Summary: A starter unit for DVD and something you need to know.
Review: My kids and nephews have built an extensive DVD library so I figured it was time to get a DVD player. I'm not going to do anything fancy so I just wanted something inexpensive and straight forward. That's what this unit is ... BUT!

You should know about something that I didn't know about. The television I wanted to use it on has a built-in VHS cassette VCR. The only way for me to plug into this system is to go through this VCR. That causes problems with some copy protection scheme. Apparently this scheme is on all recently built systems. I don't know all the ins and outs of this problem. I do know that the most straightward solution is to only use this DVD player on systems where you can plug directly into the TV or Monitor, no intermediate devices.

After being right on the verge of returning the player, I decided to scout around on the 'net and that is how I found out the real issue. So, in conclusion it works fine. It's a little clumsy or maybe I am.

Oh! and it isn't really made by Hyundai. It is imported by Hyundai; made by E&S Electronics; and made in China. It is a region 1 DVD player in my case.

If I can figure a way around plugging into the VCR, I'll be happy with the unit for my original intent.

Summary: Piece of Junk
Review: Subtitles dont go away. In the middle of the movie the screen shoots to video 1. Slow loading ...........overall this is a piece of [bull]!! Buy a Sony you get what you pay for.

Summary: happy with my purchase
Review: Thank God for the internet. I bought this unit a couple of months ago and have had the same subtitling problem that other owners have had. Will now go and try their solutions.
This is a nice little unit for the money that loads quickly, delivers a good picture, is pretty easy to set up, and is great-looking. The remote could definitely have been better. (Why is it that the main interface area of most consumer electronics seems to get so little design attention?)

Summary: Screen brightness comes and goes - HELP
Review: The brightness on the screen comes and goes. I have been told this is a safety feature to stop my copying DVDs? I am using the composite video out into my TV which has a built in video. Any suggestions?

Summary: Pretty good
Review: The instructions are basically non-existent or don't work the way they say. The connection diagrams are VERY misleading!!! If you stop the player and leave for more than 5 minutes, the player shuts off and when you start again, you have to start at the very beginning of the movie. The "bookmark" feature doesn't work. If they would let you "disable" the "Auto-Power Off" feature, it would be great! The picture playback is GREAT, however!

Summary: missing something
Review: the picture looks great, now if it had only come with audio cables I would have been able to judge the sound. As it is, I will tell you tomorrow after having made a special trip to the electronics store to get one...

Summary: Really Impressed
Review: The price may make you think this has got to be a total piece of junk, but it is far from it. It was incredibly easy to set up (I never had connected a DVD player before), but throw away the manual. It won't help; just use good ol' common sense. Others complained of the subtitle problem. Follow the advice of one reviewer here and choose a language other than English from the sub-title menu and they will disappear for good. I converted it to a machine capable of playing DVDs from around the world in approximately 30 secs. Picture and sound quality are exceptionally good. Loading/Unloading is quick & easy. My only complaint is a rather lame one. If you pause the player for too long (like to make a sandwich or walk the dog) the movie will re-set and you'll have to skip through to find your spot. No biggie. Switch to decaf and you'll be fine. The skipping goes pretty quickly. The machine looks good, too -- not like some of the cheapies you see at traditional discount stores. If you want more than a standard installation, you'll have to supply the additional cables yourself. Bottom Line: You could pay more for a "big-name's" solid, entry-level multi-format media player, but why anyone would is a mystery to me.

Summary: DEAR `VERY DISAPPOINTED'
Review: There is nothing wrong with your Hyundai HDP-550s. I had the same problem when I first got mine(no picture via s-video). I soon discovered that this was because the player was originally configured at the factory for composite video and TV left/right audio. So, here's what you do: connect the dvd player into the back of your TV's composite video & left/right jacks. You should now be able to confirm a picture (DVD Player's initial screen). Next, access the player's menu, configure it for s-video and
whatever audio system you are using. Finally, re-hook to your video audio system, and you're all set! I know, this isn't exactly the simple plug-n-play we are all accustomed to with higher end name brand players like my Toshiba, and the manual isn't going to win any literary awards in the near future. However, if you can get by this minor inconvience then you will find that the 550's benefits will easily outweigh its faults.
