Rating: Summary: This first-time DVD buyer couldn't be happier! Review: Of all the basic, entry-level DVD players I looked at, this model received the best reviews and had the best features. Unlike other similar models, it does not play video CD's or have optical audio-digital output, but these did not matter as much to me as the high horizontal image resolution. This is the how many lines the DVD player can process, and the higher the more clear the picture. I'm very happy with the picture quality even on my standard 27". The interface on the player is really simple (stop, play, and back/forth is about it!) and while the remote has many more features on it, that really isn't too hard to learn either. I've been very happy with this DVD player and if it's an entry-level player you are looking for, I would give serious consideration to this model.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Texan Review: I read the reviews and bought this Toshiba SD-1600 DVD player rather than Sony. I am disappointed and would return it if I still could. I can hear the motor during silent parts of the movies, and the zoom is not very advanced compared to newer models from other manufacturers. Also, this player doesn't seem to handle transitions of layers very well. There is always a very noticeable pause. I also had problems watching 'For Love of the Game' (no scratches) as the player just stalled on one scene toward the end and would not advance no matter what I did. I ended up having to restart the movie, and watch it from the next scene onward. I haven't tried 'The Matrix' yet, but understand that it gives DVD players a good workout. Thinking about the Toshiba SD-1600? Think again and buy the Sony or another maker.
Rating: Summary: Great Player - Great Price Review: We almost bought the Sony S360, but this one was cheaper and had zoom. Sony does not! Bought it 2 months ago and have watched over 25 DVD's so far. We had a couple of problems that were attributed to Blockbuster rentals. Never had any problems with new DVD's. Started out using regular RCA plug for video and was severely disappointed. When I switched to S-Video, WOW!!! The picture is amazing! The sound is great, also! We love the zoom, ff, rew, pause features too! Everything works great. We absolutely love it! I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: Simple and Performs Great Review: This player has been working perfectly for me ever since I bought it. It is easy to set-up and does exactly what it says. I recommend this to people who aren't looking for all the bells and whistles in their DVD player. It also has a very acceptable price.
Rating: Summary: So easy to use, even my dad can use it! Review: The Toshiba SD-1600 breathed some new life into my 12-year-old 27-inch Mitsubishi TV! I connected the player directly to the TV with a Radio Shack S-Video cable and a pair of gold-plated analog audio cables left over from the days of the now old and busted VCR. I was able to get this baby up and running within ten minutes. The video and audio quality is just plain superb! The 540 horizontal lines of resolution is far more than most other players have, and makes for really sharp and detailed pictures; my mom can now make out the wrinkles on Sting's face as he sings a tune on one of his live concert DVD's, and my dad and I can pause to a single frame and stare at the ladies while viewing "Bring It On" (just kidding). The sound is just as great; even though it's hooked up to a stereo system that's even older than the TV, everything still sounds really good. (A tip: If you have a plain 2-channel stereo system or TV, use the Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack if the DVD provides it. 5.1 soundtracks will work fine, but they have 2.0 soundtracks there because they're optimized for that type of audio setup.) I've played a wide variety of DVD's with absolutely no problems. This includes action flicks such as "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (Ultimate Edition) and "Gladiator", slower-paced comedies like "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo" and "Meet the Parents", and an animated film, "Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea". No, I have not tried "The Matrix" on it; I've already seen it far too many times. Other features such as the Spatializer 3D audio system and picture zoom work quite well and to my expectations. Discs don't load as quickly as other models, but that shouldn't be a concern unless it takes absolutely *forever* to do it. This player does a great job in handling layer switches and I love the black level enhancement, which brings the darkest black on your display lower than the standard, making a big difference on the overall visual experience. So take my word for it, you'll be happy with everything this Toshiba player has to offer. Get one, have fun with it, and enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Toshiba SD-1600 DVD video player Review: Someone said that it didn't keep the last spot viewed for more than 20 minutes in a review I read. It was my experience that after stopping the DVD & coming back 3 hours later all I had to do was hit play & it started from the last place viewed. The key is to only hit stop once. If you hit stop twice then it'll reset to the beginning. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because this was my first DVD player. It definately was easy to hook up & they supply all you need to hook up. I preferred the smaller remote that fits snugly in your hand. I am recommending this item to friends & would buy their products.
Rating: Summary: Toshiba SD1600 DVD Player Review: The SD1600U is very easy to operate, has alot of good features, I looked at alot of players before choosing this unit. Owners Manual is very well written. A really exelent feature is the Zoom button on the remote, will zoom in 3 times to enlarge picture size, cuts sides and top, bottom off but is a good feature. Has the multiple camera angle of 1,2,3. Plays CD`s but will not play any CDR disks or VCD`s. I really enjoy this unit, give it an A++++++ rating.
Rating: Summary: Toshiba SD-1600 DVD Video Player Review: After reading reviews by customers, I purchased this product in September 2000. Shortly after I had it, it would play intermittently. I thought that the problems were the rentals from Blockbuster and I would take them back and get other ones which seem to work. One day in January 2001, it wouldn't play at all. It would still play CDs, but not the DVDs. After frustrating efforts of exchanging DVDs at Blockbuster's, I finally took it in to a authorized Toshiba service repair. They looked at the unit and said that it needed a new head! I had played less than 10 DVDs through it. Since it was passed the 90 warranty period, I had to pay for service, but the part would be free from Toshiba. Approximately 4 weeks later, I got the unit back and played a DVD; it worked fine. I was very disappointed that the unit would so quickly require repair. I think it is a good quality, but buyers should look closely at the warranty period and if there is a hint of a problem they should immediately take it to an authorized Toshiba service station.
Rating: Summary: Nice player, nice opts, good price Review: I'm not a major electronics buff but this is a nice easy to use unit. The only thing it can't do is play VCD's. That might be an issue for some people.
Rating: Summary: Great Player Review: This is a great DVD player. I bought the 1600 as a christmas present for my parents and it has had no problems. the picture quality is impressive and the zoom is definitely a needed extra when considering a DVD player. This DVD is a steal for the money. For those new to DVDs or looking to switch I would recommend the Toshiba 1600. get some monster cables though for picture and sound. They are cheap and help a lot.
