Summary: Choke, A great documentry on professional fighters
Review: Choke is a great documentry about professional fighters, The fights themselves and the preparation that goes into the fights as well as training techniques that Rickson Gracie uses and an insight into Gracie jiu-jitsu as well as making you understand what a fighter goes through when he wins and when he loses, Overall a great video to purchase if you enjoy fighting and other contact sports, 5 out of 5.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Not just another boring documentary
Review: Choke was 1/2 MMA tournament, and 1/2 behind the scenes documentary. This dvd follows Gracie, Todd Hayes (kickboxer), and an asian wrestler who's in the tournament for the 1st time. After watching Gracie's training rituals, there's no way these 'mortal' fighters would ever have a chance of beating him. Although, Gracie finds himself caught in a front choke during the middle part of the tournament. Hmm..

The only downside with this dvd is the competition. Perhaps some big name Pride or even UFC fighters would have made for more intriguing fights.

Summary: Must Watch Movie if you are a UFC/Pride/MMA Fan
Review: Definitely a must movie to have in your library. Sure, Rickson challenges relatively unknown opponents; however, the movie is not so much about the other fighters as it is about Rickson, his family and his training/personal lifestyle. Certainly an enjoyable film and interesting from the public's point of view and runs about 90+ minutes. If you can spare the $..., then go ahead and purchase this DVD.

Summary: Excellent Rickson Vale Tudo '95 Documentary
Review: First off, I am NOT a Rickson Gracie fan. However, I am a Mixed Martial Arts fan, and I found this documentary well put together and interesting. The only real complaint I have is that it would have been nice to see Rickson's techniques used against more experienced fighters. The beginning of the disc is about Rickson's training and his lifestyle. The last half is about the Vale Tudo Tournament of '95 held in Tokyo, Japan. Eight fighters including Rickson enter the single elimination tournament and fight matches until one fighter is remaining. There is not a lot of fighting, but it is great to see behind the scenes what goes on in the locker room while the fighters are waiting for their next match and what their opinions are before and after the fights.

Summary: Some interesting footage, but superficial and sloppy overall
Review: I found Choke interesting to watch simply because of the subject matter, but this is a pretty crappy movie. It is shot and edited in a way that is usually bland and sometimes sloppy, and the transitions from segment to segment are unnatural and forced. After the pre-fight part of the movie ends, it basicaly stops being a documentary and becomes a sub-par, semi-abridged recap of Vale Tudo Japan 1995, complete with a cast of 7 very inexperienced fighters and many boring between-fight scenes of Rickson bossing his underlings around and complaining about massages that are too hard and towels that are too wet. Throughout the whole movie, Rickson gets set on a pedestal so that I couldn't sympathize with him or get into his head. I found that I was actually becoming much more invested in the fates of Koichiro Kimura and Todd Hayes (two of the aforementioned inexperienced fighters), because they get more of a natural treatment and less of a glorification. There are a few parts in the beginning where the film uses a narrator, which seemed really clumsy since he's only heard 3 or 4 times before he disappears from the movie. And on top of that, he's a crappy narrator. He was probably just one of the post-production guys, and not a separate person hired for narration.

I guess the thing that saves the movie from complete worthlessness is that the actual footage used is still a little bit interesting to see if you're a fan of the sport, even though it was assembled poorly. But I'd never recommend the movie to anyone who's not specifically interested in Vale Tudo Japan or Rickson Gracie. As a film, it's unsuccessful.

So if you want to see some footage of Rickson Gracie training, philosophizing, talking about how great Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is and choking out some tomato cans, check this movie out. If you're looking for either a good MMA documentary or just a good film experience in general, check out The Smashing Machine, a documentary on Mark Kerr that is better than this movie in every way imaginable.

Summary: Great Documentery on an Incredible Warrior
Review: I loved this documentary! It was so well done and the way you get to listen to Rickson speak about his philosohpy of fighting is incredible. Do yourself a favor and get this video, it not just about the fights, but what goes on before, during and after the tournaments. Very cool footage of rural Japan and an inside look at the mind of Rickson Gracie, arguably the most complete No Holds Barred fighter in the world.

Summary: It is all about the ART
Review: I loved this movie cause it shows that dedication and love for ones passion is a one way ticket to the top. Rickson gives his philosophy of life not just fighting. He is unbeatable in my book. He is the Bruce Lee of today. No one can beat him in freestyle fighting, who is tuffer than him? Check it out. made me want to learn to control my breath. the reason i gave it 4 stars and not 5 is because there is some down time when the other fighters are being shown. but well worth seeing this man do his thing.
