Summary: disappointed sony custumer
Review: Eleven months ago (Christmas, 2001), I brought home the sony (after returning another major brand dvd player because it would stall and freeze mid-motion). I was really depending on the sony name...I was impressed with sony anyway, because I had been given an old, second-hand sony trinitron tv. It was made in '73, given to me in '82...gave up the ghost in 2000! Enough about that. since I haven't had that much experience with dvd's, just playing/viewing I can't comment on the finer points of operation. Just that it shows us great pictures and sound!! I have it going through my stereo. can't wait to upgrade using surround and a/v reciever. My only problem...I lost the remote!!

Summary: lower quality than I would expect from sony
Review: I bought this unit last summer and initially, I was very happy with it. But, the more and more I use it, the more problems I find with it. The most obvious problem I've found is the streaking. In scenes where there is repeated, rapid change from dark to light, the player displays colored straks momentarily across the screen. Most noticable during scenes like the scene in "Aliens" when the aliems attack the marines in force inside a room lit in red. The gunflashes constrasting against the red light cause the DVD player to render the scene horribly. The whole scene is so marred by these lightning-like color flashes that it is nearly unwatchable.
Another noticable problem is it's susceptability to scratches. My copy of "seven" got scratched when I loaned it out to someone (who BTW, will never borrow my DVDs again). The scratches are not bad, but this player rewinds to the beginning of the movie whenever it encounters the scratch. Granted, a scatched disc is not the players fault, but my computer and PS2 can play the disc without interruption. They can also play movies without the streaks. The other problems I've encountered were minor such as the rather weak remote and confusing interface at times.
On the plus side, the unit is very compact and weighs very little, so if you have to move it around alot you won't break your back. I also like the selection of connectors you get on the back for the price you pay.
If I had the money to buy a DVD player all over again, I would definately consider looking for something else. This players shortcomings are too great to justify buying it when there are superior players available for about the same cost.

Summary: Sony DVP-NS300 is the absolute best!!
Review: I really love this DVD player. It is the best Sony product ever. For a DVD player that is under $200, it sure has pretty PERFECT PICTURE. The sound is WONDERFUL!!! The only little, and I mean little, problem is the block noise. Even if the BNR is on, it may show up a little on the DVD. But, this is NOT the players fault. It called an MPEG-2 artifact left behind. Other then that, THIS DVD PLAYER IS PRACTICALLY THE BEST EVER. Everyone who has something negative to say about it has a seriously defective unit, or is exaggerating. Plus, BIG NEWS!!!! This models book and box states that this DVD player cannot play CD-R or CD-RW discs. Well, this is not true. It plays of coarse all Sony CD-R and CD-RW
discs PERFECTLY. It also plays Fuji discs as well. I definitely recommend Sony CD-RW. It plays just soooooooooooo good.

Summary: Does not work right
Review: I wanted to give the player 5 stars and make people believe the slogan that Sony (R) is always the one and only. But this is another case where it is not- Maybe my player is more sensitive. But it can't handle anything but an almost perfect copy of a disc which means that rental DVDs are basically useless even after several cleanings. I'll probably sell it & just record movies off cable which means I'm stuck with camp, and the same 10 (3 of them with Monroe) films plus 5 Song and Dances for my $55 a month fee from Time$Warner. Maybe I'll check out Bad Boys 10 at cineplex 52 and The Big Labolski or Iranian statements against the infidel films at the retro cinema. So my recommendation is- if you are only using near flawless DVDs with no anything on them I would pass on this player. This probably is not DVDs you get at the library or rent. It is probably like your $180 season 1 of X Files that you have taken out of the box VERY carefully because they are so easy to damage due to the packaging. Besides in the next year or two they'll just change formats on you and they'll have a new signal that won't play even brand new non scratched perfect DVDs right. And they'll be a built-in inherenet flaw in that technology so you'll have to switch yet again. PEOPLE BEFORE WE WASTE OUR MONEY ON HUGE DVD COLLECTIONS WE CAN'T SELL or relegate to a DVD collection only TV WE NEED TO BANG OUR MONKEYS IN CONGRESS AND THE INDUSTRY FOR MAX 48 WITH A SYSTEM THAT CAN PLAY IT WITHOUT THE PROBLEMS OF SCRATCHES. MAX 48 WHICH IS ALREADY INVENTED BUT BLOCKED BY THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE FROM COMING OUT IS 5X BETTER THAN THE BEST FILM PRINT WHICH IS 20% BETTER THAN THE BEST DIGITAL.
IT CAN WORK WITH NON MAX 48 FILMS AND IT COSTS 1/10 THE COST OF DIGITAL TO MAKE AND SHOW A MAX 48 PRINT. But on the positive side something like Kazaa will probably finally be on the Mac so I can get perfect copies everytime and no scratches. And it's legal due to the companies not complying with the law and gouging us through collusion or however they ruled it. Of course that doesn't stop the companies from suing or the Judges setting a precident that goes against current law. But the point is Kazza and music downloads are suppose to be legal.
P.S. The supposedly much cheaper microwave combination internet/cable can't come soon enough for me. I bet these new companies will give bigger jobs to the heads of the FCC than strapped for cash Time$(brokeass)Warner.

