Summary: It is supposed to be a musical fantasy...enjoy!
Review: What is wrong with people?! Xanadu might not be "Citizen Kane" or "Terms of Endearment," but the thing is, it never claimed to be in the first place! It is a musical, fantasy, light romance...and if that is all you're looking for IT IS A BLAST!

Olivia Newton-John has so much charisma and sings so beautifully you won't be able to keep your eyes off her. Gene Kelly is charming and amusing in his role and the music is FANTASTIC!

It is a great time and very entertaining...give it a chance and if you let yourself have a good time with it, you will accomplish just that!

Summary: Xanadu is pure fantasy and escapism. Good music.
Review: I should be embarrassed to admit it, but I have always loved this movie. While I will be the first to admit, the acting is not what you'd call first rate, or even average,I think the story is a lot of fun, Olivia is sexy as hell, and the music takes me back to the days when music was memorable. This is one of those movies that you either hate or you love. I admit it. I like music, I like movie musicals, and I like to be entertained. This is a movie for anyone. You don't have to think to watch this movie.

Summary: Xanadu & ELO rocks
Review: This is one of the silliest, best films ever made. I'm so glad to be able to add my name to the chorus of those hold this film in a special place in their heart. I'll agree too that this movie is not on the top of anybody's "best" list. But, Xanadu moves, has lots of color, peculiar style, and the music is phenomenal. I can't wait to watch it on DVD.

Summary: Get the DVD, but be warned!
Review: If your reading this you must like the film and are thinking about buying the DVD. Picture and sound quality are top notch, BUT, I never bought many VHS tapes because of their commericals at the start, can't stand them, well the DVD has a one minute and twenty second Universal promo that you can't skip over or avoid in any way. A really bad idea! Please let them know how you feel about this, otherwise we will be sitting through as many things as we have to wait through at the theater. Popcorn and candy ads, you know the routine.

Summary: DVD makes it really worth watching again.
Review: I own a VHS, LaserDisc, and now a DVD copy of this movie. As you can tell I'm a bit biased in that I was fascinated by it when I first saw it in a theater. I was really disapointed when none of the previous formats provided a wide screen view. The opening dance sequence is short changed in any other format as are several other sequences. I loved the music and the dancing. It is definitely a surprise among most films. No violence, few if any harsh words, no drugs, and no sex (however some of the costumes we a bit eye catching but hardly push todays standards). I really think the movie makes it's point in not giving up on ones dreams and that romance can happen in the strangest of circumstances. Then of course there is Olivia who can light up a room just by smiling. It is a movie very much worth seeing just for the fun of it.

Summary: One of my all time favorites.
Review: Reading some of these other reviews is a bit dissapointing. Xanadu was a thrill for me to watch as an 8 year old boy at the time it was made...and it's still one of my favorite movies. It's supposed to be a fantasy movie, and why someone would try to an-a-lize bits and pieces and this and that of a movie, and this actor and that I don't know. You either like it or you don't... if you want to chop down and break down something...be an overpaid and meaningless film critic.

Summary: The music saves the day...
Review: Despite the awful costuming, the preponderance of stars on roller-skates, and a jaw-droppingly weird Don-Bluth animated sequence, XANADU is a guilty pleasure. An odd amalgam of old-fashioned movie musical cliches and 1980s pop-rock music, we can overlook Michael Beck's wooden performance and concentrate on Olivia Newton-John's loveliness and Gene Kelly's, well, Kelly-ness. The music, by John Farrar and ELO's Jeff Lynne, is some of the best pop of the era. The idea of the film, that one of the mythological Greek muses comes to Earth to give inspiration to a struggling painter, is not new to film, but the clunky way it's presented here is charming and light. The ersatz visual effects are quaint and funny when viewed today and help the overall "glitz" factor that the film was aiming for so desperately. Picture and sound on the DVD couldn't be better, and it's great to see the film letterboxed after all its full-frame exposure on television and video. XANADU helped to destroy the movie musical genre, but when compared to say, MAME, it isn't really so bad!

Summary: Not Quite Gold, but Glitters
Review: I bought the DVD of 'Xanadu" without having seen it in its entirety over the years. I've had the soundtrack since 1980, when the film was released, but somehow kept missing it on cable or TV and never thought to rent it.

I'd heard all the atrocious reviews and pans, but decided the music, not to mention the one sequence I had seen on TV -- the Gene Kelly/Olivia Newton-John dance number, was worth having in DVD format.

I'm glad I did. OK...this is *not* a great film. There was a terrific concept here, but some bad writing gets in the way. In addition, some of the songs are not used to their full potential as backdrops for sequences. From the production notes on the DVD, it appears the script was rushed...so no surprise. So, given the words they have to say, I don't fault the actors for their performances -- and they're not as wooden as people say, in my opinion.

Gene Kelly is charming no matter what you put him in. I don't know why people say "What was he thinking?" when it comes to 'Xanadu.' I can sense exactly what he was thinking: that this film would be a wonderful fantasy and interesting fusion of the 40's and 80's. He is so much fun to watch that even with bad writing, his smile makes it all worth it.

Then there is Olivia Newton-John...quite frankly, perfect as the muse. Again, given what the writers gave her...she delivers fine. She is so luminous and beautiful you cannot take your eyes off her.

So -- if you want an eye appealing little movie to watch when there are no others...try this one on for size. Don't go in expecting greatness and you'll come out the other side saying, "That wasn't so bad." I wish someone would take this concept and write it the way it should have been to begin with...and REALLY make a beautiful movie musical out of it.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Plot and dialogue weak. Music and visual effects engaging.
Review: Olivia Newton-John fans will be pleased with the music and staged performances. The plot, dialogue and acting are weak.
