Rating: Summary: Thanks for the memories Review: The summer of 1982 I missed the chance to see Tron on the large screen something I've always regreted. Seeing this film nearly twenty years later on DVD has only increased my regret. Loved all the actors and the concept. Today, video arcades are rare indeed, but back than it was the place to hang out on a Saturday night. Wish we had a Flynn's in our neighborhood! I to wish Disney would re-master this film and release it to celebrate its 20th anniversary...I won't miss it this time! Anybody know what happened to Cindy Morgan?
Rating: Summary: Still great fun! Review: I remember seeing this when I was much younger in the theater. It is probably one of my favorite movies from my childhood. Seeing it again as an adult, I was slightly disappointed that the acting in many cases was not terribly impressive. Still, there's something to be said for a technology-based movie that can still deliver good fun over a decade after it's release. I have to giggle, though, at all the scenes where the characters are typing commands into their computers, using full sentences. I think I'll try that sometime ("Windows, would you please open my most recent Office document for me?") Anyway, all that aside, I still found it to be a really cool movie.
Rating: Summary: The Beautiful Cousin of the Matrix Review: No doubt you came here because you already like TRON. Well, enought cant be said about this masterpiece by Disney. In fact, I would call it Disney's ONLY modern masterpiece, beating out such sickeningly dated and trendy films as The Lion King. TRON exhibits all of the rare qualities that make a computer film good. 1) Timeless special effects. No Matrix video-game poop here. These effects were done the hard way, using b&w film, color tinting, and blue-screen....NOT a silicon graphics hub and an overpaid monkey. 2) Illustrative plot metaphorically comparing the real world with the non-tangible "virtual world". No, they are not inside the computer physically...really! 3) Computer as villan/hero. See Godzilla. Its a duality...its an undecidable. If this review doesnt convince you, read the others. TRON is not for everyone, however. End of transmission....
Rating: Summary: TRON - GRAPHIC PARADISE Review: I first viewed this movie 18 years ago at the theater. And even as a small child, I was blown away by the marvelous special effects technology. Its obvious that it took a very gifted team to merge beautiful hand painted backdrops with computer animation. unfortunately, at the time, PC computers were only dark experiments and frightful rumors to movie goers. So much of the terminology used in the film was a little hard to understand. Also, "The Return of the Jedi" already had audiences connected elsewhere. The DVD version of this movie is great in that it allows the viewer to appreciate TRON in a time where computers are a part of everyday life. Certain tech terms used are easier to understand by today's standards. And if you're just an action junkie, the selections allow you to get to all those great fighting sequences. Obviously, Disney took a risk in making this picture. And the results are definately stunning. Even if it wasn't appreciated back then, it's surely something to marvel in this day and age.
Rating: Summary: A Definitely Underrated Movie Review: I sincerely don't know why people didn't like this movie. Back in 1982, apparently almost nobody went to see what happened to be a breakthrough in CG imagery. Without TRON, I think the possibilities of having computer-generated effects would have been remote. In spite of having certain flaws, the story of TRON presented some religious matters, like the programs wanting to communicate with their users -as if they were gods. The light-cycle confrontation is one of its kind, with impressive angle shots never before seen on film. Maybe Steven Lisberger's direction seemed a bit slow that the movie felt itself tiresome sometimes, bit it was a good effort. TRON was probably an underrated film. However I consider it a very good movie and, on DVD, even better.
Rating: Summary: Great Movie, Bad DVD Review: The movie is one of my favorite of all time. So just by that it gets 5 stars. But the quality of the movie on the DVD was terrible. It looked just like a VCR to me. Let me know disney when your going to "modernize" the whole movie. I dont wanna buy a 20 year old movie, that looks 20 years old. I could see hair and spots during most of the flick and to me that is just unacceptable. Nice try but put a little effort into the production value. EOL
Rating: Summary: A great movie with milestone special effects Review: When I was a kid, "Tron" was one of my favorite movies. Now that I'm grown, I still like it just as much as I ever did. Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) gets trapped inside a computer game. To get out, he must defeat several computer opponents in games, and he even has to race to get away from them. It's unbelievable how good the special effects were in this movie. It was made in 1982, but they still stand up almost as well now as they did back when it first came out. You'll really see how good the effects are when Mr. Flynn has to outrun his opponents on a futuristic motorcycle through the games' landscapes. Not only are the special effects some of the best ever, the movie doesn't ever get boring and it has good acting from everybody. I recommend anybody to get "Tron," it's an all around perfect movie. It's a movie that never gets old.
Rating: Summary: Understanding VR within a computer Review: The special effects in this movie cannot be compared to what we have today. In 82 it was revolutionary. Today they are ancient history. Regardless of that, the story in this movie makes you travel in another dimension. This a cult classic sci-fi that is a must in a collection. Fantastic movie!
Rating: Summary: Groundbreaking film and excellent nostalgia piece Review: Tron was a movie that was utterly unappreciated in its time, yet this film laid the groundwork for computer integration into filmmaking; for this reason alone, it should be seen so that modern films are appreciated even more - and to show that a decent plot should accompany all eye candy.
This film is also excellent for those of us who grew up in the 1980's and want another breath of our childhoods. This film exemplifies the 80's, from the arcade to the dress to the way in which computers were viewed with an almost religious awe by the uninitiated. The film really captures the mystique of computers before they were brought to the masses as well as all the myriad social feelings about technology during the 80's, both the hope and the fear.
Do yourself a favor and go get this film. You won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: CGI goes back to it's roots... Review: TRON is one of the few live-action Disney films that I like, although it does have a rare, cutesy Disney-esque moment every now and then. And with its pioneering use of computer animation and effects, it was, and still is, one of the most memorable movies from my childhood. It might look dated when compared to the computer fx of later works, but it still impresses. It also reflects the video arcade-craze era that it was made in. It's definitely a must-watch for those days when I feel like making a return to the womb. Well, at least two-thirds of the way there, anyway. The story is somewhat ordinary, the basic "Fight to turn the tables on the antagonist who did the hero wrong", which is a staple in westerns. But the way it's done is extraordinary, with the hero being absorbed into the antagonist's Corporate computer, fighting against his adversaries on the digital plane, and picking up allies to help him out on the way to the final fight. A nice, simple little adventure story made bigger and cooler by its effects. Basically, style over substance... but, happily, not by too much. Although I've owned TRON on VHS, I've discovered that DVD is by far the best format for this feature. A digital format for a mostly digital FX movie-- definitely a hand-in-hand kinda thing. It also has ths best stereo sound too, especially during the light-disc gladiator battles and light-cycle races. VVROOOOM! WHOOOOSH! Heh... that was pretty cool... 'Late!
