is fantastic as you have 3 sound modes, normal, 3DN-2-2, and dialogue which sounds very loud. You'll all be impressed by the size and build quality of
this player, a real gem !!!. By the way... You can but this on the web at around..., a absolute bargain.

Summary: Ditto, this is the one to have.
Review: Prior to our purchase of the SD-P2000 I did quite a bit of study on the other units available and decided on the Toshiba for various techno-features, top of the list being the quality of the screen. I could carry on with techno-babble but we'll leave that for others.

Semi-short and to the point, most reviewers see this as being a superior product, I agree. Some express concern about the quality of sound output and that's the main reason for my authoring this additional review.

If one reads the manual bundled with the player it's easy to glance over the sound output options but they're important features to note. There are three different basic sound settings, one standard and two enhanced. For those having trouble hearing, 1) use headphones (the only logical way to limit background noise and 2) use the "Dialog" mode for sound output, you will find this makes all the difference in clarity and output volume in most cases. A few other reviewers have mentioned noise cancelling headphones. I'f you're spending this kind of money on a portable player the additional dollars may put you over the top. If you're willing to go all out, look into the Bose offering, a bit on the spendy side but wow do they work well.

This is a wonderful unit, look no further.
