Summary: An excellent entry level DVD player
Review: I've had this unit for several months and have had no problems (can't say the same about the expensive Sony unit I had to return after only 2 months of use). Great for those who want to make the leap into DVD and don't want to pay extra for features that will go unused. The remote could be better designed, but at this price, who cares.

Summary: Bringing DVD to the masses.
Review: Not knowing a great deal about DVD players, I chose the Philips DVD825AT based on Nick Santilli's review on Amazon.com. Upon receiving the unit, I plugged it in to my A/V receiver and was running in less than ten minutes. Use of this DVD player is intuitive. I did have to get out the book to figure out how to turn subtitles off after accidentally turning them on, but that was the only issue that required reading. For those that are still asking whether or not a DVD player is worth it, at this price you can't go wrong. Still pause is absolutely flawless. Even on this inexpensive unit you can advance one frame at a time if desired. In addition to the regular movie, most DVDs include trailers and other special features not found on the VHS release. At this price and with this performance, I feel that DVD will hit mainstream this holiday season.

Summary: Philips DVD825AT
Review: Once I was an 'audiophile', you know, the Garrard record player, or the Empire which would play upside down. Now? Not so. What I appreciate is quality, and the Philips DVD825 has it. Plain, basic and simple. Hooking it up was easy, no reading directions that were mind boggling. It does what it is supposed to, play a DVD, and give options. It's like this amplifier is .02% distortion, this amplifier is .000002 distortion. Can you hear it? Hardly.... It's all for bragging rights.. If you want a good DVD player, one that works out-of-the-box, the Philips is for you. It's design is sleek and eye appealing. The only 'quirk' I have with it is the remote which is meant for people with tiny fingers, and the lack of a good S cable. But, for the price, an excellent buy.

Summary: You get more than you paid for!
Review: The Philips/Magnavox DVD player is a great bargain because it gives you the features of a high end player for a low price. I first thought of getting a Sony DVD player but I researched and found out that there have been many problems with Sony/Panasonic/Toshiba DVD players concerning certain discs. But this DVD player hasn't given me any problems, it has more features than the other major brands and its price is lower. Also it has dual lasers which can play any CD/DVD out there, compared to the other major brands which only have one laser. So if you want to get more for your money, get this DVD player.

Summary: The remote stinks
Review: The remote for this DVD player just stinks. The order of the important buttons is:

[rewind] [fast-forward] [play]

[pause] [unimportant] [stop]

In the dark its impossible to remember which is which, and you'll end up stopping, rewinding, or something else disruptive. The remote spoils the whole product, imo.

Summary: Great DVD Player -- "skipping" not a problem
Review: This DVD Player is THE ABSOLUTE BEST in the price range offering tons of special efffect features. Many reports of "skipping" on this DVD player are true, but they have to do with the disc, not the player. Some DVD discs are recorded in a "duel-layer" format, causing a slight skip, once, at the same place on the disc every time. If the disc is recorded in this format it will say so in the fine print on the back of the cover. This "skipping" should also be prominant on other DVD players as well.

Summary: Great Starter DVD
Review: This DVD player is the perfect way to jump in to the DVD market with the minimum investment. It has everything you need, including excellent freeze frame, easy set-up and intuitive controls, without all the bells and whistles you don't. If you are thinking about buying your first player, this is a great machine for the price. Time will tell whether it's reliable mechanically, but I've had success with other Philips products, so I'm optimistic about this one.
