Review: A fishing show for people who don't like fishing shows. This disc contains all six episodes of the show FISHING WITH JOHN and a bonus video of the song "Big Heart" by The Lounge Lizards. This show follows the basic fishing show format -- a host and a guest going fishing -- but manage to go off in a completely different direction. John Lurie's guests in these episodes are: Jim Jarmusch, Tom Waits, Matt Dillon, William Defoe and Dennis Hopper. The shows themselves are fascinating and the alternative audio commentary track with John Lurie is interesting and fun. Any fans of the works of any of the people mentioned above (or just alternative film in general) should find these shows very enjoyable. Fans of normal fishing shows (especially ones without a sense of humor) may want to stay away!

Review: Advanced Comedy for those not amused by anything in the theatres. If you do not like your comedy spoonfed to you or you don't enjoy being clubbed over the head with comedy, this is for you! I grew up watching fishing shows with my father and I always hated them. John Lurie has taken something I despised and made me laugh out loud many times watching it. The Commentary by Lurie is a blast as well!

Summary: a new perspective on fish, life, and everything in between
Review: Awkward, and at times uncomfortable, John Lurie invites the viewer to accompony him and some rather amazing film and music stars on his extreme fishing trips. While going completely off target, and abandoning all sense of reality, Lurie manages to leave everthing behind except what is fundimentally important in life (whether you're Dennis Hopper, Tom Waits, or nobody in particular), and that is: well, i'm still not quite sure. Whatever it is, John Lurie has somehow caputered in these episodes...

Review: by far the best miniseries on television. john's attempts at "fishing" often leave me wondering if his guests knew he had no idea how to fish, or if they're just playing along. tom waits seems to get genuinely (angry) at one point, and then i think he gets it. watching this show made me start watching fishing shows on tv (bass masters, etc.), i never really thought about it, but there's some great dialogue there. while waiting to catch a fish, they often talk about everything from the meaning of life, to trouble in the homefront (i.e. "looks like i'll be couch-ridden again"). so, um, buy it!

Summary: Easily the oddest DVD in my collection...
Review: Count me as pleasantly surprised, and I'd already had high expectations. I was expecting a low-key treat listening to some of my favorites ramble on while failing to catch fish. While there's plenty of that, Lurie adds his own odd flavors, especially the deadpan announcer. (Example: Lurie and Jarmusch swap rods at one point while the announcer proclaims 'This is a *very* dangerous maneuver.') See Tom Waits seasick and annoyed! See Dennis Hopper get on Lurie's nerves! All this and audio commentary too...

Review: Fishing, in general, is dull, which makes it a bad premise for anything. Nowhere in the Amazon.com review do the words funny, laugh, amusing, or good appear. The review describes it excellently, "imagine a talk show defined by its contemplative silences." What does that mean? It means don't watch this.

Summary: Can I Have a Bite of Your Sandwhich?
Review: For some people, simply being able to see Tom Waits get sea sick and crabby is reason enough to buy this Criterion disk. Others may need more colorful reasons, and thanks to Criterion and some great on location shots, they get it quite literally. The picture quality on this disk is crisp and clean, showing the powerful landscapes and skylines of the various locations. With the added bonus of some rather interesting travel companions, an hysterical commentator, and great audio tracks by the director this is a must buy for anyone looking for something out of the ordinary for their home library.
