Description:

This DVD about the legendary clans of Scotland begins with an informative segment on the battle of Culloden in 1746, a critical event in which the once-powerful clans were defeated by English troops. An explanation of the general nature of Scottish clans and their importance in the country's history provides a good background before a number of short segments are presented on individual families. The narrator of the film tells brief historical anecdotes about each featured clan, which includes Anderson, Armstrong, Buchanan, Cameron, MacGregor, Stewart, and Wallace (with William Wallace of Braveheart fame). Accompanying the narration are beautiful shots of Scottish scenery, so the presentation is a visual treat. But the approach of focusing on clans individually means that while the various stories about each clan may be interesting, there is no real cohesion to the entire production. And while the production may be interesting to those curious about Scottish lore, it's by no means a definitive work on the subject of the clans. A bonus program on the DVD, "Scottish Verse," features readings of well-known poems by such authors as Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Sir Walter Scott to the accompaniment of scenic footage of Scotland, some of which includes actors portraying characters in the poems. --Robert J. McNamara