Summary: Excellent low-end model!
Review: I'm not quite sure why the star rating on this product isn't higher, because I've only had great experiences with my player. This is the first DVD player I've owned, and it has performed wonderfully. The picture is great, the sound is fantastic, and it has always played every DVD I put in without a problem. I've had it now for 2 months and used it often.
I agree with the first review that the downside is the remote, which doesn't glow. However this is a minor annoyance, with the quality of the product for the price. Another con I've noticed is that once the disc is in the tray, it's not completely silent. You can hear it spinning and sometimes change chapters. BUT, it is barely noticeable, especially if your player is behind closed glass doors.
If you're looking for a high-end model with every feature you desire and want it to perform perfectly, then you have no choice but to pay more. However, this model is perfect for those that can't spend a lot but still want their DVD player to work. I think the Sony brand is trustworthy and I would highly recommend this player.

Summary: it was fine... before it broke
Review: I've had this DVD player for a little over a year now. And before a few days ago I never had any problems with it. My only complaint back then was that the remote didn't have numbers on it making it somewhat difficult to do a few things. But that was only a minor problem. Now my player won't play more than a few seconds of any DVD. I'm lucky if I can even get to the menu. The player just sets itself back to standby mode. It does this with or without a DVD in it. I've had problems getting help from SONY. I used to love this player but now I'm seriously disappointed and looking at other brands for my soon to be new DVD player.

Summary: Will rarely play a movie from beginning to end
Review: If you try to play a DVD that is anything but pristine out-of-the-wrapper condition, the player is sure to send you back somewhere earlier in the movie. Extremely frustating! Will never buy Sony again.

Summary: Great way to watch movies from Blockbuster
Review: If your a first time DVD buyer looking for a high quality low(er)cost unit, this is the DVD player to purchase. I wanted a unit I could watch movies rented from our local Blockbuster store. Since purchasing this Sony 6 months ago, I've only had one movie skip (have watched around 25 movies) .
The player has a great menu that's very user friendly. It has a good selection of digital outputs, s video, and component outs for hook-up to your stereo/TV. It loads the DVD very quickly (5-7 seconds) and the scan is clear smooth and fast. To my understanding it also plays some CDR's, but I have yet to try it.
The downfall to the unit is the remote. The buttons are very close together and do not glow. So when watching a movie in the dark, it might require turning on a light until one gets very familiar with the remote. Overall this is the best low cost unit on the market. Ask a sales person at any store and they will confirm the quality and user friendly menu.

Summary: Sony DVP NS300
Review: The reason why I will not give the player 5 stars is that I have had rental discs skip or stop. They often appeared scratch free enough but I'm no technician. However after taking the time to clean them they were playable. That said the machine is very good on visuals- if you want a lot of features then spend more. But this unit will give you an excellent picture. Until the people in charge allow us to have the 500% better, 1/10 the cost for making films Max 48 this is as good as it is going to get for home (or theater for that matter) viewing. And you don't have a lot of choice in the theaters. In my world it's Misery flicks to make us feel bad, Iranian Cinema and Bad Boys 10. If you're lucky they throw you something like The Apartment by Billy Wilder. Little more, little less. Any problem with the picture quality is that the people releasing DVDs do not take the time to get rid of scratches in the print or produce the best quality picture. This is not the fault of the player. Recommended for any one but people who want to do tricks or use it as a CD player- I don't know if it is good for that- I use an iPOD. However if you rent or have used a disc for a while you might want to clean them first with pledge or windex and let them dry. If you have scratches I understand that you can fix them with optical paint. Does this work?
