Summary: This is a DVD Player in name only.
Review: Any claim that the machine is capable of playing a DVD is completely false. I have owned this machine for two years, and it nearly always refuses to load DVDs (from the day I purchased it on - no problems with Audio CDs though). On the rare occasion it accepts a DVD it crashes frequently. It is not a DVD player - it is a cheapy built black box that is capable of accepting DVDs for brief periods of time before it finds it can not read them. I would have a similar success rate watching DVDs if I placed the DVDs in the refrigerator and then connected the refrigerator to the television with a rope.

Summary: BE AWARE
Review: BUYERS, BE AWARE.
I had 2 DVD players made by Pioneer. They are nice machines... for a little over a year. Then the warranty expires. The problem these players seem to have has to do with poorly designed dual laser pick up (one - for DVDs, the other one - for CDs and Video CDs). The first player I had stopped playing CDs and Video CDs, I got the other one - this one stopped playing DVDs.
On the positive side - the picture is very good, so if you are after a short-term buy go ahead, otherwise look for another brand.

Summary: Awesome DVD plaer and deal but....
Review: Do not get me wrong, I looove the quality of DVD player. However, it took me forever to connect to my TV so that it would play sound. The picture was just fine but there was no sound coming through. I finally figured out that I would have to turn off the dolby digital playback feature (no thanks to the manual) Anyway its my fault for having such a good player connected to only a normal TV. I'll bet you'll be satisfied with the playback of this.

Summary: Big value for the money
Review: For less than $300 with the DV-434 Pioneer packs a lot of features that I couldn't find in any other brand name DVD player in this price range. It has coaxial and optical digital outputs and component video outputs. Also, it plays CD-R and CD-RW, so you can play your own home made music CD, even your home made movies, considerring that it plays VCD and SVCD formats. Another nice feature is the progressive scan, which may allow you to take advantage of your (future) HDTV, even if it is limited to the 16:9 format. Adding to this that it is a very reliable player, no skips, no freezes, I consider that this is DVD player is a very good value for the money.

Summary: Great Product for the $$$
Review: I bought this DVD Player and it has worked wonderfully, I wanted a player that wouldnt need to be replaced soon into the future thats why I chose this player for the progressive scan feature. The unit produces excellent audio and video quality and has many options on the remote. I am very satisfied with this product and would recommend.

Summary: Really good bang for the buck !!
Review: I bought this DVD player to replace a panasonic DVD player that was about a year old. My old one could not decompress full screen video when it was taxed. Scenes like water where the entire screen is changing was just to much so it would look like satelite TV when it is raining really, really hard.

I also considered some other cheaper players but found this one with progressive scan to be an amazing value. Progressive scan basically means the video is sampled twice as fast. I beleive to take adavatage of this you have to have and RGB input on your TV which my $1500 Sony 61 inch cheapo big screen did.

The picture is MUCH better that with my old DVD player.

Progressive Scan is worth the extra money is the bottom line if your TV can handle it.

Summary: no Dolby, only DTS
Review: I bought this player 2 years ago. When the DVD tray opens it closes automatically on it's own. You have to grab it and hold it open to insert/remove a disk.

Then 6 months ago it started sputtering, no picture, no sound. Hit FF and then Play and it might work for a bit and then stumble. It took a long time to figure out that for some reason, it can't get through the dolby digital movies but if I set it to DTS (for those DVDs with the opion) the movie plays perfectly. Of course, now I don't know if DTS is on death row or it's just a Dolby problem?
