Summary: Screen did not last for 1 movie. Junk!
Review: I purchased the unit to entertain 3 young boys on a 7-hour ride in a minivan. After about an hour of play (the 1st hour of use) the screen started to scroll vertical lines. It would start to play again after powering it off and back on. It kept getting worse until it would not play for more than a few minutes. I purchased the unit on Traget.com and called a Target store while on vacation hoping to exchange the unit...no go. Target.com and Target stores are separate entities and do not play nice together. I was hoping to make an exchange since the identical unit is on the shelf at the Target store and I had my receipt. I am now still on vacation looking at a 7-hour return trip and shopping to replace the (junk) unit at other retailers where I can return it in any city. I already printed off the return label from Target.com and will not be ordering from them again. I will also stick to Sony, which is a known high quality manufacturer. Spend the extra money on a name brand. Buyers be warned...

Summary: Great price BAD player
Review: I purchased this DVD player after reading the reviews for this and several other players. It was great plugged into the outlet at home the first time we used it. The sound and picture are wonderful. BUT, the car adaptor did not fit our vehicle (Subaru Outback). We charged the battery according to the instructions and had no more than 1.5 hours of play time in the car. We purchased a different car adaptor to try and salvage our investment. Although the adaptor worked, the DVD player didn't. The picture just froze. No indication of low battery, nothing. The DVD continued to spin. We turned everything off and restarted after several minutes. When we did this, there was a blue screen with "loading" in the upper left corner. It didn't go away. I cannot recommend this DVD player.

Please note, the Mintek manufacturer also puts other names on the same player, so check them in the store to be sure you aren't getting another with the same problems.

Summary: Holds up to my 4 year old's abuse.
Review: I was a bit worried at first about buying this product after reading some of the negative feedback, but to ease my worries, I also bought a replacement plan from Target, in case it did break or quit working (3 years for $19.99 was worth it to me).

I've had it about a month and it's been used every day, either by my daughter or myself. This is a day in the life of my dvd player:

Get carried out to the car, strapped in the holster, get DVD changed 3 times, get stuck under the seat for 30 minutes while people go shopping, get put back in holster, 2 more DVD changes, get kicked by kid a few times, put back under seat, hoster again, thrown in shopping bags and taken inside. Sit in kids lap, change DVD a few more times, get thrown aside, wait 10 minutes, back in kids lap, have all my buttons pushed at once, change the DVD again, fall off couch, back in kids lap, get left on when kid goes to bed.

After all of that almost every day for over a month, it's still working FINE. It's durable, has a great picture, all the hidge mechanisms are holding up great, the volume can get loud enough (tho i haven't tried it on a plane yet, that will be the next test).

People complain that there's no volume control on the remote, but with a 7 inch screen, you can only sit back so far and still see it, so reaching out to adjust the volume shouldn't be that difficult. I've hardly even used the remote, really more out of curiousity of the functions more than necessity.

All in all, it's holding up beautifully to all my 4 year old puts it thru and I feel very confident it will last quite awhile. If you're worried, just pay the extra $20 and get the replacement plan from Target, then you've got nothing to lose. (if the unit doesn't perform, they send you a gift card for the purchase price, which you can use towards a different DVD player if you weren't happy with this one).

Summary: Don't waste your time!
Review: I'm on my second unit and it freezes playing when in the middle of a movie. Brand new unit out of the box. Second unit does the same as first. The whole Mintek product thing must be a scam. This one is less than 24 hours old and 15 minutes into the first dvd the same thing happened. It's going back to the store. I'm sorry that I was sucked into the cheap price and great features. TOO BAD IT SIMPLY DOESN'T WORK!

I'd rate it a zero but that option isn't available! [...]

Summary: Three to Five?
Review: Ms. Smorowski, who rated this player as a 1 star (seemingly because 0 star was unavailable), is very hostile about this machine. She advises the potential buyer to look to the good v bad reviews, and states that the good ones are new owners. How this is terribly pertinent, I am unsure. If the player is "a piece of trash" as it was called in a review, I would think it would be evident fairly quickly.

Also, there are 8 reviews, total. Five of the reviews are quite positive, enthusiastic even. Only 3 are negative, and one of those reviewers admits the picture and sound are great. For that the player earns 1 star? Those are very exacting standards.

This is a wonderful forum, for it allows people to express opinions about merchandise, alledgedly to assist potential buyers. Perhaps, however, I am alone in this feeling, but venomous, over-the-top negative reviews raises questions in my mind. Basically, I think the reviewer must have an agenda, an axe to grind, or is too demanding. I also cannot help but ask myself if the problems that cropped up "later" might have been reviewer-caused. Nothing makes a person angrier than doing something to harm a machine, try to enforce a warranty, and be told it was user error. Of course, I am speculating about the personal red flags such reviews raise. I could be completely mistaken; or, I could be right. Who knows? However, with a Positive 5 v 3 Negative reviews, I see no reason to change my thinking.

Summary: Great picture ...BUT
Review: Purchased the mintek last year for Christmas...worked great for awhile but after six months the picture disappeared...no picture, just sound...take in for repairs and was told that was a common problem with Mintek and that it would be more to fix the player than to buy a new one...I am purchasing a new player but defintely not a Mintek!!

Summary: 3rd times a charm
Review: This has to be the worst DVD player on the market. I'm on my third player. The first two players just stopped playing DVD's out of nowhere. I've had the 3rd one for two days now. Would have gotten my money back on the first one, but I had already thrown out the packing material and could not get a refund. So I just by a new one and put the defective one in the box and return it, hoping the new one will work. I originaly purchased it because of the many features and the low price, but it has not been worth the trouble. Maybe this third player will be the one!

Summary: DON'T BUY THIS BRAND!!!
Review: This is definently a waste of $250. Even though the picture and sound are great, the player only plays very very few DVD's uninterrupted. It just stops in the middle of a movie and when you take the disc out and clean it, it still skips in the same spot. If you are a first time buyer and are looking for a cheap, good quality portable DVD player, DO NOT waste your money on a Mintek.
