Summary: DVD is nice update of a very odd cult film
Review: I first saw this movie in a theater during its original release, and my immediate reaction was to loathe it. I was horrified. But after a few days I decided that, after getting over the shock, I enjoyed it in a quirky way. It is a great snapshot of a subculture of the 1980s. It does move a bit slowly compared to other modern films, but the costuming and characters are engaging. The music is a perfect companion to this weird piece. It is not for everyone -- there are some flashes of violent sex, adult language, and a lot of casual drug use. The DVD adds a few extra behind-the-scenes stuff, though not as much as some other DVDs. Plus it is a better quality copy than my VHS. This movie is for people who like movies like "Repo Man" or "Eating Raoul", and makes a nice addition to a collection of cult movies.

Review: I first saw this opus as a teen in 1984 and, impressionable as I was at the time, wanted to inhabit the surreal world portrayed in "Liquid Sky". Almost 20 years later I'm watching the DVD with wistful nosatlgia. This cult flick has everything a bored suburban teenager could possibly want - drugs, androgyny, science fiction, fashion and the quirkiest of soundtracks, to boot. Firmly forever to be etched in the 80's because of its' new wave pretensions, "Liquid Sky" nonetheless deserves to be unleashed upon generation after generation - the additional DVD footage is a revelation to those of us who saw the film when it originally was released. "A period piece which remains timeless" is the best way I could describe this film.

Review: I have dear, fond memories of going to see this film at midnight on the campus of Buffalo State College and being 22 years old and just raging. This film was really "of the moment" for the era. We were wacky folks back. Really the original "goths" as well. I'll buy this film on DVD and watch it with new friends and tell them tales of the Old Days...

Summary: 80's fashion, music and fantasy flick: bizarre characters!
Review: I have loved this movie since 1984. It's a cult classic that rivals films like THE WALL, REPO MAN & THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. And it's better than any of the above, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION. I never known a film-maker with such a bizarre, fantastic imagination, a native sense of pure shock-factor and just plain fun!!! The dark atmosphere/mood is unparalleled.Basically, LIQUID SKY is the irresistible story of a gorgeous, androgonous, female fashion model who is addicted to heroin (or something equally bad news), and who gets her drugs from her female lover Adrian. She dresses as both a man and a woman--the height of 80's beauty and mystery. The actress, Anne Carlisle, who plays the protagonist could not have been better cast. In fact, I think she helped write the screenplay and the novel on whivh the film is based. She's pure genuis and pure sexuality. There are elements of sexual & chemical adiction, male-hatred by lesbians and lots of voyuerism. Thhis movie is so far out, nothing has even come close to its allure since 1983, when it was first released on VHS. YOU MUST SEE THIS FILM!!!!

Summary: Must See Movie
Review: I have never written a review on Amazon[.com] before, and I'm not the type who likes to share my opinions with others, but I feel compelled to write about this movie. I can't recommend it enough. No other movie has changed the way that I think and perceive quite like this. The sci-fi/new wave heroin dealer/lesbian chic plot is a device that the filmmaker uses to make some very powerful points. It is very easy to lose yourself in the story, the unusual sets and characters, but this is not just a freak-show movie. It's a story with a point. The film's main issues are sex roles, feminism and hypocrisy, and the juxtaposition of the 60's counter-culture with the 80's new wave scene. The only drawback, if you would call it a drawback, is that it takes more than one viewing to appreciate all that this movie has to offer, definitely a movie worth owning.

Summary: A feast for the senses
Review: I saw Liquid Sky around the time it first came out. I recently viewed it again and came away with the same thoughts about Liquid Sky. First off, if you are narrow-minded: 1.look elsewhere 2.be forgiving of some of the dialogue stumbles, cliches and production values from this film on a budget 3.if you're easily offended & live with a Disneyland-sense of what life/cinema/artistic expression is all about - look elsewhere go see Saving Nemo, a mindless comedy, or a car & gun flick. If you are not one of the moral majority: 1. This film has much to say about human values (the teacher/student dialogue is quite revealing) 2.the soundtrack is brilliant,dissonant, haunting and chaotic (the dumbskull who posted the derogatory comments about the music should stick to Garth Brooks or whatever passes for mainstream music for him. 3. For all the posts referencing the NY Greenwich scene - I'm from NY..yeah there are suggestions of the early 80's club scene - no doubt, but no one mentioned specifically the similarities to the 1-9-7-0's Ziggy/Bowie fashion in the film (Bowie was mentioned once in the film - perhaps you missed it?) 4. the film could have done without the German scientist/amorous Jewish woman characters , but it is what it is. 5. I also live & worked in LA for many years, and everyone I knew who saw Liquid Sky loved it! You've got a lot of tough critic's out there too. Is it Sullivan Travels, Ikiru, All About Eve? - No! It's not. It's a film for mature viewer's who relish the quirky, the startling, and the "look what I stumbled across" at the video rental place kinda film. Find it. Rent it. You'll remember it! Love it or not, you'll store Liquid Sky's music in your thoughts for a long time to come.

I remember walking out of the theatre and hearing some guy say, "I don't get it. I just don't get what the point of it was.", and I was thinking, films like this are just wasted on small-minded folk like him. To appreciate this film, you have to just let go, suspend disbelief, allow your mind to be invaded and expanded, and just have fun...the humour is deep. ANd if ya don't get it, you're not the kind of person this film was made for. I especially love Margaret's monologue on the roof top of her east side apartment, when she explains to one of her Johns why she does what she does and why she believes in what she does - one of the most creative and confident statements of self-affirmation ever put to film. Just great.

Review: I usually enjoy indie & cult films, but whenever I want to refer to the worst movie I've ever seen, I refer to this one. This film is filled with people that I found completely unsympathetic, doing revolting things to each other. If that's your taste, enjoy.
