Summary: One of the best films I have ever seen.
Review: I have seen the film in the cinema with a live orchestra. It were all players who worked with philip glass. It was a night hard to forget. Now I want a video copy of the movie, but you can't buy it anywhere.Maybe someone has a copy.

Summary: An incredible film that NEEDS TO BE IN PRINT!
Review: Many years ago I passed up the chance to purchase a copy of KOYAANISQATSI. No money now, I can get it later...well, so I thought. Although seeing this film on video is a far cry from seeing it on the big screen, it is still an extraordinarily powerful and visionary piece of filmmaking. That this marvelous film is not "in print" is in my estimation a crime almost worthy of impeachment. Whoever holds the rights to this motion picture owes it to the viewing public to re-release it. It is too important a film to be kept in the cannister any longer. And now would be the time, with the newly released re-recording of the eerily effective Philip Glass soundtrack. Seeing this movie for the first time fourteen years ago was for me, as a previous reviewer named it, truly "an experience"--one that essentially transcended the very medium it was produced on. My must also express my long overdue thanks and gratitude to Godfrey Reggio, Ron Fricke, Philip Glass, and to producer Francis Ford Coppola. And to anyone who hasn't seen it, watch it if you have the chance. It is an unforgettable film experience.

Summary: An epic use of images to show disintergration of modern life
Review: Along with Glass's music, Reggio's images of the disintergration of modern life is an epic! The unbelievable images, in perfect timing with Glass's hypnotic music, leave the viewer in awe. This film asks the question of whether technology, as it has progressed, is benevelent in the long term. Reggio and Glass's perspective on this question is obvious to those who see the statement they make. The underlying message, which one must take from the viewing of this film is the hard fact that life, especially urban life, has become "out of balance." The director portrays a time when electronic development, production, technology and the pace of people is so fast that we end up missing life all together. For if we continue on this path, we would reach a point where we would cease to be human at all. One of the best films I have ever seen!

Summary: Groundbreaking cinematography-but strident and obvious
Review: For its time, the film was one-of-a-kind. Since then, its images retain their power, but the technique has greatly improved, as has this particular narrative style (Baraka is the best example so far). Reggio, Fricke and Glass have put together a wonderful film, full of life and sharp criticism. Unfortunately, the criticism can be heavyhanded at times, but that doesn't negate the power of the visuals and the music. Personally, I've worn out three video tapes, seen it twice in the theater, once with the Philip Glass Ensemble. Get it if you can!

Summary: A now necessary perspective
Review: I first saw this film many years ago around the time of its original release, and was enthralled with everything about it. The film sort of puts you up into the corner of the room, looking down at what could just as well be society of ants (us!), and alows us to gain a certain type of perspective about the world, and ourselves, which seems to be needed even more these days. I agree with another reviewer; let's have this film distributed again so people can see it, and gain value from it.

Summary: This is not just a movie, its an experience!
Review: Although I haven't seen this film in eight years, I can never forget the splendid blending of image and music. This is not just for environmentalists or Philip Glass enthusiasts. It can be enjoyed by all, including children. I hope that it is released soon in conjunction with the recent re-release of the complete score on audio.

Summary: Haunting, engrossing
Review: I first saw this film on PBS not long after its release. I have the Philip Glass soundtrack on CD; I cannot listen to it without the film's images immediately coming to mind. You don't have to be an environmental activist to fall instantly in love with the rich imagery, from the frenetic speeded-up scenes of urban traffic to the slow motion destruction and breakup of an errant rocket. Will somebody PLEASE start distributing this film again?

Summary: Cogitate to the sight and sound of Koyaanisqatsi!
Review: FAR OUT!! I have just attended a live performance of KOYAANISQATSI at ucla. Mr. Glass and Mr. Reggio gave a pre-concert lecture and I just caught the end of it. The film is something suclifical (out of the ordinary) and I can't wait for its re-release. The sound was spectacular and the imagery was just as intense. Without the music, the images were just that, images. The music alone can stand on itself, if you're stoned enough! OUTSTANDING!

Summary: Thought provoking!
Review: I first saw this movie many years ago on PBS. I was fascinated by the mix of images and music which combined into a strong message about the madness of our present society. Unfortunately, the tape I made that night was loaned out and lost. For years I've tried to find another copy and am delighted to see it will be available again, especially since I was privileged to attend a showing of the movie recently at UCLA with the Phillip Glass Ensemble playing the music live. It was an experience not to be forgotten. So many people I know have seen the movie once and rate it as a must see again. If you are not lucky enough to have a friend with a copy of the movie, buy it as soon as it becomes available.

Summary: Unique, unmistakable, a film to see over and over.
Review: Koyaanisqatsi is still mesmerizing even today, when its innovative imagery has been borrowed into other media.

It's not the kind of "movie" that has a story line with a beginning, a middle and an end. It bears the same kind of relationship to those movies as a Jackson Pollock drip painting does to representational paintings.

The conventional interpretation is that it portrays human life as 'out of balance' with nature, but I think by the time it has shown urban scenes and natural scenes in fast motion and slow motion, it shows that all aspects of life have their own rhythms.
