Summary: Very Nice DVD for First Time Buyers
Review: After reviewing several different brands of DVD's from JVC's to Panasonic's and reading all their reviews that the owners and editors had written about them, I decided to purchase this one and wasn't disappointed a bit. As the others say here, very easy to setup and excellent viewing capabilities. Everything comes with it that you'll need. If you desire a better connection as I did with cables, I recommend the "S-Cable" and the "Monster Cable". The only glitch with the entire DVD if you want to call it that, was that the remote doesn't control any other devices, just the DVD. But for the quality, price, and no headaches I recommend this little jewel.

Summary: Very pleased with this player
Review: Just got the SD-1600 for Christmas, and I'm very happy with it. The setup wasn't too difficult (took me a second to split apart the enclosed RCA cables, so that I could plug the DVD video out into my TV, and the audio outs into my stereo), it's extremely easy to use, and the picture/sound quality are outstanding, even though I'm using the analog outputs.

I had been researching DVDs for several months, and at first I was leaning towards Samsung, but the reviews on Amazon were not terribly favorable, but nearly everyone was happy with the Toshiba, so I selected that one, and I've been impressed with it. These reviews are EXTREMELY helpful to me for stuff like this!

If you want a starter DVD (and if you've got a normal TV and stereo like me, why not go with a starter?) the Toshiba SD-1600 is your way to go.

Summary: Great First Player
Review: This is a great first DVD player. It took me about 5 minutes to setup and I was watching Gladiator. Terrific picture and sound. Other reviews complained about the remote, but I think it is just fine. It did momentarily pause though on Gladiator in one spot, maybe 1/2 second. Nothing big though and was flawless through Braveheart. Toshiba is very quickly becoming my favorite brand, especially for the price!

Summary: Read this before buying a Toshiba SD-1600 DVD player.
Review: I bought the Toshiba SD-1600 DVD player for Christmas. We rented the Art of War (a new release with Wesley Snipes) and the disc could not be read by the machine. I called Toshiba and they told me that I would have to send my machine in for an upgrade because for some reason this model can not read this movie. This is just something I think you all should know as consumers, because who knows if it will have problems with other movies as well.

Summary: the easiest to use movie player i've ever used
Review: i'm 14 and i had this baby up and running in 3 mins. and 30 secs. after that i was watching my movie the only down side to it is that when you stop the movie you can't save your place and fast-forwarding and re-winding is slow as hell.

Summary: My first DVD player
Review: It was just as advertised. The SD-1600 is a sweetheart. It is a "GREAT" first unit. Set up took only minutes. If it took me only a couple of minutes, it will take you only a couple of minutes. Everything worked on the all of DVD's played over the last two week. I did buy new cables as suggested on various other reviews. I hooked dvd player up with PC speaker and subwoofer system for great sound. The features are there, the cost is right. I recommend the Toshiba SD-1600 DVD-Video player as a unbeatable first buy.

Summary: Be careful.
Review: This DVD player doesn't play VCDs. SD 1200 does play VCDs. I am wondering why Toshiba doesn't make the SD 1600 to play VCDs. I'll have to return it.

Summary: A great product
Review: We recieved this DVD player for Christmas and it is great!! This is our first DVD, and we really didn't want or need a high end product. The sound and picture quality is awesome, and the set up is quick. The directions are also very easy to follow and the remote is a cinch to use once you read through the manual. I am very pleased with this product and look forward to viewing a lot more DVDs.

Summary: Excellent beginner DVD player.
Review: If you have never watched a movie on DVD, you are missing something. Not only do you get a great screen image (Depends on TV your showing it on) you also get great sound quality. For those who enjoy the movie experience you can watch the movie in widescreen format.

This DVD player is a great entry level DVD player. It has all the stardard DVD features; Widescreen, fast forward/rewind, slow forward, play loop, Dolby Stero, 3D sound, S Video output, Digital Stero Output and regular Analog Stero Output, and supports all the stuff you find DVD's (Subtitles, Extras and such). The great thing about this DVD player are two fold; simple to use and it can keep up with the action. As strange as it sounds, some DVD players can not decode the information off a DVD fast enough when the action is fast on the screen. The result is skipping and jumping. Well, with this player that does not occur. All action, all the time is smooth.

Another bonus is that it is simple to use and setup. Within 15 mintues (This is with my parents monster stero setup) I had this thing up and running. The controls are striaght forward and require a few new ideas to learn (There are functions in DVD movies that you can set). If you are one who likes movies but not eletronics, then the SD-1600 is what you want.

I bought two, one for my parents, and one for my brother and his wife. I know my parents were really happy and impressed with DVD's, and I know my brother will be when he gets his.

Summary: Best DVD player on the market!!
Review: Fantastic player all around. I've never had any problems with it at all. Great picture quality. Menu and loading is very quick. I don't know who these people are that complain about it not reading CD-R's. You don't buy a DVD player to play CD's. You buy it to play DVD's. If you want to play CD's, you really should get a CD player as it has much better CD functions and sound. There are a lot of good things to say about this player, but it would be easier to only mention the few things I don't like about it:

1) Typical of starter DVD systems, it has no inputs, so it can't pass through other video components. When paired with a DirecTV system, it would be much easier if it would just pass through instead of having to manually switch between different inputs on the TV.

2) You cannot switch it to mono. Why would I want, you ask? Because we have FOUR mono VCR's in our house, not one with stereo. So if you're to run it through any of them, you lose either the left or right side. This forces me to now use THREE manually-selectable TV inputs (refer to #1).

3) No multi-function remote. It's become commonplace for devices to come standard with multi-function remotes. I wish this player did.

4) If you stop in the middle of a DVD and leave it for too long, when you play it, it starts over from the beginning. It would be nice if it would remember the location where you last stopped.

These are very minor issues, and I still give it 5 out of 5!
