Rating: Summary: Sweet, charming movie Review: I thought that Halle Berry and Natalie Desselle were delightfully funny in this film. 2 girls from Georgia go to California chasing a dream, get a little side-tracked, but achieve their dream anyway, meeting some wonderful people along the way. The characters played by Martin Landau and Ian Richardson were SOOO funny - especially when Mr. Manley goes to the record store, looking for "The RRRRRRRap section." I thought that the actors playing the girls' boyfriends were good too - a little kooky, but genuinely good people. Nisi and Micky may appear to be gold diggers, but it turns out they have hearts of gold, and for this, they are rewarded. Who says good girls finish last?
Rating: Summary: PRETTY OK Review: I thought the movie was pretty funny. Although I'm sure I'm not the only person to see the similarity between this movie and "DISORDERLIES" with the FAT BOYS. Oh yeah, the little thick chick Natalie steals the show from Halle.
Rating: Summary: This Movie Is Pure Fun! Review: I was pleasantly suprised by this movie. It was really funny! I thought I would die laughung during the scene when Hallie and Natalie's characters encounter the bidet in the bathroom for the first time. It was a long time before I knew what one of those things were used for too! Hallie's acting really stood out in this movie and I think that it was primarily her acting which made the movie so touching. Plus, it was great to see Martin Landau again! Even though I would not sport big hair, long nails or gold teeth, I like the way this movie showed how (some of) the characters had great ambitions and big hearts to match as well as a genuine affection for one another. This could easily have been a "G" rated movie. But, since no one goes to "G" rated movies (a big myth), a little profanity was added to up the rating. That was my only disappointment. It's otherwise a fun family movie. Plus it allows for discussion about stereotypes, pursuing your goals, lying, trust, respect etc. See it!
Rating: Summary: 5 for Comedy Review: It might not be a classic like Gone with the Wind, but I don't think this movie is going for that race. For it's field of comedy, though, it very funny and well-written(and well-acted,and basicly well-made).I quess the editoral reviewer was looking for a comedy only Shakespear could write. This was a great movie and I advise you to purchase it. It won't get boring if you know the ending (at least for me) because before the ending of the movie (I wanted to use the words, "near the end") it dosen't matter.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Hilarious!!!! Review: Long before Halle's Oscar, she was just another B star celeb. This movie is her best comedic performance to date. Halle shines as a southern girl who decides to live her drams of being famous in LA with her best friend (Natalie Desselle) and wind up acting in a much bigger role than they anticipated. Natalie played the perfect chubby, but funny sidekick to Halle's Niecy. Although it starts as a comedy, it ends with excitement and joy. I recommend this movie to everyone who needs a great laugh!!!
Rating: Summary: Halle, How Could You? Review: Man, this film was tacky, tacky, tacky. It's one of the very worst films I've seen. Two hoochie mamas go to Beverly Hills to stay at some rich codger's mansion and get into all sorts of drama. The filmmakers leave no stone unturned in reinforcing African American stereotypes. Halle obviously moved on to the Oscar-winning "Monster's Ball," which is proof that you can recover from bad mistakes as "B.A.P.S."
Rating: Summary: A GREAT MOVIE, NECE! Review: Man, this movie was so hilarious. This is Halle Berry's best film, by far. I enjoyed this movie from the minute i put it in. I watched it 3 times before i had to return it to the video store. Their portrayal of Ghetto girls was sooo funny! Their ghetto talk is even more hilarious! Gosh, those nails and outfits! But another good thing is that its a feel-good movie filled with laughs. Anyone looking for a great time, rent this!
Rating: Summary: Fiiiinnne and yo' sef Review: Monster's Ball is ain't but then again, was it really intended to be? Lots of fun, far from serious, light and entertaining. It was nice seeing Martin Landau in such a different role, too. I do think the intent of the movie was satirical and therefore meant to be enjoyed with all the sense of humor one could muster--(with that in mind)I laughed all the way through.
Rating: Summary: the funniest movie ever made Review: oh my lord...I just LOVE this movie! it is so f**king hilarious! great performances from halle berry and natalie dessler! if you want a good laugh, just get this!
Rating: Summary: Townsend makes the film he parodied in Hollywood shuffle.... Review: Robert Townsend made a WRONG move in his film career with B.A.P.S. An unfunny satire on the "Ghetto Fabulous" lifestyle, this film is as offensive as an Amos N' Andy episode. The plot revolves around two gold-digging B.A.P.S. (Halle Berry, Natalie Deselle) and their quest for fame and fortune in the music world. They dump their jerricurl pimp-suit wearing scrub boyfriends and head out to Hollywood on a quest for stardom. After failing to make it in an audition as video dancers they run into an ailing white millionaire who wants to leave his riches to them. ???? This is where the story makes a WRONG turn. In the millionaires mansion the B.A.P.S. act like slaves in the Master's plantation and the movie goes from awful to abysmal.
Like Meteor Man, Townsend does not understand the culture of the lifestyle he's making fun of in his film. And that is the downfall of this satire. Townsend doesn't know Baps, from hoochies, baby mamas, pigeons, or chicken heads. Likewise he doesn't know the difference between Macks, Pimps, Hustlers, B-Boys, or No Job Scrubs. To make fun of a culture in satire you must live in it and be a part of it. Ironically, Townsend is the one now doing the "Hollywood Shuffle" he poked fun at over 10 years ago directing a movie so similar to the satirical "Jivetime Jimmy's Revenge" It's scary.
Halle Berry says she "was having fun" doing this movie; it wasn't fun for me. This is one of her worst performances. She and Desselle are modern day mammies. I was embarrassed to see her in this movie; she is far above trash like this. Robert Townsend should bow his head in shame for directing this modern minstrel show. It disheartens me to know that African-Americans could make something so racist and offensive after many have died fighting against negative images like this for decades. To see a good satire on race and stereotypes Get Spike Lee's Bamboozled.
