Summary: Stopped Working After One Year
Review: A few months ago I started having problems turning it on, opening the DVD etc... and suddenly it would work. But now, it just doesn't work. It is like the electric current isn't reaching where it needs to go to make it work. It is on standby mode, but won't turn on, open or play. I have a rented DVD stuck in there and I think I have to break it open to get it out! I'm definitly going to smash this with a hammer!

Summary: A great...
Review: big piece of crap. Also a wonderful paperweight. Get another brand unless you like to spend money on things that work half the time and then break completely 9 months after you buy them.

Summary: Nice unit but will not play DVD-R reliably
Review: great with commercial DVD, just don't try to routinely use it to read your own recordings. apparently there are no available firmware fixes of any kind. very attractive unit cosmetic-wise

Summary: Problems with MP3's
Review: I bought this DVD player mainly to play MP3 audio. It starts to have problems if there are more than about 20 songs on the CD, and the fuller the disk is, the more problems it seems to have -- mainly, VERY frequent skips during playback (every 2 or 3 seconds).

I only have this problem with MP3 disks, but they whole point of being able to play MP3 files (to me, anyway) is to be able to put a disk with 100 songs on it and hit "shuffle."

BTW -- to play songs randomly, you have to put them in separate folders ("groups"). It selects a group at random, plays the songs within that group in alphabetical order, and then selects another group at random, etc. On some disks, it tended to pick to pick the groups in the same order each time -- i.e. its random number generator isn't so random. It also takes a fairly long time to select a new group -- 5 or 6 seconds (that's a long pause between songs.)

Sometimes I could hear the disk whirling, especially when first inserted.

Everything else seemed fine. If you don't care about the MP3 features, it's a good buy for the money. Especially if you already have a universal remote, or don't mind using a seperate remote for the TV.

Mine's going back to the store tonight, though.

Summary: Great deal..If you don't have HDTV, this is the one.
Review: I finally decided to get a dvd player, after looking and looking. The price on this one was absolutely great, and JVC convinced me. So I popped for it, and it arrived in two days. It was simple to hook up, flawless in performance, and a great improvement over VHS. I know [Amazon.com] bleeps the prices if I put any here, but I got it through the GOLD BOX and could not be happier with the price or product. I am using the S Video output into a XBR Sony, and plan to add the speaker system next. The picture is beautiful. Flawless. No moire, no ringing, no noise. The audio has yet to be heard, since I have not set up the home theatre sound yet. But I expect it to be fine. One thing, this unit does not have optical audio output, just coax. That is fine with me.
PS. I am a tv broadcast engineer since 1972. I repair monitors and vcrs. I know video. This one is great for anybody who does not have a 62 inch hdtv thing taking up half their house.

Summary: Decent Flexible DVD Player
Review: I got this model as a gift and am generally happy with it. I want to dispute the claim of one of the reviewers where he/she saw alternate bright and dark picture on some movies. This is a problem only if you connect the RCA video out into a VCR player, then use regular TV cable from your VCR to the TV.

Get a RF modulator (from RadioShack) if your TV does not have a RCA video input. Don't connect via your VCR.

Summary: poor quality
Review: I have a JVC TV and did alot of research before makng a purchase.
I got this dvd player at a closeout price from sears. I have only had it 3 weeks but today it goes back. I have played a few dvd's and have found the picture quality to be fairly dark with a funny reddish cast to it. The sound quality is horrible. I do not want surround sound but I would like to hear the movie. I have to turn the volume on the tv almost as high as it will go which causes you to have to lower the volume when there are louder sceens. I hooked up the S-video output but it did not improve picture or sound quality. The remote is not that great and will not control your tv. The search continues.....

Summary: Decent DVD player
Review: I like my new DVD player now that I have learned how to use it but anybody who does not have a RF modulator for an older TV may find they have a problem. Got the modulater and my DVD player is clear and audio is good --I have no complaint.

Summary: nice player, but problem with closed-captions
Review: I picked up this player about a week ago to replace my 4-year-old RCA player which is starting to glitch on me. Overall, this is a very nice player with a decent remote control. The error-correction was very good, as it played some of my glitchy DVDs flawlessly. One cool feature with the on-screen display was showing the the data bit-rate at which the DVDs were encoded.

Unfortunately, one major flaw I found with the player was that it wouldn't pass through closed-caption signals to my TV. I'm not sure if this was a problem with just my player, but I think it may be a design flaw with all JVC players because I read about the same problem with some older JVC players from over a year ago.

I had to return my player, as I couldn't figure out how to make the closed-captions work properly. My new Panasonic passes through CC properly with no hitches, but it doesn't play my glitchy DVDs as smoothly as this JVC does.

If closed-captions are not a critical criteria for you, this JVC might fit your needs perfectly. If you are hard of hearing and absolutely need CC, skip this player.

Summary: Lousy instructions
Review: I received my DVD last week, and I still cannot get it to work. I have tried setting it up on three different TV's, following the instructions given, and I get nothing. No picture, no menu, no setup, nothing. I have tried to contact JCV by phone and website, and I have gotten nowhere so far. I'm about ready to send it back and try another brand.
