Rating: Summary: Culture of fear is real! Review: This is an excellent film. It needs to be seen by as many people possible and hopefully some lessons will be learned. A MUST See. Can't wait for the next Michael Moore feature.
Rating: Summary: Bowling for Columbine is amazing Review: To anyone considering buying this movie, I highly recommend it. The movie tries to get to the root of why the United States has by far the highest number of gun deaths in the world. I thought there would be more coverage of the Columbine tragedy itself, but it only provides the backdrop for this documentary. He shows shooting scenes recorded by the school security camera system and interviews students who were there. But this was not the focus of the entire movie. Moore goes on to try to find out why the tragedy happened. Michael Moore exposes the town of Columbine for what it really is - dull, "painfully normal" suburbia. Manson is shown in the movie, but the movie certainly isn't about the rocker. The reason he is shown is to try to find out why people blame him for the problem of violence in this country. The point that Michael Moore is getting at is that Manson's music is listened to by people all over the world. However, countries such as Germany, the UK, and Canada do not have the same rate of gun violence, but do listen to the same music, watch the same movies, and play the same video games. So why is violence so high in the US? Michael Moore explores this, and brings forth a variety of ideas, including race, a culture of fear, and a country that looks down on others. The United States is the only country in the Western world that still has the death penalty. The US also has no national healthcare system. A Social Darwinist nation. What does this say about us? At one point, Moore crosses into Ontario from Michigan to compare attitudes between Americans and Canadian teens. He found a group of Canadian teens skipping school outside a local Taco Bell. Although you might expect lackluster American high school students to say something negative about their fellow man, these Canadian teens stated that in Canada, one doesn't settle arguments by resorting to guns. Although people still have disagreements and not like each other, they might fire insults, but not bullets. He goes to Toronto and discovers that it is typical for Canadians to simply leave their front doors unlocked. This is not to say there is no crime in Canada, but people are more trusting of others. This is one of the best points in the movie. Moore certainly took a unorthodox approach in making this movie, for instance at one point he heckles Dick Clark, bulldozes Charleton Heston at Heston's own estate, and even sarcastically questions a LA police officer about why the police go after petty criminals in South LA instead of going after air pollution, which he claims causes much more suffering than a few desperate people in the ghetto. As for why the movie was named "Bowling for Columbine," you will find out at the very end, with Moore's closing thought, which I don't want to spoil!
Rating: Summary: Truly Amazing Review: For all of the balderdash that was made after Michael Moore's comments at the Oscar's(which are becomming more and more relevent as each day moves on)the fact that this is a truly amazing movie seemed to have almost been forgotten. While Moore's methods of research and questioning are somewhat suspect, his heart seems to be in the right place. And this is what allows this movie to become truly amazing. It has emotion that most other documentaries lack, and because Moore is unafraid to offend people, it makes this truly spectacular. The idiocy that Heston exhibits in this movie makes it worth the purchase price alone. Agree or disagree with what Moore has to say, you will still find this documentary entertaining and ultimately touching.
Rating: Summary: Dont trust reviews on this site about this movie. Review: This is a very controversial movie. So people giving it 1 star are probably against it. Dont trust them, buy what you want ,when you want.
Rating: Summary: Why do people say it's about gun control? Review: I think it's interesting how people who see this movie come out saying that it's about gun control. It's interesting because they didn't watch the movie, they simply tuned it out due to their ridiculous misconceptions (and since Moore isn't too popular, they probably had to go out of their way to even see this film). I will agree that the issue of gun control was confronted as one of the many possible reasons for violence in this country. Ultimately, though, Moore shows this to be highly unlikely. Yes, Moore himself argues against guns being the reason for so much violence in this country. Micheal Moore is a genius and he presents his arguments in a valid fashion. Not only is this movie informative, but it may well be one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time.
