Summary: Oh... Wow... like...
Review: In 1968, some time in the Autumn, this movie was shown on BBC1. My Mom and Dad, who were strict Bretheren types, "approved" of the Monkees, but this one only got five minutes, and that was it. Off. My older sister sneaked in later and we watched bits of it with the volume way down.When I came across it in later years (first kid just having arrived), I was totaly in awe. This film is like, a masterpiece, man. Even if you take into account the fact that it must have been conceived under the influence, it is very clever. The whole theme of head is basically the idea of continuity, or rather the issue of continuity. What can you do if you are prepared to view a movie as a series of mere transformations? The whole point is not so much that there isn't a plot, but that the world the Monkees really live in is in fact too complex and confusing to support one. Over and over again they find themselves way out of their depth, pursued, chased, threatened by incomprehensible enemies, sometimes known, sometimes familiar, but never explained much. At times there are moments of tenderness, even real desire and longing, but these are transitory, often followed by more confusion. The music is very good and gives you a very nostaligic feeling about Vietnam and Carole King and all those long ago days. Even Uncle Frank Zappa makes an appearance, albeit under strange circumstances (which I have no doubt he specified in advance). My son (who is now 15 or so) thinks the funniest scene is when Mickey gets angry with the Coke machine in the desert. The humour is clearly a general product of Mickey Dolenze's fevered imagination. The slippage of the real with the unreal is very much in line with the sort of visual and conceptual surrealism that Zappa pursued in his more inspired 60's sessions. The fact that the film director and crew are often featured (or at least appear from time to time, looking their best to be totally cool and just working), and the often unrehearsed feel for some of the scenes (especially the scene after the cafe) gives you a really unusual feeling of being integrated in with the movie. Given the fact that this is one of the most psychedelic and mind twisting movies ever anyway, and especially if you're smoking anything, you'll walk away from this and maybe miss the door and go straight throught the wall. Don't miss this for goodness sake.

Review: This tripped out film is our ultimate fave! Come on, doesn't anyone else see the connection between government and laughing at people? Watch it straight or on LSD but the mirror scene will have you thinking..."there is an I in there, an I as big as my head..." and beware of hoovers, they are in every white house. Basically it boils down to the fact they we know nothing; it all goes full circle and the beginning may arise; they want to tell their story, although there isn't one..we are made of tin and we want MORE!

Review: Motoko says: This movie was #4 on my all-time list until Pi bumped it to #5. The rumor is that Jack Nicholson and the Monkees dropped acid and cooked up the plot for this beautiful piece of art. It makes since-a lot of independant scenes, loosely hooked together. The first time Amy saw it, I had to rewind to the dancing scene again (and again, and again...). I love this movie, it is definetely Sid approved. "The burden of your generation, my young friends, will be in trying to find ways to amuse itself". Very ironic that I'm writing that quote on the internet. A,P.

Summary: LET ME GUESS....THE WRITERS WERE ON ACID???
Review: THIS PSYCHODELIC FLICK HAD ME DIZZY BY THE END. ITS WORTH WATCHING IF YOURE A MONKEES FAN BUT BE PREPARED TO GET LOST BECAUSE THERE IS NO PLOT. THE ENTIRE MOVIE IS COMPLETELY SENSELESS AND LACKS THE TYPICAL "MONKEE HUMOR". OVERALL I LIKED IT AND WILL PROBABLY WATCH IT AGAIN.

Review: I fell in love with the Monkees the minute they hit the TV screen in the mid 60's. I bought all of their albums, and was a loyal audience member for their weekly tv show. (I still know all of the lyrics to every song.) I cried all night long, and continued moping through the entire week when their show was preempted for "Maya". I didn't care if they were a fabricated band -- they could sing, act, had personality, and they were really cute. Their tv show gave every little girl sweet dreams. My father took me to see "Head", unfortunatly, he couldn't find the theater it was showing at in San Francisco. So, sadly, I missed it, untill my husband surprised me with the tape this Mother's Day. Excitedly, I opened the box and watched the video. Yeeaachh! What was it? A political statement or what?! The only good thing about the entire movie was the special effects and graphics. Those were not Monkee songs!!!! The song that Davy sang was, apparantly, the original version of "Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin. Their recent movie made for tv that aired a while back had the same feeling and style as their series. The songs were great!!!!! Too bad "Head" was such a dud!

Summary: Smarter than your average bubblegum
Review: Upon release in 1968, Head must have seemed to serious movie and music audiences then what a Backstreet Boys movie would seem to us now. But what most didnt realize was that the Monkees were completely aware of the ludicrousness of their situation and were able to poke fun at themselves and their images. They were also a great rock band, something that music fans were for some reason in denial of. So the Monkees were stuck with the little girls, who lost interest by the time Head came out.And this is a shame, as Head not only is a wierd, hilarious snapshot of where the Monkees were situated in pop culture in the late 60's, but also a great example of late 60's experimental film-making. There is something truly different about Head, a sense that you have no idea where its going or why. The comedy is slightly high brow as well, not slapstick like the TV show. Not everyone will like it, but if you are a Monkees fan, prepare to be amazed. Be proud to show it to your friends!!!! The DVD unfortunately does not employ true widescreen, but "full screen widescreen" which I have yet to fully understand. The picture quality is varied. There are some sequences, like the opening "Porpoise Song" number, which are very scratchy and dotted, yet others look crystal clear. This may be the intent of the film-makers, yet I doubt it. The sound is great, and the many trailers and TV ads included are a treat, but a commentary track by the guys themselves would have been very welcome. An excellent edition to anyones DVD collection as it is, and you cant beat the price.

Review: I FIRST SAW "HEAD" WHEN IT ORIGINALLY CAME OUT WHEN I WAS 8 YRS OLD. I COULD NOT GET ENOUGH OF IT!DAVY JONES WAS SUCH A DREAM DOLL IN THIS MOVIE. MY FAVORITE PARTS WERE ANY HE WAS IN;ESPECIALLY WHEN HE WAS WALKING THROUGH THE WOODS! I WATCHED THIS MOVIE WITH MY FACE 12 INCHES FROM THE SCREEN AND IN BLACK AND WHITE NO LESS. I WANT TO OWN A COPY FOR MY OWN TO SHOW MY DAUGHTER SO SHE CAN SEE THAT THEY WERE THE BACKSTREET BOYS OF THE SIXTIES/SEVENTIES!

Review: "Head" is one of the funniest movies I've seen. It's the Monkees at their best. Maybe it wasn't a box office smash back in 1968, but I can honestly say if you're a Monkees fan and love a good laugh, this is for you! The key scenes in the movie were Micky Dolenz vs the Coke machine and Mike Nesmith's birthday party.

Summary: The most Psychedelic, Grooviest movie ever!!
Review: The first time I saw Head, I was blown away by the unbelievable satire of my all-time favorite group, The Monkees. Head is not for uptight people, in fact, you have to watch Head with no preconcetption whatsoever. (I think that's somewhat along the lines of something the Swami said in his speech.) I have watched Head so many times, I actually know the sequence of events. From one dedicated fan to many potential fans, you'll love it!!
