Rating: Summary: A Pleasant Surprise! Review: After entering the world of DVD on a somewhat sour note (I purchased a GE/Thomson brand player first), I was a bit skeptical as to the performance of affordable players. But, this player pleasantly surprised me. I tried it out on all my discs and it has yet to skip! It also has advanced features like zoom, and is DTS compatible. For those of you who are lucky enough to have TV's with component jacks, this has them too in addition to its analog jacks, and S-video output. Do yourself a favor, if you want to buy a DVD player and don't have surround sound capabilities, save yourself the cash and buy this unit. Trust me, Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, and Toshiba don't really have anything else much better(unless you want a Dolby digital decoder) to offer.
Rating: Summary: Skipping?...I don't think so. Review: After purchasing, I read the reviews and was quite apprehensive. I thought skipping would be a huge problem with this DVD player. Not so. I have watched 1 or 2 DVD's each week on it for the past 2 months and have only seen it skip twice. It was a minor inconvenience but it occured in the blink of an eye. Believe me, I hardly noticed it. I think it's a great DVD player and have had no other problems. I don't think skipping is caused by a problem with the DVD brand or type or the way it was made but maybe due to how it was handled during shipping. UPS isn't exactly always careful with how they handle packages. I have a broken dish as proof.

Rating: Summary: Good purchase decision Review: After reading reviews and buying tips on Amazon, and reading Consumer Reports, I decided to buy the Samsung 611. I haven't played a ton of movies, but have tried Gladiator and The Matrix. There was only one very slight skip on the Gladiator in a very unimportant sequence. Other than that it has played flawless. I'm not sure why the quality seems to be so hit and miss on the 611 and 711, but my unit is great. I love it. It is quite full featured, has all the options and more that a typical movie watcher would want, and it's a fantastic price. Everyone needs a DVD player!! This one is a good choice.
Rating: Summary: I really think this is a great little player! Review: As a survivor of the Beta/VHS war, I waited as long as I could to take the dive into DVD. I really didn't have a lot of extra scratch and I am still jealous of my 1,000+ VHS titles, mostly studio editions. I figured that I had thirty days to let this baby prove itself and it did. The picture and sound are phenomenal on my 27" SONY with SONY Pro-Logic Surround Processor. Skipping has been almost non-existent, even after heavy use (yes, there have been one or two very slight 'freezes' on most discs but the sound stays on track so it's not a major inconvenience). Try this machine...I think you'll love it!

Rating: Summary: Not too bad for the price Review: FOr the price this thing is not too bad, as it did not give me any problems with some movies that notoriously do (matrix, wild wild west). It all depends on your budget. If you are a college student like me you cant afford to drop 500 beans on a really nice dvd player. However, this one will tide you over just fine till you start making some big bucks in the real world. Overall: 6.5 out of 10
Rating: Summary: Great picture and sound compromised by occasional skipping Review: For those who don't want to spend too much, the 611 is a solid player. The only problem that I have is the occasional video skip. It has skipped maybe two or three times, but they only last about 1/2 a second. The picture and sound quality is great, even without surround sound. I usually experience one video glitch per dvd, start to finish. Other than that, the video is crystal clear. Using the optical output, the audio quality I get when playing cd's comes very close in comparison to my high end system in the living room. For the price I can't complain about a little glitch once in a while. Hope this helps
Rating: Summary: Poor performance and almost no support from Samsung Review: I actually have the Samsung DVD709, and I thought that the skipping problem that player has would be worked out for this newer model, but judging by the reviews here I guess not! Also, their website does not address these issues, and only after speaking to a friend did I find out there was an upgrade for my player -- but after I got the upgrade, I discovered it wasn't the latest version, and both tech support and the service center gave me the runaround. SAMSUNG TECH SUPPORT STILL HAS NOT RESPONDED TO MY LATEST E-MAIL ASKING FOR HELP. I only bought a Samsung DVD player because I was very happy with an old Samsung TV I own. I also own a Toshiba SD1200 DVD Player, which has no problems at all. If you're looking for a DVD player, DO NOT BUY SAMSUNG. Please, don't put yourself through all the frustration I did. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions.
Rating: Summary: Sophisticated features at a rational price Review: I am very pleased with my Samsung DVD-611. I have previously owned the Samsung DVD-709 which performed admirably. I own CDV's from Asia. The Samsung products output the PAL encoded signal from these disks with a good quality NTSC signal. I had tried playing these disks on the Philips DVD players, but Philips DVD players always output a PAL signal when the input source is PAL which, will does not sync correctly or produce correct colors on the American NTSC televisions. The Samsung DVD-611 is future proofed with DTS outputs. The component outputs include coaxial and optical. The remote is sophisticated yet simple to operate. The mechanism on the Samsung DVD-611 operates quietly. The Samsung DVD-611 includes sophisticated features like 2X and 4X video zoom and multiple levels of fast and slow motion. There is no need to pay more for a high quality DVD player.
