Summary: THE MAKING OF A MAN
Review: At 17yo, Harold remains cloistered in a life of great monetary wealth combined with a poverty of independence. His one guilty pleasure being Frommian necrophilia: he can't let go of death. A telling account is his inability to take his eyes off of a casket while attending the funeral Mass of a stranger. Ironically, it is at that service Harold meets Maude. She's not dour and fatalistic like Harold. Shes not 17 either. It is from Maude that Harold learns of boundless opportunities that await...should only he take a chance. Together they embark on a journey; Harold finding peace in life, and the elderly Maude seeking actualization in death. Cat Stevens' powerful score brightens up this touchstone black comedy. Truly magnificent!

Summary: I agree with all the above, but I have a question:
Review: Does anyone know if there is a video version in "letterbox" (i.e. original theater aspect ratio). I'm sure the "pan and scan" misses a lot, and that's the only version I found, even on laser. Will it be released on DVD?

Summary: Great Therapy!
Review: Harold is 19. He is young, wealthy... and suicidal. Bright, observant, Harold is too perceptive to be spared a realization he lives life devoid of meaningful relationships, and of meaning itself. He attempts to escape his shallow, pointless existence by killing himself...over and over again...in a string of the most hilarious suicides imaginable. His self-absorbed socialite mother, who set the benchmark for shallow pointlessness, is hapless witness to all Harold's 'deaths.' Enter Maude. In the sunset weeks of her 9th decade, she waltzes to funerals with a sunny umbrella. Life's faithful lover, she never rejects an opportunity to partake in a new experience, whether bitter or sweet, pure or profane. Polar opposites, Harold and Maude become one of the oddest couples ever committed to film. Maude imparts to Harold life's most important precepts, baptizing him in philosophies from which he emerges a healthier person. The story line, settings and performances justify Harold and Maude's reputation as an enduring classic. Cat Stevens' heartwarming lyrics and music make it complete. As a professional who works with children and adolescents, I suspect some of this film's appeal is the philosophy it promotes. Harold and Maude reminds us of a basic human principle: To embrace the fullness of life, we must first embrace ourselves.

Summary: Only the best film ever
Review: Harold and Maud was a great comedy and also the greatest love story of all time. The funny, yet realistic way of Harold faking his death for attention is hillarious, and his love with maud, a 79 year old woman is incredible. I have never seen a better movie in any other category. If you have not seen this movie, you are missing a huge part of movies.

Summary: "Like knives, Sunshine?..."
Review: "Suicidal" Harold hooks up with a woman sixty years his senior. Unfazed by his love of death and obsession with dying was little-old-lady Maude. Both loved going to the funerals of complete strangers and dining in the middle of construction sights; Maude was not bashful in helping herself to others property, especially the automobiles she cannot drive! Most funny are the many ways Harold scares off the blind dates his mother finds him (the third accidentally one-ups him), his military uncle with the pull-string "arm," as well his mother herself: as Harold pretends to dangle from a noose she ignores him in disgust, making a phone call. A cult-classic; a guity pleasure. Not something to sleep through.

Summary: MANY MAGICAL MOMENTS
Review: One of the true cult films, H&M presents an emarassment of rich characterizations. Maude, Halocast survivor, and Harold, an unspeakably wealthy sort-of draft dodger, share a love of death rituals ranging from ceremonial suicide, pyres, funerals, internments, caskets, hearses, etc... What they don't share is sixty years - as he is 17, and her 79! Harolds cliche-ridden domineering mother provides much in the way of Generation Gap humor. Film says a lot about the co-mingling of flesh new and old. LAGNIAPPE: great Cat Stevens tunes you'll probably find nowhere else!
