Rating: Summary: An almost "0" Review: This could have been awsome!, but nooooo! Whats wrong? well 1st,if you are going to tell us about the telescope, do it in a seperate segment, where we can see the Hubble scope and how it works and how it was put in orbit, TELL US WHAT WE ARE LOOKING AT!, as much as possible. 2nd, this cry baby elevator music, God it's awful!, Look, the universe is NOT a peaceful place, there are violent births and deaths taking place,"side by side", if the big bang theory is correct, it's VIOLENT folks! give us music that reflects that, and 3rd, is this a NASA robot reading this?, please get someone with some LIFE in their voice! I have never been so disappointed in a DVD that I had hope to get so much out of.
Rating: Summary: Great DVD! Review: This DVD is great! I expected less, but it was exactly what I was looking for! Just a bunch of great pictures and great music to go with them. The feature where you can turn on/off the audio narration and the subtitles is great! This way you can either learn a little about the pictures, or just relax. I liked it so much that I instantly bought Part 2! Good stuff!
Rating: Summary: Fascinating and Beautiful Review: This is a beautiful pictorial of Hubble photos of the Universe, accompanied by lovely music. Very good for meditation as one considers the incomprehensible immensity and mystery of the universe from the perspective of his location on this spatially negligible (except to us) tiny but beautiful planet Earth ("that bright blue loveliness in the eternal silence where it floats" to quote Archibald MacLeash (sp)). Hopefully our irresponsible species (3 billion humans in 1960, doubled to over 6 billion today straining the planet's resources, devestating its ecosystem, with over 9 billion humans conservatively projected by 2150) will survive long enough to in a few hundred years get a ways out there into the cosmos. Rating: Summary: Soft on science, Eyecandy Review: This is a beautifully photographed DVD, with an excellent ambient music score that makes it a favorite to leave on the home theater when we have a party. You can just watch the spectacular photographs and listen to the music, or you can listen to the narration or watch it closed-captioned. The music is beautiful and well-suited to the magnificent photographs chosen. However, I wish the narrative would have covered a little more astronomical detail about the pictures. For example, we are looking at many objects that amateur astonomers will never see, but they are behind or near familiar stellar objects. Providing such context and a little more hard-science, a la Nova, would have made this one of the greatest DVDs in my collection. Even so, watching it is relaxing and inspirational. A DVD similar to this, except based on more familiar objects in the night sky would make a great astronomy teaching tool.
Rating: Summary: Don't listen to the positive reviews-They are misleading. Review: This is an expensive slide show with music. No voice or video just an option for onscreen narration you have to read. The music is nothing special, quite boring. The screen saver won't install and gives an error during the move data process. The web site does not have support. If you try and download the screensaver from the web site you get a bad link. So if you get a bad DVD like mine don't count on being able to use the screen saver.
Rating: Summary: perfect soundtrack Review: This outstanding view of life beyond can only be enhanced by the addition of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" or Alan Parson's " I Robot" on soundtrack. Since neither band is available on DVD, I match up either one of these albums {CD's} with this incredible eye candy and I'm almost there. Try it...you'll see..
Rating: Summary: No poet present. Review: This video gave me a lot of great pictures from Hubble. It was just what I expected--picture-wise. However, the first half (about) of the spoken narrative is mind-bogglingly out of place and inappropriate. When the DVD opens, we see a fantastic presentation of the universe in a series of truly wondrous hubble shots and we are longing to understand what we are seeing--hopefully expressed with just a bit of poetic language fitting the visions. What we get as a narrative accompanying this magical vista is a dull, technical and totally inappropriate treatise on Hubble history. This video isn't about Hubble, Dummy, it's about the stars!! Later on in the video the narrator finally turns his attention to what we're seeing on the screen and it's very fine from there on. Whoever designed and approved the narrative accompanying the first part of this DVD was not mentally connected to the main thrust of the wondrous video--the glorious and magical cosmos exposed. In spite of this major failure, I'm glad I have this DVD tucked away in my rack. (Suggestion. Turn off the narrative until (about halfway along) it begins to discuss what you're seeing. Cheers. Don.
Rating: Summary: read below Review: With high expectations after watching various Discovery Channel shows, I rented this DVD to get the feel of traveling through space. Disappointed, I was when I began viewing this DVD. These are photographs that Hubble has taken that some took a camera to. The perspective is tight, so one does not understand what they are looking at nor is there any narrative. One picture after another, the camera panning the surface with a classical soundtrack. I have seen some of these pictures on www.space.com Unless you are a Cosmologist, you will most likely not find this appealing.
