Rating: Summary: Better than I expected.. Review: For the price, this dvd, video, and audio player is great. The DVD player looks better than it does on this site. Playing audio cd's works fine. I am not dissappointed with this DVD player at all!
Rating: Summary: One of the best Value for Money DVD players around Review: Frankly all of us when spending on something look for the best value that money can buy, especially Electronics and Cars!! It is this space that Philips' DVD Q35 falls. It started out with a price tag around $200 but in the last months of 2003 it has been selling for about $80 (read Fry's). At this price it is one of the best DVD player that one can buy. First, it plays every format, except DVD-Audio, SACD. Second it can support both NTSC and PAL video formats (very very few players in US market have this feature). Third and most important, this player can be made region free to play DVDs from all over the world. Fourth but not the final, the Video and Audio quality is excellent almost at par with high end Denon, Onkyo systems. Has all sorts of connection possibilities. Don't even think twice. Just get it, you wont be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Low quality equipment Review: I am extremely disappointed with this Progressive-Scan DVD player. I am writing this to keep anyone from making the same mistake I made being lured into the low price. When watching DVDs, about 1 in 2 of the disks freeze in the middle of watching. I've watched the same disks on other DVD players and not had the problem. Frequently, I'll have to go to another scene to continue the move. Besides that problem, I find the system menus slow and cumbersome, and unintuitive. This is obviously a cheaply made equipment with very little quality.
Rating: Summary: Nice looking, works great Review: I bought this to replace a Sony DVD player that died after 2 years. I haven't used the progressive scan features, but I'm using it with s-video and the optical sound out, and am very happy with the sound an picture. It also seems to handle dirty or scratched disks much better than the Sony, which used to just backwards or forwards some huge amount when it ran into trouble. The Philips seems to handle it pretty gracefully. One thing I really like about the Philips is that for the time display, it shows the total time you are through the movie (is the correct DVD term "title"?). My Sony would just show me how far I was into a chapter. I like that it can display CDs of photos and play MP3 CDs. The front panel is pretty bare bones, but has the basics you need. My nits with it are pretty minor: If you turn it off with the remote, you can't just wake it up by pressing open on the front panel -- you have to turn it off and one. There's no eject button on the remote (although you can debate if that's actually useful). And, it freezes up on a CD of pictures I burned from my Mac. I'm not sure how general that problem is. But, overall, I'm very happy with it.
Rating: Summary: Philips has a problem - now it's my problem Review: I purchased the Philips DVDQ35 from Amazon about a 2 months ago. It played photo CDs and regular CDs fine. The problems came when playing DVDs. On EVERY DVD I play, it starts skipping and freezing after about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours into the movie. This even includes brand new DVDs fresh from the box. I called Philips and the said it sounded like a hardware problem to them. They shipped me a brand new unit - new serial and manufacture date. Guess what ... the new unit does the same thing - exactly. I searched the internet for "Philips DVD player skipping" and have since found out that there are a lot of people that have been junking their Philips DVD players for exactly the same reason - skipping and freezing during DVD playback. It seems Philips will gladly keep sending you new units with the same problem (YOU have to pay for the shipping back to them), but won't refund money or give you a comparable model that works. I guess instead of repeatedly sending back the players, I'll have to eat the loss and junk this one. No more Philips for me.
Rating: Summary: not enough Review: It's hard to tell if this is the same one I bought, since Target doesn't list model numbers on this site. I bought the Q35A, partially as a replacement for my CD player. Unfortunately, this DVD player, while it's great for DVDs, is a *really* poor CD player. It has none of the standard features of even the cheapest CD, like shuffle play or programmable track order (ok, it has that, but it uses a complex interface on the TV). Worst, even when playing a regular CD, it would seem to "load" a second or two of the song before playing. That means that the first couple of seconds of some songs *doesn't play*. Crazy. MP3 play is also rather finicky. If you organize your MP3s into folders on discs, the player will not be able to simply play them all; you'll have to use the interface on the TV to navigate to each folder and push play. If you have any other files on the CD (such as the very common "playlist" file), the MP3s will not load at all. Finally, I had a couple of questions that I asked Philips customer service, and it was wretchedly bad: a girl who had no idea what I was talking about read from a series of yes/no questions before finally telling me to return the player to the store.
Rating: Summary: Value for money Review: Its worth paying. Its nice, plays MP3s, JPEG and all DVDs that I have tried. I have tried PAL VCDs as well. The negative side - MP3 menu is too thin.
Rating: Summary: Value for money Review: Its worth paying. Its nice, plays MP3s, JPEG and all DVDs that I have tried. I have tried PAL VCDs as well. The negative side - MP3 menu is too thin. It does not play or hangs with some DVDs, the other player I have also does the same. Whereas my laptop DVD player plays that.
Rating: Summary: This DVD player ... Review: looks AWESOME but like most other things, looks can be deceptive. It lacks a basic funtionality - playing DVDs of other regions. Also, I am not too pleased with the functions on the remote control. But most importantly, it DOES play movies at above-average quality and resolution.
Rating: Summary: What a disappointment! Review: Philips is a brand name that years ago was known as setting the industries standards in the audio world! The performance of this DVD player suggests they merely found their way as most other mass produced "wanna be" electronic manufacturers and are concerned with profits only! This DVD player played a couple discs fine and then the trouble began.............it progressively got worse; skipping; stopping and not working at all..............regardless what the disc was. Philips has a WONDERFUL exchange policy that can take 48 days. The most prolific thing this player produced when operating was FRUSTRATION!!! Only buy this if you enjoy taking a 10 pound sledge hammer to electronic components!!!!
