Summary: Continues to perform perfectly.
Review: This was to be a 2nd DVD, the one for the bedroom. It soon became apparent it outperformed the one in the media room. In the 7 months it has been in service, it has been flawless. It has all the quality you expect from DVD, plus better than average ability to display contrasts in darker scenes. The video outputs (3) can all be used simultaneously (so you could feed your whole house off this one machine), and the audio outputs allow for connection to any home theater receiver (Dolby Digital and DTS). The controls are simple and the remote is well laid out. The newly lowered price makes this one too good to pass up.

Summary: A review for the electronically challenged...
Review: Once I got this DVD player hooked up, I found it easy to use. The remote is well-organized, and it's easy to find and utilize all the features that make DVD player superior to your old VCR.

My problem was getting the thing hooked up to the TV. I have a TV with a built in VCR (bought precisely to avoid these hook-up problems); notably, the TV only has one input connection, and that was being used by my cable box. Being a logical person, I knew that this meant I had to route the DVD through the cable box or the cable box through the DVD player. The instruction manual was completely unhelpful. It pretty much assumed that I wouldn't have a cable box or VCR to worry about. If all you want to do is combine just a DVD player and a TV, it would be plenty helpful. I don't know anyone to whom that would apply, but if it's you, you're all set.

This next part isn't exactly the DVD player's fault. My cable box is a masterpiece of electronic illegibility - obviously designed to require a service call in order to change your hook up in any way. After several calls to the cable company, I was told that I had two options, both of which would require me to buy additional equipment and neither of which made any sense to me. Not wanting to incur a service charge from the cable company, I prevailed upon some friends who are electronic/computer experts. I live in Seattle - there are plenty of guys who live for this stuff. After much theorizing and trial and error, they finally got the DVD player working.

In all fairness, the DVD player wasn't responsible for all my problems - my TV and cable company were what created the chaos. Nevertheless, this is not an uncommon combination of equipment, and I think that the instruction manual should have at least attempted to address it.

Summary: Best DVD Player for Single Movies
Review: in terms of players that hold one dvd at a time, this one is the most elite. the sound and picture and excellent and the cd player on it is no exception. you can do anything with the remote; zoom in to take away the widescreen and such and such. The only problem is that the remote must be directly facing the dvd player

Summary: No nonsense
Review: I bought it. Amazon delivered it. I plugged it in. It worked; it's been working for months.

The appliance is quiet, the remote is comfortable, and I've never had any problems with the picture. What more could you want?

Summary: Go get this, .. now!
Review: ok, so i never go anywhere and write reviews... but in this case i must make an exception. to make a long story short i finally broke down and decided to get a DVD player (i know everyone's got one ;) and as with everything, i searched long and hard, did my homework beforehand, and literally read every review under the sun. the process took two months. after much research i settled on this player and i must say i am extremely pleased. the unit arrived in perfect condition after 4 days - i got it home, unpacked it, plugged it in and slapped in the matrix. and ...... i sat back. i cannot begin to describe how utterly beautiful the movie looked. razor sharp images, true lush life like colors, .. and the sound .. the sound simply blew me away! what a shame i'd been seeing this movie on VHS for such a long time. it was like watching for the first time. not once did the player skip or show signs of being overworked - i hear the matrix is one of the toughest movies on DVD players, so its a good test for ya' all. in short, perfection. i simply cannot see how this movie can look and sound any better (well i can - but that would take a progressive player hooked up to a $4,000 36" 16x9 TV set ;-) the controls are fairly simply, the unit is well built and the remote well laid out (though i would have made some of the buttons bigger and easier to reach). trust me, if you are looking for a "bargain" player, go - no run - and get this player. ... and to sweeten the deal amazon has by far the best price i could find ($149.00 and no taxes). 4 stars. 1/2 star minus for no progressive (a bit unfair of me at this price range, no?) and (more importantly, and a slight nuisance (at leat for me) minus 1/2 star for no backlight on the remote (ugh!) all in all a great player. way to go toshiba! ps. if you're considereing the 1700 go with the 1600 instead - i heard numerous reports that the 1700 models were plagued by production issues - what you gain is insignifiacant (a useless screen mode), though the production issues might have been worked out by now. your choice. again, a simply excellent DVD player. thanks.

Summary: Bang for the buck, great buy
Review: I finally decided to give in to the DVD impulse and began researching the different models available. I went to several different websites, looking at the technical details and customer reviews. After a total of six hours researching, I decided to go with the 1600 and it hasn't disappointed.

The 1600 combines high-resolution, S-Video capability, zoom features, ease of use, black enhancement, CD playability and tons of other features. The end result is very crisp pictures and great sound (it includes 'dts' formating which is the latest in sound technology but many DVDs don't yet take advantage of it).

Some folks have complained about noise from the player, or a relative absence of features compared to "all that DVD has to offer". Personally, I didn't want an overload of features I wasn't going to use jacking up the price, and the only significant noise I've heard coming from the player is during the initial spinup with the player scans a newly inserted disc, after that it's quite as a whisper.

Summary: oh Toshiba!
Review: This DVD player is a great entry level DVD player. It has all the stardard DVD features; Widescreen, fast forward/rewind, slow forward, play loop, Dolby Stero, 3D sound, S Video output, Digital Stero Output and regular Analog Stero Output, and supports all the stuff you find DVD's (Subtitles, Extras and such). The great thing about this DVD player are two fold; simple to use and it can keep up with the action. As strange as it sounds, some DVD players can not decode the information off a DVD fast enough when the action is fast on the screen. The result is skipping and jumping. Well, with this player that does not occur. All action, all the time is smooth.

Overall, though, I though this machine was not that great... I mean, it is not asthetically pleasing in the first place... and ok,.. it does skip and jump at times... and the special features you could find on any mid-entry player... oh, and toshiba is known for selling bad hardware...i just read an article in Electronic Trader Weekly... Forget about it... don't get it.

Summary: I'm In Love
Review: This is a great product. I decided I was going to spend up to $200 on a DVD player & did the comparisons & I decided on the sd-1600. Excellent picture. Easy to use. Slim and lightweight and has all the features I was looking for. No complaints. I've yet to go to the movies since it's arrival. I'll just wait for the movies I want to see to become available on DVD.

Summary: Mixed Feelings
Review: This is a great player, it's got everything a dvd beginner needs. The zoom feature is great, the picture is outstanding, decent connections, multiple advance speeds and decent restart speed, but... I can't stand the way it sometimes freezes. It may only be for a split second but, the picture holds for a split second too long. This happens about once every five movies. It's not the end of the world, actually a lot of people don't even notice it at first, but if you want an awesome machine, don't get this one. If you're a beginner and want a decent machine to watch dvd's while you save up your money for the HDTV and a premium system, this is the player for you.
