Rating: Summary: This unit goes out of synch frequently! Review: After purchasing a Toshiba SD3109 from a trusted dealer who recommended it, I was amazed to discover that you cannot scan forward or back at more than x1 on that unit! Try getting 20 minutes through a video with very long (or no) chapters (e.g. the 'Making of' video on the 'Shining' DVD, jumping back to an earlier part of the video to look at something again, and then trying to get back to where you left off 20 minutes further in. You can't do it without sitting through the rest of the video again! Unnacceptable in my book. I returned the Toshiba immediately and bought a Sony DVP S-530D. Now I discover this unit has a serious lip-synch problem on the second layer of dual-layer DVDs. Several of my DVDs are unwatchable on it because of this. And from the reviews here on Amazon I see I'm not the only one having this problem. Amazingly, it sounds like it happens on all except the $1000 Sony unit! Consumers deserve better than stupid usability and technical flaws like these.
Rating: Summary: Great DVD player, with one quirk Review: A great DVD player. I've seen the lip sync problem intermittently and only briefly on a few DVDs. The one criticism I have of the 530 is that it doesn't play (audio) CD-Rs.
Rating: Summary: audio lag problem is awful Review: Granted the picture is excellent, but having the voice be out of synch with the lips moving is ridiculous. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get something fixed by Sony? And think of how few people will have the diligence to pester Sony long enough to get it corected? My advice: buy a machine that works properly from the start and stay away from this known defective unit.
Rating: Summary: audio issues, but still a GREAT DVD player Review: a GREAT DVD player!! but unfortunately, i have the "audio-lag-bug" with 2 of my 6 movies i own, which is why i gave it 4 stars instead of five. so, i called sony, and they took down all my info, where i bought the player, and what movies i had a problem with. i guess the issue is this: the way certain manufacturers produce their movies conflicts with certain DVD players. sony is aware of the problem and is trying to make a "fixer" for it. kind of like a re-call on a car, they will notify all owners who call sony when they can bring it in for a simple repair. only problem, they don't know when this re-call will be, and, if you try to return the player for another one of the same model number you still may run into the same problem, so you are better off waiting for the re-call. ...all in all, i still LOVE this DVD player!!! i wouldn't trade it for another brand or model! (quick fix tip: turn off the player and re-start movie from the chapter you left off at)
Rating: Summary: Bad Acting? No. Bad-DVD player! Review: Eventhough I read the reviews on this site prior to buying my 530D, I figured the sound synchronization problem (see other reviews below) would've been corrected by mid-September. Alas, after a week of using my Sony, the sound synchronization gremlin was in full bloom during 'True Lies.' And I just thought Tom Arnold had no timing in his acting. Anyway, I find this trait annoying and inexcusable in a $400 player. So, instead of repairing it (and cancelling an Aliens DVD marathon for this evening), I'm returning it and ponying up another $100 for the 550-D because I'm a sucker (and it has additional features that I want anyway). For neophyte DVDers considering taking the plunge: The picture is worth it! The sound is worth it! And not rewinding a VHS tape makes my time more valuable. Don't wait--get into DVD!! As for the 530-D, wait a couple months till the bugs are fixed. Otherwise, a fine, fine player.
Rating: Summary: Awesome video and sound!! Review: This Sony player is awesome. The picture is crystal clear and the sound with the decoder is great. No problems whatsoever and everything I ever asked for. No "lip sync problem". Fantastic!
Rating: Summary: Great System Review: I've only owned this for a few weeks and it is GREAT. I only wish my reciver had the video plugs to get the true features out of this system. I paid a little more than I wanted to, but I'm not sorry at all!!
Rating: Summary: Sony Products are the Bomb, and so's this DVD. Review: For those you who bought the model DVP-S530D withoout a decoder, you probably got riped off by the retailer. I got mine at Good Guys, and the tag specifically said it has the Dobly Digital or AC3 decoder on board, which supports 6 channels of awesome audio output. I bought it, tried it, and loved it. The only thing this baby lacks is the dual lens drive offered on higher models. Must buy.
Rating: Summary: Picture quality and sound of the Sony DVSP530D blows me away Review: Before deciding to purchase my first DVD, I did lots of homework. I checked out the Panasonic and Toshiba lines and looked around on and off-line. Having reached the point of having to make a decision, I checked out this area for other consumer comments. It was interesting to see that although there is lots said about the audio sync problem in this model, the clear majority of those who purchased it gave it a five star rating. Well, I am here to say that I can understand why! I purchased the 530D recently and experienced the audio sync situation once already. But, I realized that because of all the talk about it, I was looking for it and it turned out not to be as noticeable as I expected and it didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the film I was viewing. In fact, all of the pluses way out-weighed this little 'glitch'. Picture, color, sound, and all other features are extraordinary. I believe I made the right choice.
Rating: Summary: Great Sony picture, but latency with the audio Review: This is my first DVD player for the entertainment center in my home. So far, DVD is all that it's said to be and more. I went with this model, because of the Sony name and its reputation for quality. I discovered however, that some titles, for reasons unexplainable by Sony, have a "lag" in the audio portion. Its like watching a "B" movie, where the lips are moving, but the dialogue is off. It becomes quite obvious about half way through the movie. Sony, when contacted, admits to the problem, and will "let you know when we have a fix". Hard to accept in this day and age. Especially at this price. Other then that, no complaints...
