Summary: GLORIOUS! ABSOLUTELY GLORIOUS!!!
Review: I have had the great fortune of seeing this movie 5 different times at 2 different IMAX Theaters (Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT; Air & Space Museum in Washington D.C)... Each time I saw it, I fell more and more in love with SPACE... If you can imagine this: you are in a theater where the screen is basically ***60 FEET TALL x 80 FEET WIDE ACROSS***! You swear that *YOU ARE THE ASTRONAUTS*!!! One of the very first scenes in the movie is a Fire Drill: you are on the Launch Tower (attached to the Shuttle), and you get into a cage which is attached to a cable which goes a distance, and slams into a rope net... This screen is just so big, that when you crash into the net, ***YOUR BODY ACTUALLY MOVES WITH THE IMPACT***!!! The fact that when they are however high above the Earth's atmosphere that they fly, they get to see a sunrise ***EVERY 90 MINUTES***!!! I AM SO VERY JEALOUS!!! (Too Short to be an Astronaut this Life-time! DARN!!) Picture this: You are flying above the Earth. You see the Earth, and its horizon. Space is black. All of a sudden, you see a small line of white. It grows bigger. You see a slight blob, which shortly turns out to be the Sun. As the shuttle continues its flight, the Sun bursts into its complete majestic brightness, sunbeams abound! I get goosebumps just THINKING about this scene! For this movie alone, I am going to be investing in a Home Theatre System, with Surround Sound and Everything! I am going to have my own Personal Movie Theatre, and the Bass is going to be BLASTING!!!!!! :0) Of course, its sister movie: BLUE PLANET, is also worth the purchase! :O) In this one, the Time-Elapse Footage of a Lightning storm in Africa is BEYOND SUPER! You are a mere shrub in the African plains with this storm very fast approaching, and you BECOME PART OF THE STORM!

Summary: I cry every time...
Review: I have seen this movie dozens of times in IMAX theaters, and I bought the VHS. I couldn't wait for the DVD. This movie contains amazing imagery, and incredbile footage. Even naysayers cannot help but feel a twang in their heart for the US Space Program. This movie is so beautiful, I cry every time I see it.

Summary: If you buy one film on space, this is the one...
Review: I saw The Dream is Alive when it first appeared in 1985, and was absolutely blown away by both the photography and the music; IMAX was in its infancy then, but the crispness, the color, the imagery, and the thoughtful editing combined to make this a truly unforgettable documentary. It may well be the benchmark for all IMAX productions. The theme is simple: Space is meant to be explored, and we can do it. Thankfully, the producers concentrated on the visuals rather than clouding the images with technotalk. I spent years trying to find both the DVD and the VHS version, and finally -- 15 years later -- found it at the Reuben H. Fleet Space Center in San Diego, where I first saw it. Micky Erbe and Maribeth Solomon produced a most powerful and moving set of musical selections -- TDIA's signature theme has remained with me through the years. Their mix of syhthesized, symphonic and vocal performances are absolutely stunning, and adds a dimension of synergy to the visuals that I feel has been unmatched in any IMAX production since. Every time I watch the film, I am moved by its sheer power and unparalleled splendor. This film reinforces the belief that, in spite of the 1986 and the most recent shuttle tragedies, the dream truly is alive.

Summary: Excellent!
Review: This is an excellent movie. What i liked about it -- the opening sequence of the shuttle landing was pretty good. The calm of southern fla..and then the sonic boom...and then the rapid landing descent with no engines. Gee it comes down pretty quick...and the landing gear pops out at like the last possible minute. ..very suspensful. Well narrated by Walter Cronkite, I find his voice comforting for some reason. And i liked the astronaut -- NASA communications, the silly little things they

say back and forth. And of course the photography throughout was beautiful...I particularly liked the space oribital sunrise, and the narrative of the ancient civilizations in the mediterranean as viewed from space. My wife and kids happened to be out, so i played it very loud, particularly the launches, which sounded pretty good over the sub-woofer. On one launch sequence a geeky white-shirted pocket-protected NASA engineer wiped a tear from his eye after a successful launch...I'm embarassed to say i feel the same way and was wiping a tear from my eye too.

Isaw it was produced by Lockheed-Martin...I suppose the movie's true purpose is a company advertisement rallying public support for space exploration and big contracts. ..an IMAX rendition of a company newsletter.

My only criticism would be that this movie is too short. If you like Apollo 13, or The Right Stuff you will enjoy this beautiful and moving documentary .

Summary: Be Inspired
Review: This is the second or so IMAX film I remember seeing. I think I saw it in 1986, soon after the Challenger disaster, although the film is dated 1985 (Challenger was lost on 28 January 1986.) Remember when they used to show these movies in big inflatable bubble-buildings at the State Fair?

The beautiful scenes of Earth from space, narration by the immortal Walter Cronkite, inspirational music, and scenes with astronauts Resnick and Scobee, later lost with Challenger, make this everything that I think an IMAX movie should be - awe-inspiring, a little patriotic, and flat-out spectacular. This film always brings tears to my eyes and reminds me that the American spirit that made the space program possible can be used to accomplish remarkable things.

Technical note: I expected unbelievably fine image quality from a DVD of an IMAX movie but the master used to make this DVD was not completely pristine. About the same quality as a regular 35mm movie.
