Rating: Summary: Has Everything You Need Review: The Toshiba SD-1600 DVD Player has every feature you need for a 4 by 3 or 16 by 9 Television. It has a Composite video output, an S output and a Component (Red, Green, Blue) output. For audio it has a Digital coaxial output for an RCA connector to a Dolby Digital and/or DTS 5.1 Receiver as well as Analog left and right outputs for Pro-Logic or Stereo play. The picture delivers 540 lines of horizontal resolution. It offers both DVD and CD text and also includes a Zoom feature. An excellent player for the money!
Rating: Summary: GREAT Entry level DVD player! Review: I AM IMPRESSED! I finally decided to take the DVD plunge, so I looked online and decided on the Toshiba 1600 based on the glowing reviews it had received. Trust me, the reviews are accurate! This player is rock-solid, has all the features an entry level DVD enthusiast could hope for, and plays every movie you put in. After talking to some friends who had players that wouldn't play certain movies (The Matrix, The X-Men, Tarzan), I was relieved that mine plays every disc I've tried. One side note: When I originally purchased this player, it was defective (due to shipping damage). But Amazon.com took great care of me, shipped me a new one, and even checked it before they sent it to me. So, five stars for the player, and 5 stars for Amazon.com's customer service!
Rating: Summary: PERFECT Review: I don't know much about DVD players. But, I bought this one (because of the price and all the people who liked it). We have had the player now for a couple of months and have had not one problem. There is no skipping or pausing during movies (which I guess happens on other players). I would recommend this player for anyone interested in getting one and not spending an arm and a leg but having something that works really really well.
Rating: Summary: The best present I EVER got Review: My girlfriend gave me this DVD player for Christmas, and I couldn't be happier! Wonderful picture, super easy to set up and get running, durable and it looks great. I really don't have any problems with this player.
Rating: Summary: Great quality at an unbeatable price! Review: I purchased this item for my husband for Christmas - I was originally attracted to the price (I can't pass up a bargain) but the reviews are what actually sold me on this product. Well, it went over big with my husband as well as the rest of the men in the family. The quality, features and ease of set up and operation were better than expected. We are very pleased with the quality and performance of this product - so much so that since then I purchased two more... one for my son-in-law and another for my son. It's truly a great bargain. P.S. Don't forget the monster cable for superior quality in sound and video.
Rating: Summary: I'm Extremely Happy!! Review: This is a very nice buy for first time buyers. I didn't have any problems with hooking it up. The picture quality and sound is quite good even when using your regular a/v cables. Also in one of the earlier reviews someone mentioned that they rented The Art of War and that the player wouldn't read the disc. Well I purchased that movie over the weekend and I didn't have any problems watching it. I would strongly recommend this player to any first time buyers!!
Rating: Summary: Best bang for the buck Review: After doing alot of research I have found (for the $200 range) this is by far the best player you can buy. It seems every player below this one is inferior and anything above it just has expensive & useless features. The controller is well setup (unlike their previous SD1200 model) and it has 3 levels of zoom, which is very usefull if you feel the movie looks too "widescreen" you can zoom in once, or zoom in twice to get the "tv" look. You can change things like language and closed caption on the fly and not have to stop the movie. I can't think of a single feature this player is lacking, except audio optical output which is really for high end audiophiles. The player has both RCA output and Component output, which is important for you expensive TV (aka HDTV) buyers to get the best possible image. I have purchased this, and like it so much, I convinced 3 friends to also purchase this player, all of them love it. One friend's younger brother purchased another DVD player, I believe that GPX player that boasts MP3 playback & such for $130 and he's sorry he got it and wished he had just boughten this player. On a side note for you advanced users, this player does not play VCD, SVCD of MP3 disks. If you don't know what those are, don't worry then, you'll never use those features.
