Rating: Summary: Things to keep in mind. Review: The unit works great, but there are three things to keep in mind:Doesn't play CDRs Doesn't have an optical out Made in china
Rating: Summary: Nice starter but missing a few things Review: This unit does not play VCD's and for some reason it's kind of slow loading up certain DVD's. Well, I guess you get what you pay for. Not a bad beginner system, but after a few months, you're going to wish you spent just a bit more to get more.
Rating: Summary: My Problem with SD 1200 Review: I normally like Toshiba products, I have two of their notebooks. But I have to warn you that my SD 1200 DVD player simply stopped working at after only about 15 dvd's played and only 7 months. . right after warranty. It's got an incredibly short warranty, and they charged me over $110 dollars to fix a hardly used unit. This may be one of those "rare" instances in which you might consider an "extended service plan." I don't know how well this unit will hold up. . .but I'm looking for another unit for my daughter and I'm "concerned" Other than the "sudden death" and occasional "jumps and freezes" it's a great unit. Especially the super zoom feature.
Rating: Summary: Dissapointed Review: Features are sub-standard, many of the good reviews are obviously first time DVD owners that don't realize the full potential of other comparable DVD players. This player also doesn't play "home-made" VCDs on CD-R's. With the capabilities available today to make VCDs of home video or photo-cd type disks, this is an important feature that was left out. I would suggest looking at alternate players if you want to make your own CD-Rs to play.
Rating: Summary: Lives up to the hype Review: And here I was thinking that all these rave reviews were written by undercover Toshiba employees! ;-) I bought this model based on reviews here and elsewhere, and on the list of features (ColorStream in particular). I feel that it is indeed a high quality machine at a bargain price. The ability to endlessly replay an arbitrary, user-selected segment of a DVD should prove useful to parents of small children.
Rating: Summary: Great DVD-Video Player! Buy it!!! Review: Can't beat it for the price! I bought it for a Valentine's Day gift and waited, until May to rate it. We have had NO PROBLEMS! Very easy set-up. Plays all Video DVDs we have tried. Great sound! Great picture. You will love it!
Rating: Summary: Definitely NOT an Energizer Product Review: You'd be better off buying from a company that stands behind their products. 8 months ago I bought an SD-1200 (earlier version of the SD-1600)and it just stopped working in the middle of a movie. Toshiba gave me two options- send them [money] and pay to ship and insure it the unusable player for some kind of replacement (unclear on model, new or refurbished) OR take my chances with a repair shop that said it would cost ... and take 4 weeks just to diagnose the problem. At the original price..., Toshiba could do more. My advice? Stay away from any Toshiba product. Maybe you won't have any problems with your player, but if you do, don't count on any help from Toshiba.
Rating: Summary: bargin for the features, but missing.... Review: All in all the DVD player is a great value ($) having everything you might need except optical a output port (-1/2 star). But the RCA jack with the bitstream information does appear to suffice and to be honest I cannot hear the difference between it and the optical on my older DVD player. The 1600 setup and running of this unit is very straight forward and easy, but I have to admit the remote control did require me to read the instruction book just a little (-1/2 star). The buttons are smaller than the older remote and a little harder to read in low light levels (no back lighting). Reason I brought one: The DVD disc loading is fast compared to the SD 3107 player and this unit plays DVD problem discs that my 3107 could not, which was a reason I replaced it with this 1600 model. The image and sound quality is equal to my old Toshiba 3107 which cost me $ a few years ago which at the time I thought was a steal, hence the high value of the 1600 now. Unit setup: I recommend using the componenet video output if at all possible and setting the black to "enchanced", keep the 3-D sound and screen saver options off. Unit extras: The zoom feature is nice because not only can you zoom in on more than one levels you can move around using the up down and left right buttons. Summary: If you are looking for the most bang for your buck this unit might fit the bill, especially if you are looking for something under $. In my opinion why spend the money if you are not going to see or hear the difference? Take the savings and rent or buy more DVD movies, which is the purpose of buying a DVD player in the first place. Best of luck to you.
Rating: Summary: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU TOSHIBA !! Review: First DVD player for me, but as always, before purchasing I have ready many reviews all over the web before purchasing....Read all the good reviews here, then multiply by ten, this is a top notch player for the money. Don't like letterbox? Hit the zoom button once or twice to make the picture fill your screen!! This player also has a pretty cool feature called a/b repeat, in which you hit the button once where you want to mark the beginning spot, then again where you want to mark the ending spot, and the player will repeat this scene that YOU marked in a continuing loop....Can you say American Pie LOL. The best features that I can think of off the top of my head, are: the zoom feature, repeat feature, and the black level enhancement feature. The latter is an UNBELIEVABLE feature. As your watching a movie, and you turn the black level enhancement on, it really improves the picture, by giving you blacker than black images, instead of that little bit of white haze over black objects on screen like with some players. Some people complain about how slow the disc draw opens up....Give me a break people 1.5 seconds it too long to wait to put a disc in?? If time is that precious to you, I cant see you sitting down for 2 hours to watch a DVD, if you cant wait 1.5 seconds to get the disc in. Another complaint that I hear is that you can hear the motor running while watching movies. I have mine behind glass, so I cant really be much help there, but I don't hear a thing. Yet again, if your listening to the TV that low whats the sence of watching the movie LOL. Anyway, I am very picky, and I love this player. I DID notice that with dual layer discs, the player sometimes pauses for a half second while transversing to the second part, but being a first time DVD player owner I am not sure if this is common in all players, nonetheless it isnt a major annoyance. Thanks Toshiba!!
