Summary: one of a horror classic
Review: I watched this in cinema many many years before, and watched this movie recently on DVD. I may have watched this for >10 times, on LD, VHS.....still this is a real great horror movie. It lost a little bit of shock, but still I am amazed by the dark humor, and the way the story tells, and its explicit gore and sex scene. A must for everyone, not just horror fan!

Summary: 80's Horror at its finest!
Review: We all remember the first day we got our DVD player and were able to jump right in and start building our DVD collection. Oh, what a glorious day that was. I just remember being on cloud nine as I thought of all the movies I wanted to add to my collection. This movie was one of the first ones that I wanted to add to my collection. So, after finding out that it was out of print, all I could do was wait till the day they would release this horror classic again. Well, the wait has definetly been worth it! This DVD package is top notch. They just don't make movies like this anymore. If you grew up in the 80's like myself, horror movies were everywhere. Some horrible, some good, and once in a while a classic like this. A great story, cheesy but good acting, lots of nudity for no reason (ya gotta love that), massive amounts of gore, and zombies make up for a movie that is guaranteed to please. The film transfer and widescreen presentation couldn't be better. It's also a good disc to test out your sound system. Sounds great. The extras include a commentary by director Stuart Gordon, Brian Yuzna, Jeffrey Combs, Robert Sampson, Barbara Crampton, and Bruce Abbott. It's great to hear so many peope involved with this share great insight and fond memories of making this movie. Included on disc 2 are interviews with Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna, writer Dennis Paoli, composer Richard Band, and Fangoria editor Tony Timpone which is actually very good. 16 extended scenes, 1 deleted scene, 5 t.v. spots, 1 trailer, and numerous other goodies that are worth checking out. It took me all night to check out everything on this 2 disc set. When it says that are over 6 hours of bonus materials in this collection, they aren't kiddin'. Overall a great buy. I would easily pay [$] for this set. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy movie fans.

Summary: Excellent B Horror movie
Review: Re-animator is one of the best B-grade horror movie at that time.
Of course, we cannot compared with the special effect with today's standard, but it used wisely with limited budget.... Sometimes, "mechanical" sf is better than some computer made sf today.

Summary: Great flick, Adequate DVD
Review: I've waited literally years for this one. By the time I bought a DVD player the original edition was out-of-print. So, finally, the moment we've all waited for...well, it's alright. First of all I WILL say that the new transfer is first rate, although I was a little disapointed that the picture isn't clearer; I guess I just didn't realize the limitations of the original negative. Sela vis. And the new 5.1 sound mix? Fantastic! I love the inclusion of the THX Optimizer for those of us who can really use one to calibrate our televisions to the proper settings. Now for the unpleasant part. The new interviews with Stuart Gordon and Brian Uzna are good but really don't offer much insight and get a little monotonous. And all the "extended scenes?" I'd hate to ruin it for you all but they were ALL included on the original, R-rated VHS release (though not on the unrated one). I still consider this a must-have but as for hardcore fans looking for the Holy Grail, this one just missed it by an inch or so.

Summary: Interiors
Review: One cannot help but notice, on a rare sabbatical from curing cancer and working for world peace, that there are no exterior scenes in which actors appear in this piquant examination of professional ethics in the medical establishment that makes 'ER' look like, well, 'ER'. The back stabbing in question ceasing to be a metaphor at one point. Just thought I'd mention it, though. No dancing around the Dahlias then, just corpses.
Allegedly funny, this modest genre outing proves nothing less than the pornography of violence, the sadism of which precludes any real fun. Did I say fun? There must be a reason why it has engendered so many repeat viewings and that can only be due to the performance of Jeff Combs, although the rest of the cast is strong. Combs manages to introduce elements of a walking cartoon into his performance without losing focus and realism. It's quite a turn. Having found his niche, Mr Combs has continued to work mostly outside the mainstream of movie production where he has no doubt progressed from playing the unhinged Mr West to characters without any window frame at all. I have only seen three of his oeuvre, so I cannot testify to the accuracy of this statement but should the situation change I expect uncanny prescience to be the order of the day.
Nice touch when a character actually collapses from shock, an affliction that curiously escaped the beleagered Ash in 'The Evil Dead' in which he suffered considerably worse without the employ (however Dionysian) of a side kick.

Summary: A little too much of a great thing
Review: Let me say that I cannot go beyond what the rest of the Re-Animator loving reviewers have said- but when looking for this on DVD- I was saddened to see that it was out of print. Then, news of this Millenium Edition came about and then I had something to live for! The movie is still pretty good for a horror flick (I think one of the best that came from the eighties)- plenty of T & A from the scrumptious Barbara Crampton »huh-huh«; blood, guts and gore; and some decent acting by the rest of the cast- Jeffery Combs (Herbert West) and David Gale (Dr. Hill) come to mind with their hilarious rivalry.

Anyway, I titled this as a little too of a great thing- do we really need three seperate interviews with various folks like Brian Yuzna and Richard Band? The one with Yuzna and Stuart are boring- very dry, but the interview with the writer Dennis Paoli was quite interesting. Besides the horrible Theaterical Trailer- there are more useless tv spots that start out with Warning! and the same stupid message about how scary the film is. The commentaries on disc one are fun- like in Bride of Re-Animator- and the options for the movie soundtrack are extensive.

My recommendation- if you hate horror flicks- you'll love this one 'cause it has everything... mainly a plot! Make note- this Lovecraft movie is loosely based on Herbert West- Re-Animator; the sequel, Bride of Re-Animator goes a little bit more along the lines of the original story, but in many places veers completely off the story line a la Bride of Frankenstein. To read the original story- pick up Dagon, and other Macabre tales of H.P. Lovecraft, this is the only place where I have found this particular story of his.

Summary: Wow
Review: What more could you want in a horror film? This one has it all, zombies, interesting characters, plot twists, awesome sets (the morgue/hospital and the basement especially), great action scenes, and lots of gore including brain removal, eyeball burst-yuck, gut spillage, bone saw through a corpse, decapitation, etc. This is such a classic, a must see! Right up there with Return of the Living Dead, the Beyond, and Dead Alive (which was inspired by this film). A really awesome ending too, this might just be the second best horror film ever after the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