Rating: Summary: an excellent value Review: By my thinking, there are two prime contenders for the value DVD market, the Toshiba SD-1600 and the Pioneer DV-333. Both are good players and there are tradeoffs with either one. With either unit, you'll get great picture quality and great audio (of course if you have a 5.1 or DTS receiver, your DVD player doesn't affect the audio quality, as your receiver does the decoding). Both also offer component video output and coaxial digital audio, useful if you have more expensive home theater setup. Of the two, the Pioneer offers the ability to play recordable CD's and CD-RW's by including a second laser. Most DVD players, including the Toshiba, are either unable to play CD-R(W)'s or play only certain brands, because of the laser frequency differences between the DVD and CD formats. I don't own a burner so this wasn't an important distinction for me. In order to meet the $200 price point, Pioneer includes little else in the way of special features. The DV-333's case comes across as "cheaply" made, but the unit is covered by a comprehensive 1 yr. parts/labor warranty, which is unusual for this price - the SD-1600 has 1 yr. parts / 90 days labor, which seems to be the norm. While the Toshiba offers a few "gimicky" features, such as the ability to magnify the image to remove letterbox bars (a feature that I found degraded the image unacceptably), it does include the incredible "video black level expansion" feature. What this does is make the "black" reference point of the video signal "true" black rather than the sort of dark-gray black you're used to. I find this to be an amazing improvement - check out Apollo 13 in normal and then black enhanced mode. Since I wasn't able to find any real reason (at the time) to choose the DV-333 over the SD-1600 or vice-versa, I decided to buy one and see how I liked it. Well, the black level expansion decided it - it's worth buying the SD-1600 just to have it. Don't confuse this with "image adjustments" found on other players (the DV-333 for instance). I have heard that the black level expansion circuitry on high-end Sony's is better, but have never actually seen it. If it's better than this, that's saying something. So, why the four stars instead of five? A few things. First, the unit is a bit noisy, certainly not noticeable from "couch distance" but audible if you're lying on the floor near it listening to a CD. Second, layer changes are noticeable, particularly if they occur in the middle of a scene. Conversely, on well-mastered disks which put layer transitions between scenes, they're invisible. These problems certainly aren't enough to counter the positive aspects of the player, but suggest areas that Toshiba could address in future revisions. In short, an excellent value, with the particularly notable black level expansion feature which in and of itself makes this a good investment.
Rating: Summary: Awesome player! (Too bad the remote didn't work) Review: I got this player and hooked it up in no time. I was so excited, being my first DVD player and all. I was sitting very close to it just to get it started and played the movie with no problems. I even played with all of the whiz-bang remote features. It was great. Everything everyone said about this was true! Great picture, great sound! Wonderful! Then came day 2. I was over the excitement enough to sit back away from the player and started watching another movie. Just to play, I hit pause... then hit it again, and again, and again. Finally I did the remote dance and got it to pause..ONCE. Getting it to play again was another story. It still sort of works from about 2 feet in the dark but... Being an electronics technician, I figured the batteries they shipped were weak so I replaced them. Nope. I prayed it was something simple with the remote but took that to a friend's house with the exact same player and it worked pefectly from across the room. I suspected the optical sensor went bad in my 2 day old player. Warranty confirmed that this happens and I get to send it back. I was offered a free repair from Toshiba, but was informed it would take 4 weeks at that center. NO WAY! Thank God for return policies:-) Still, I guess there are duds in everything and I nailed one. Why 4 stars then? Because getting to see and hear the quality this unit produces for this price, I can't just simply return this one and hate it. I want this baby replaced and am hoping the next one works as advertised because it really seems like a great player for the cost. If it goes bad though, look out for the next review, Toshiba! By the way, has anyone else had this type of problem?
Rating: Summary: Affordable quality Review: This is Toshiba's entry level DVD player. Excellent picture. Excellent sound. Excellent price. But if you're looking for bells and whistles, and price/performance is not your first requirement, you might consider a whole slew of othere players at this price range.