Rating: Summary: Bowling for left wing bleeding hearts Review: "By the end of BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE, my overall sense is that Moore is obviously a bleeding heart liberal of the most dangerous kind. Clever, manipulative, a "guilty" white apologist who fails to look at the big picture (pardon the pun) in order to expound his disjointed theories as to why more people in the United States die by gunfire each year than in any other country. Moore plays fast and loose with some of his facts, which sure makes for an interesting two hours, but again, his cynicism and combative tactics (veiled by an obsequiously polite demeanor) wear a little thin. A sticker on the DVD suggests that Moore's now infamous Oscar speech is contained in the disc -- which it is -- recited three weeks later by Moore sitting at a picnic bench -- but don't look for the actual footage, since the Academy would not allow Moore to exploit the footage in order to help him sell a few DVD's. In other words, don't be duped again -- this time by the disc packaging. That brings to mind another spin that Moore the revisionist attempts to inject on the matter of the Oscar debacle. Now this is entertaining fiction. Moore claims that he was first booed for inviting the other contenders for the Best Documentary Oscar up on stage with him. That's his conjecture, at least. Then he says that at first, he was cheered when he began his acceptance speech, and that those who were booing were not booing him but rather they were booing those who were cheering. When the boos intensified, it isn't because they were booing him but rather those who had been cheering were now booing back at the audience members booing them. In other words, at no time other than perhaps the first few seconds he hit the stage, where the audience members booing him, but rather, they were booing each other. This clearly illustrates the way Moore thinks, and the spin he puts on his beliefs in order to sway others to his misguided way of thinking. While Michael Moore will gladly show you statistics of all the human beings killed as the result of political reprisals hinged on American policy (and he certainly does in this film), he will never show you the millions upon millions of lives saved around the globe, thanks to America's involvement in fighting terrorism, aiding allies and rebuilding nations in desperate need of assistance. In short, he's all to happy to show you everything wrong with America, but he'll never show you what's right with it, either. And for that reason, I cannot in good conscience, recommend the purchase or rental of this disc, as doing so will only encourage those who allow Moore to spread his propaganda and sew the seeds of further hatred and violence directed at the United States of America. Osama bin Laden couldn't have hoped for a stronger ally than Michael Moore. I urge you to leave it on the shelf, gathering dust". **quotes taken in part from a Review in part from Jim McNeal of The Big Picture.
Rating: Summary: MOORE THROWS MANY GUTTERBALLS Review: When Michael Moore isn't proposing exorbitant tax rates he is espousing "gun control". Indeed Moore and his cronies like Rosie O'Donnell would like to see all firearms removed from American households. He wonders why there are so many murders in the U.S. and surmises that it must be because we all own guns. The main target of his misguided diatribe is the National Rifle Association, a long venerated organization with several million members. Moore has a convenient memory. Guns have been owned and enjoyed by our citizens for hundreds of years without significant problems. It is only in the last thirty years or so that the murder rates and indeed many other crimes have steadily increased. During that thirty years liberals have denigrated solid ideas like responsibility, morality, hard work, and love of God and country. They replaced the above with secularist tenets like narcissism, welfare, illegitimacy, irresponsibility, laziness, and a general loathing for all things decent. They have elevated anti-God organizations like the ACLU and People For The American Way. Small wonder criminality is on the rise. Rampant crime has nothing to do with public ownership of guns. It has everything to do with a liberalized society which has relegated propriety to the dustbin and it is this which must be addressed. Moore would put a bandaid on a festering wound. If his ideas ever take hold, better hide your steak knives.
Rating: Summary: Mike strikes again Review: ... This movie was an eye opener to the tragedies going on in the world that many people have been ignoring or have been uninformed about. This movie is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I recommend it to everybody who feels like accepting the truth.
Rating: Summary: Too bad he embelishes and alters Review: So Michael Moore wants to do a left-biased show about gun control. Would have been better had he not altered a few facts and done some horrendous editing of Heston's speeches.
Rating: Summary: A Documentary that only Michael Moore could make Review: Only somebody like Michael Moore could tackle the subject of gun violence in America in a documentary like this. It features humor, heartbreak, tragedy and ultimately insight regarding the gun violence epidemic we face in America. The movie does not go after the gun industry or the "gun rights" lobbyists (which would both be fairly easy targets...pardon the pun), but instead Moore goes looking for the answers to WHY we have such a gun culture and gun violence problem in the U.S. In Moore's typical style, he can often go over the top (or off the rails completely) with his antics, but in the end the film identifies and addresses some of the important parts of the puzzle in regard to the American gun culture and our gun violence problems. I highly recommend this film to anybody that is interested in this subject, or for fans of Michael Moore in general. This is definitely his best film yet.
