Summary: SWEET DVD PLAYER
Review: I love this dvd player.. I bought the pioneer dv-333 player and promptly returned it for this one! I also had the ps2 which was loud, this one I can't even hear the disc spinning at all. It looks cool too, the pioneer looked all boxy and old looking. It is so light, so quiet, never skips/pauses/errors, plays problem discs like Matrix and MIB, has sweet features like ZOOM and simulated surround sound, I love it. My gf loves the zoom since she hates letterbox, so it looks like a regular movie when zoomed and is very watchable... still better than VHS by far in zoom mode. I recommend this player to any average movie viewer, i don't think it accomodates to the videophile people... but nonetheless, it is the best I've had.

Summary: NO PROBLEMS!!!
Review: Very easy to use. My 8 and 5 year old sons can even operate it and manuever through the programs. No problems with skipping and freezing up. Excellent for even the older James Bond movies.

Summary: Not bad for the price...however........
Review: The Toshiba SD 1600 compared to other comparably priced DVD players is a good price. However there are a few things that keep it from receiving top marks from this reviewer.

For starters it does not play CD-R's, which in this day and age, with more and more people downloading music from the internet, it would be nice to have a player that's already hooked up to your home entertainment system to utilize for playback.

If CD-R playback is a priority I would recommend the Pioneer family of DVD players.

Another complaint is the remote is awkward to work with, not backlit, which of course goes for most DVD players on the market that are in this price range.

The player is also fairly noisy so if you are running this player through your television without any external amplification, you may be conscious of this.

I have noticed some miscues with this machine on certain discs especially in regards to menu operations with certain DVD's i.e. X-Men and Gladiator.

On the positive side the picture is razor sharp something that Toshiba is famous for, with the ability to pass either Dolby Digital, or DTS sound to a compatible receiver.

The player as is typical with Toshiba also has the added benefit of Digital Zoom which is kind of gimmicky but fun nonetheless.

In summation, if you are looking for basic player for playback on a standard television, with a sharp picture and not looking to bust the bank, don't care to listen to CD-R's on your home system, you would be hard pressed to find a better deal in this (price) range.

Summary: Great DVD player
Review: This player was very simple to set up. The instruction manual is very comprehensive. The remote control is easy to understand and use. This is my first experience with DVD and I am VERY IMPRESSED by not only the video quality but the audio quality. Toshiba is also (one of the players) out there that supports the multi-camera angle feature available on some DVD titles. I would strongly suggest to get The Matrix and X-Men DVD titles to experience the high quality of DVD technology.

Happy Holidays!

Summary: BEST ENTRY LEVEL PLAYER
Review: My decision to purchase this DVD player was based in part on the reviews here and currently having a Toshiba television with color stream, commonly called video component hookup, which seperates the colors and renders an exceptional picture. I searched high end to low end stores looking for comparable players and a variety of brand names. No doubt about it, some of those are excellent players too, but nothing comes close to the performance and reliability of this Toshiba player for the price.

It has all the features I think that anyone could use or would want to use. The picture is crystal clear, and the sound is stunning. Since I have not owned the other players in this particular level, I can't really comment on them. I can say that for the money, feature for feature, I really do not see how anyone can go wrong with this player at this price. Also of note, it was chosen as one of the top players in my favorite consumer magazine.

Setup time was less than five minutes. It took longer to connect the cables than to use the player. The options are well laid out. The remote is a little small, but nicely manageable and a good change from the larger remotes out there in today's electronics world.

If you do buy this player, or any other with component hookups, go for the monster cable for component hookup, and audio cables, or similar high quality cables. Sure, they add to the cost, but in the long run, the money for the quality cables will pay off.

Summary: does not include dolby digital decoding
Review: My receiver has 5.1 audio inputs for dolby pro-logic but I couldn't use this DVD player with it because it doesn't include a "decoder" which would provide the 6 audio outputs you need. I'm upgrading to the sony that includes the decoder. Otherwise it seemed like a good unit. The dolby digital systems are incredibly confusing and not explained very well on amazon.

Summary: Warning! Does not play CD-R!
Review: This is a great machine, though please don't make the same mistake I did. I didn't read the fine print before ordering. If I had, I would've learned that this machine IS NOT compatible with CD-R. That is unfortunate since it is a new machine (shame on Toshiba). I gave one star so people would notice these comments before ordering. Otherwise it is a 5 star machine.

You have been forewarned!

Summary: For the price this is an amazing product
Review: This is the first DVD I have ever owned. I saw favorable reviews on Amazon & decided to order it. I'm glad I did. I know that there is an impressive array of technical specifications but I don't pretend to be able to explain them. However, what I can explain is that it is simple to set up .. it took my 14 year old son only a few minutes to do so. The audio and video quality are excellent. There is on screen programing which is understandable. There is the ability to attach more than one monitor. The remote control is reasonably easy to use ... it's not confusing. The slow motion and frame by frame viewing is really good .. much better than on a VCR. The zoom is a great feature. I don't have a state of the art television with large screen and stereo but, when I do upgrade my tv, I plan to keep this DVD. I am confident there is plenty of room to upgrade my tv while still having all my needs met by this reasonably priced DVD. I thought something this good would have to cost more but, I guess the cost of this sort of technology is going down. This is a great product.
