Rating: Summary: Excellent value Review: This is my second DVD player and big jump over my first (which I purchased two years ago). It is smaller, loads much more quickly, and seems to produce a much better picture. I also love the 1.5x mode, which allows you to watch a movie on "fast time" and/or race through the slower parts. I am very happy with this and for the price it's hard to imagine a better deal.
Rating: Summary: has the stuttering really been fixed?? Review: i am interested in buying this, and wonder if the stutter really is a problem and, if so, has it really been fixed? how can an "upgrade disc" fix it? how do i know if the one i buy suffers from the problem? fwiw, for now i plan on using this in 480i mode, on a 32 panny tau flat screen non-hdtvthanks
Rating: Summary: It WAS the player.... Review: Yes, it was a problem with the N50. It would happen with all different output modes, and would come up almost on cue when I fast-forwarded through a section. I recently returned the JVC and bougt a Pioneer DV-563AS, and have had no such issues with the same movies in any player mode, progressive or not. This is a problem that JVC shoull adress, as it is a shame that an affordable player such as the XVN series with so many good features suffers fro this. Here is a review site (CNET) that talks about the problem on the silver (XVN-55SL) player. http://reviews.cnet.com/JVC_XV_N55SL/4505-6473_7-30459924.html?tag=pdtl-list Skip this one and go for either the Panasonic S55S or the above-mentioned Pioneer (unfortunately, both only available in silver).
Rating: Summary: Stuttering Problem? Review: I have the XV-N40bk and had a similar stuttering problem during fast pans. I believe this is caused by the 'picture source' option setting. Try adjusting these settings. (IE On DVDs of video taped programing, set to 'video-active' and if it's a film, set to 'film' mode.) Like the XV-N40, I believe this player plays PAL discs (region 0) as well as NTSC. This is a great feature.
Rating: Summary: Heed Jeb6Kids advice! Review: I am experiencing the excact same 'stuttering' sproblem as Jeb6Kids below. I do the excact same drill, and it comes back unless I turn the player off completely. The picture (through component-to-HDTV) is quite nice, as is the sound, but this stuttering is intolerable. I'm returning it tomorrow and might give the Panasonic 55 a try.
Rating: Summary: Plays everything but stutters sometimes Review: I bought this player because I was so satisfied with other JVC products (like my TV). The unit has played all the DVDs I threw at it and without any hesitation loading (my old player had a lot of trouble loading). But then I noticed that during pans and fast action that it appeared as though the image was stuttering... If I stop the player and press play again right away the stuttering goes away for 30 to 90 seconds before it comes back- very ugly 8-(. I don't care about features when the play quality is this bad.
Rating: Summary: No coax connector ! Review: Some marketing genius at JVC decided to ignore 90% of the TV sets out there and not include a coax connector; this costed me a trip to RadioShack and $32 for a modulator; it would have costed them probably no more than $2; Also this fact is not mentioned in the tech description! I hope this rating will discourage cheap strategies like this.
Rating: Summary: Nice features Review: Upgraded to this one based on reviews on Amazon. Good player. Very good features. Plays everything.
Rating: Summary: Clean Start Review: My first DVD player, and a real pleasure. Silky operation, extremely easy setup (rational menus!!), and - especially - a very elegant user interface. Icons and status text are unobtrusive but clear, and don't get in the way of the movie experience. Having used a wide array of other DVD players, this is a huge relief - no alphabet-block, screen-filling GUIs! I'm using this player with a veteran 21" Toshiba set with no very sophisticated features, but the JVC seems prepped for the wide-screen set I'll someday get. Rock solid play - no skips and blips. Though I'm still exploring all its options, so far it's a genuine delight.
Rating: Summary: No issues... I guess the other reviewer had bad luck! Review: I guess we sometimes are lucky and sometimes not. Wanting a nice silver progressive scan DVD, I was debating between a Panasonic and this one, but the nice experience prevailed and, having happily owned a JVC stereo system a few years ago, I settled for this DVD player. So far, I have not had any complaints, plus it's very easy to use and it looks very slick in our living room. For the low cost, I would highly encourage even those customers considering the REALLY cheap options to pick this one up instead. You will be find it a rewarding and affordable option to fulfill your DVD playing needs.
