Summary: only one or two complaints
Review: 1. You will always have to tell it to do something twice. For instance, walking up to the player and pressing open will not open it for you, you will have to press the open button once more. The first you press any button- only readies it for your command (on the remote too). A little irritating, but livable.

2. Playing DVD's is like a dream, but cd's are a different story. I've had many cd's that are flawless on the surface (not cd-recordable, but manufactured) that the player will get tripped up on. All the sudden, your music stops. The player is trying, but can't play the track (this doesn't happen all that much- but nonetheless very irritating).

As far as the "progressive scan" thing is concerned, it's peace of mind. I have an HD rear-projection TV that I used with a standard sony player (the jukebox- not progressive scan), and honestly, I notice ZERO difference between a progressive scan player and one without it.

Summary: Terrific DVD Player!
Review: As has been previously mentioned, you really do need an HDTV to take full advantage of this product's capabilities.
On the other hand, it can be utilized with any top quality
monitor with outstanding results.

In either case the picture quality is most outstanding
crisp, clean, everything one could desire in such a player.

You could certainly pay more for a DVD Player but you would be hard pressed to find one of such quality at this price.
In fact there is very little difference in picture quality between this and units costing much more.

I consider it a real bargain. I have looked at nearly every
comparable unit and many costing substantially more.
In my opinion you can't go wrong with the Sony NS700P.
I have already done the research. Of course everyone has
a different perspective but you owe it to yourself to check this one out!

Summary: Pretty Good Value
Review: For people who are fans of sony or just one a good DVD player, then this one's for you. Alot of Dvd players around might as well just have the same features but you can't beat out the quality of this DVD player. As usual, the player comes with Dolby Digital and DTS (But no built in so you will just have to get a reciever with built in DD and DTS). It also comes out with a nice feature (for those who don't have DD decoders or recievers) which are Digital Cinema Sound modes (Always a factor in the big Sony industry). Digital Sound modes are usually just used if your not using surround sound and just want a little experience. Not as big as it sounds but its still a nice feature.

Setting up the DVD player wasn't hard at all. Just plug it in, set up the cables into the reciever and/or tv, use the automatic setup menu and then your done. And whats also great about this player is that it comes with Progressive Scan (Just for those who have an HDTV and it produces a better scan than most DVD players do. It comes with a multibrand remote that can also be used with tv's, plays CD-R's and CD-RW's and brings out the quality for your favorite DVD's. (Great use for Sony's Hi-Scan telivisions).

Pros: Easy Setup
Plays CD-R's
Good quality in picture and sound
Good handy remote
Nice design

Cons: Doesn't have MP3 playback
Price should be a little bit lower

Summary: A Step Backward
Review: I had high hopes when I bought this unit to replace my four-year-old Sony S3000 DVD player. However, I was very disappointed with the 700P's interlaced picture (regular TV) compared to my older unit (I didn't have a HDTV to test the progressive scan feature). The colors from this unit were washed out and bled, and there was an overall lack of clarity and crispness to the picture. A weekend of tweaking the many picture adjustments made little difference. So I took back the unit and exchanged it for the new JVC XVS65GD: great interlaced picture, more features, more solidly built -- and $75 cheaper!

Review: I have a ...Sony DVD player. Sony claims a 1 year part/90 day labor warranty. First, the machine simply stopped working after 5 months. Second, to send it in for warranty repair, Sony wants (Money)for labor, upfront, plus I have to pay for the cost to ship the item. They don't assess the problem and then give you an estimate, permitting you to decide whether or not you want to go through with a repair. Third, when I noted that the cost to repair closely approaches the cost of a new machine, their customer service representative told me I should have purchased the extended warranty.

My suggestion is, buy a more reliable product, not a Sony. Check out what the warranty, when you purchase. Select a product with 1 year parts and labor. Otherwise, find out what the manufacturer charges for warranty service.

Watch out for deceptive warranty policies.

Summary: Progressive Scan + HDTV is Outstanding
Review: I just replaced a 2+ year old Sony 550 DVD with the 700P. My DVD collection has never had it so good. My first spin was Pearl Harbor. WWOOOOOWWW If you've never seen 480P on a 61" Sony HDTV....well, trust me, the picture is fantastic. The enclosed remote runs the DVD, my Sony 940 Receiver, and my HDTV..at least enough features that I can make all the needed selections. I didn't notice any improvement in sound for PCM, DTS or DD5.1 but I've always been happy with the sound qualities of my receiver.

Downside?..I wish the face was black rather than silver as all of my components, except the DVD are black.

One of the leading audio magazines reportedly claimed that the 700P coupled the a Sony HDTV was a dream combination....I would concur.

Review: If you don't like this system it is because you do not know how to use its many functions or you bought a lemon! It is a very impressive buy if you know what you are doing or if you have an HD ready TV. It plays XVCDs, SVCDs, MP3s (long titles too), and Layer 0/1 DVDs. VCDs tend to be blocky and this DVD player helps by adding tools to clear up the picture. Colors are vivid if you use component video or even S-Video. DTS/Dolby digital (I use the optical out) sounds incredible. I have two such systems; one on a Philips 46" HD TV and a Philips 27" Flat Screen, both using component video and the picture on both is simply great. For the price you cannot get much better. You would have to spend much more than 200 bucks to do any better.
