Summary: Mixed Emotions
Review: I have played with this player for about a week now. It's a nice player for the money but barely. The only major issue I encountered was that for me, the vcd's play in 16:9 only. So on my 16:9 enhanced tv it looks stretched and bad. My Apex does what it should on all vcd's and svcd's. This one just doesn't want to listen. Another issue I had was that you could only set progressive scan on and off in the menu. The Apex I own had it on the remote itself. Speaking of the remote, the layout is HORRIBLE. Buttons are just thrown everywhere. The main reason I purchased this player was for the region free mod. There are lots of movies out there that we don't get and can only import. It is lame that they can't just play on any player you have. I read the review "Blank Screen Booby". In it, they write that Toshiba booby trapped the player by not allowing you to restore the default video settings. I don't think you should write a review when you don't read anything. 1. The manual tells you not to turn on Progressive Scan if your tv is not compatible. 2. If you do manage to do such a thing anyway on page 14 in the bottom right corner it tells you how to set the player back to the default settings. I could not find the booby trap you speak of.

If only my Apex AD-2500 was region free. It would be the perfect player for me.

I would hold out and try to find a better player.

Summary: Doesn't work using Progressive Scan
Review: I just bought this and was eagerly wathing Lord of the Rings on our 55" Philips HDTV using the progressive scan feature. The picture was amazing. WAS...since the progressive scan started to fail. I'm returning this and hoping it was just a defective unit. I had a Toshiba SD-2300 DVD player before and I still love it, we just bought this because the SD-2300 doesn't have progressive scan (it does make a difference in the HDTV).

Summary: Piece of junk
Review: I just bought this DVD player, but not from Amazon. I pulled it out of the box and set it up. I loaded a DVD to test it out. I hit play and started watching the movie. The remote did not work well, and I had to press the buttons over and over until finally it would work. Then after 10 minutes I tried to unload the DVD, but none of the buttons on the front work, nor on the remote. Then the DVD player shut down and won't even turn on. I cannot get my disc out of the player, and I need to mail it back to get a refund. I've had this player for 4 hours now after waiting eagerly for it for a week. I am really disappointed. It was packed really well, so I doubt it was damaged in transit. I'll never buy one again.

Summary: Amazing!
Review: I just bought this DVD player, with plans to upgrade my TV to a Philips 30" widescreen. However, i am canceling those plans, as this DVD player has brought a whole new level of qulity to my TV (A 2 year old high-end Panasonic). The quality is amazing, watching Lord of the Rings, you can see every wisker on Aragon's face.
Not only that, but set the DVD player on 16:9 and the DVD will almost fill the screen. It works similar to Pan and Scan, except that it is a broader, and allows you to really enjoy widescreen movies!
Now i can hold off on the 1000 dollar TV!

Summary: Good player, doesn't play dvd-r well.
Review: I tried this player and it seems to work with regular disks. I have a few that I have had to backup that work find in other DVD players. The problem I had is with the volume. I have tried every setting and still have a problem with volume coming out half as loud as it should.

Summary: DVD Audio at an affordable price
Review: I'll keep it short. If you would like to hear the highest resolution audio available today this unit will do it for you. It also functions perfectly well as a regular DVD player.

Summary: great picture, sound price. lacks some basics
Review: I'll let others tell you how good it is. My complaint is this. If you turn off the dvd player before you finish watching a movie the player has to start the movie from the begining when you turn the player on to resume the movie. My older Sony could even remember where I left off on a disk I watched months ago. Now that was cool, the ability to resume from location even after putting in different disks!

Summary: Great product, unfairly slandered by morons
Review: I've had this player now for about 4 months, and it's been great so far. Very clear, accurate color, and fast response. Layout of the remote is a little wonky in some respects, but i've come to expect this as commonplace with most players.

Seeing the negatives some people are mentioning, however, I feel compelled to defend this player, as it's getting a lower rating than it truly deserves - largely due to ignorance.

First, concerning the "booby trap" issue. It's not a trap, it's progressive scan. If you don't have an HDTV, PS isn't going to do much for you anyway! If you try to set the player as PS, and your television can't handle it, of course your display is going to bug out for a bit. If you check the manual, however, this "trap" is mentioned, and it's resulting fix to reset the settings. People are saying "good luck" like Toshiba is to blame for this, when it's simply the result of people hitting buttons and selecting options that they don't know anything about.

As for the time/chapter display, this is shown on the front panel of the unit - just like virtually *any* player out there. The reason you can't simply pause the player for hours and leave it in the same spot is more a matter of liability control on the part of Toshiba - doing this is BAD FOR YOUR PLAYER. It's bad for any disc-based drive.

To finish this up, this is a great product that displays audiophile quality in *certain* areas. It has it's warts, such as the remote, but has been almost perfect throughout my experience with it. If you know how to operate a DVD player without selecting stupid options and mistreating the unit, this one is great for you.

If you're the type of fool who fries their previous DVD player, complains about not being able to read the front panel properly, or can't figure out how to display the remaining time on a disc, then by all means...stay far, far away. From all electronics.
