Description:
During his wife's pregnancy, Gordon Churchwell went from apprehensive ambivalence to sympathetic vomiting. The experience inspired him to research the relationship between pregnancy and men's lives and to write a book on the subject. Here he humorously dramatizes his experience, interviews friends and experts, and wears an "empathy belly" for a day, all in the name of exploring the effects of a woman's pregnancy on the father-to-be. To keep with the structure of his book (first published as Expecting: One Man's Uncensored Memoir of Pregnancy and later as Pregnant Man: How Nature Makes Fathers out of Men), Churchwell and his wife sometimes act as though she is currently pregnant, while other times acknowledge that this event actually occurred three years prior--making for some awkward transitions. To make his experience more universal, Churchwell incorporates the experiences of other men, which results in a lot of joshing at the group's Manhattan diner (the same one frequented by the Seinfeld quartet) and some touching moments during the obstetrician visit of one friend and the delivery of another friend's baby. Churchwell does a fine job of balancing science, sincerity, and sly wit, making for an informational and entertaining 49 minutes. --Kimberly Heinrichs
