Rating: Summary: A spectacle to behold... Review: This is really the one that started it all. It is the first in the 'Qatsi trilogy and still stands the test of time. While it shows its age in terms of the subjects on film, the film itself steps beyond the time in which it was filmed. With a score by Philip Glass that is somewhat surprising at first, it begins to grow on you until both visual and audio merge and you are entranced. It is a powerful film. I've since seen it performed live with Philip Glass and company while the film played on the big screen and all those little nuances came bursting to life. A quality sound system and a good television screen make all the difference. This one is unique and has a much more 'original' feel than Powaqqatsi and Philip Glass notes in the interviews contained on the DVD that no one was waiting for this one. As Powaqqatsi (and, subsequently, Naqoyqatsi) were follow ups, they were hyped with more expectation. This one is fresh, unique and truly revolutionary. Sit back, open up your mind and take a little trip. It's a great journey.
Rating: Summary: A Miracle of Beauty Come True Review: No words can express the bundle of feelings and emotions that stem from watching every single image and breathing every individual melody from the music score of Koyaanisqatsi. I happened to see it fifteen years ago and it's still in my mind. The film also works as a reflection of our relationship with nature and the way human beings are dramatically changing the planet for the worse. A piece of art worthy to be revisited once again to revive our internal child and look inside ourselves. Please, release it on DVD as soon as possible.
Rating: Summary: What a trip! Review: One of the most mesmerizing, hypnotizing movies I've ever seen. For the first time in my life I never finished my popcorn at the movies! The film had me totally glued to the screen. Go see this one!
Rating: Summary: If there is some sort of movement going on here... Review: ...then I would most definitely like to take part in it. I have been trying for many years to find this movie on video. I rented it at my local video store and BOOM!! not a month later it was gone from the shelf and now I can't even rent it. I was amazed by the movie, it is a finely done piece of moving visual art, something that is a rarity. I had to just go out and tell everyone about it. Mainly though, if you tell someone about it they are like Koyaani....what? And it is funny too, there is the Madonna video "Ray of light", when I first saw that video, the movie entered my mind (but, hey, they were trying to be original, right?) This movie most definitely needs to be re-released.
Rating: Summary: Under-rated by professional reviewers Review: I caught some of this film on Film Four TV in the UK Christmas 1998. Since then I have been trying to find a video copy, in spite of most of the reviews in the film catalogues giving it mixed ratings. By chance I saw that it was showing with a new digital soundtrack at a prestige cinema in London for 7 days, and saw it on 5 August 1999. The cinema was perhaps 20% full! All those empty seats for such a great film. I can only think the reviewers haven't actually seen it and are regurgitating some other review. This is undoubtedly a five star film, even if you don't subscribe to the Hopi sentiments. Maybe the video will now appear.
Rating: Summary: What to do until the video of "Koyaanisqatsi" is re-released Review: The recently released soundtrack CD contains all the music from the film, and when played on one's car stereo makes a powerful accompaniment to your mobile vista of late 20th Century Terra! Embrace the hubris !!!
Rating: Summary: We need this re-released, supposedly this is happening. Review: I have a long history with this film. I was fortunate enough to hear Mr. Reggio introduce and talk about his film in NM back in the 80's. Then I got to hear Phillip Glass perform live, with the film in the background, in Washington DC. I have been absolutely astounded by the film each of the four or five times total I have seen it and have fervently wished to have it on video. I have checked lots of places and have only a few leads to show for it. But last night, 7-26-99, I heard a BBC interview saying that it WAS being re-released. It was infuriatingly short on details, naturally, but hopefully we'll start to see things show up on web searches soon. If you have info, please contact me at thomahal@yahoo.com. I'll post anything I find out here.
Rating: Summary: strangely disturbing, your soul will quiver Review: This is not just a film. It is a whole experience. Words cannot do justice to the combination of desperate images and haunting music. Watch this with your partner in total silence and then tell each other what you feel. Without doubt a unique endeavour
