Summary: Allen's Best Movie Ever!!
Review: This is the movie that made me like Woody Allen. I always thought he was strange when I was a kid but this changed my mind. I went backwards I guess and just recently bought the Woody Allen box set. I am seeing those movies for the first time but I still like MMM the best. Allan Alda does a fantastic job with his part and so does Woody. It's about a group of friends who investigate the disappearance of W. Allen & Keaton's neighbor whom they just met. Keaton is obsessed with solving the case and W. Allen is constantly trying to talk her out of it by complaining about everything so they get into some pretty funny situations. This has all the qualities and more that made Annie Hall such a historical movie. You won't be disappointed.

Summary: What Woody Allen can do at his best.
Review: This is the type of film that many people want from Woody Allen. It is fast-paced, with witty dialogue, and a creative plot that doesn't take itself too seriously. And there is more than just surface humor to engage the reflective viewer, e.g., the use of the camera as an agent of mystery (we are continually given shots from around the corner or through fences or down slightly lit hallways). Like the husband played by Woody Allen the viewer is drawn into the mystery slowly but surely, until participation and enjoyment is full-blown and rather insane. We don't quite know what we are watching or how to watch it (Hitchcock does Nancy Drew?) but feel that there is a genuine mystery to solve (who the heck are these people and why are they acting as they do?) and it is more and more gratifying to take each new step. There is no great pretention here as there is in "Crimes and Misdemeanors". Our expectations are never great since at each moment we feel that everyone can (and might) by their own efforts stop the pursuit and end the whole insanity that is unfolding; at least until the final moments when things have gone too far and events take over and everyone just holds on hoping and trying for the best. We still don't quite know what has happened at the end but we do feel pleasantly satisfied and feel that something meaningful has come our way. That result, I think, is what Woody Allen achieves when at his best and that is what happens here. Additionally, the wonderful use of NYC as the main setting is as good as in any of Allen's films; and the music inviting and cleverly used. These elements alone give reason enough to spend time (and time again) with this film.

Summary: Comfortable Comedy
Review: This is Woody Allen doing screwball comedy for the contemporary film viewer. The familiar Allen schtick of neurotic tension, fearfulness, and anxiety, the effective Allen-Keaton chemistry, the lovely New York settings, and a cast of great supporting players make this an easy watch. Sure, the humor veers into slapstick, but the characters are so rich and multi-layered and the script is so dense and fast moving that one forgives some of the broadness. The references to film noir and classic detective yarns embellish the pleasing story. The interplay between Allen and Keaton allows the history of their fictional marriage to be evident, with all its warmth, frustrations, doubts, and reliability. The distractions that Huston's and Alda's characters provide to each heightens the fun. The comic apsects of the movie don't stop it from having some genuine surprises. Although not the finest film in the world or even Allen's best, I have watched this many, many times and plan to enjoy it for a long while more.

Review: This movie is so witty and hilarious, almost creepy at some parts, and beautifully filmed. I reccomend it for any Woody Allen fan or movie lover!

Review: This was another one of Woody Allen's wonderful movies. I love how his character is so nervous all the time when he and his wife (played by the wonderful Diane Keaton) investigate is great. Allen plays Larry Lipton, a writer/publisher who just wants his and his wife's life to be normal. We soon meet his wife, Carol (Keaton), who is definitely more ambitious and more willing to take a risk. The supporting cast includes Alan Alda, Anjelica Huston, Ron Rifkin, and Joy Behar. For the Liptons, things are just fine until they meet their neighbors, who seem very nice and welcoming. When they learn that the wife has 'died' of a heart attack, Carol becomes suspicious, especially when she learns that the wife had a heart disease, something she never told Carol. Larry dismisses this and wants her to leave it alone and let the husband grieve. Yet Carol thinks he is a little too up-beat after losing his wife of over 20 years. So naturally, Carol investigates along with her very good friend Ted (Alda). Larry slowly becomes jealous that the two of them are together all the time and thinks that if he doesn't become more ambitious, that his marriage is going to fall apart. So he decides to join his wife on solving this mystery. Together, the two encounter much more than they had planned on. The result is priceless. Their little one-liners to each other (Carol calling him a 'Fuddy-Duddy,' reminding me of Annie Hall saying 'La de da...') are great. If you're a Woody Allen fan, this is a must see movie. If you're not a Woody Allen fan, you may not enjoy it. But if you have never seen any of his movies and don't know much about him, rent this and see if you like it!

Summary: Allen at his finest, funniest and frighteningest!
Review: Woody Allen has made a lot of cinema for what is it, nearly forty years? It seems ridiculous that he can make so many good films, with such a range of background and material. Here he is again, miraculously combining the tragic reality of a series of killings into a workable comedy about just how seriously we take the things that go on around us. This is a long film, yet it never loses its grip on us. Like the character of Woody in the film, we are inexorably drawn into the story, whether we like it or not. Both the comedy of Woody expressing doubts about the truth of anything and everything (until he finally catches on) and the utter tension as he and his wife are drawn into a web from which it will finally be too late to escape, are masterful. As Woody goes through the final scene, grim now in his understanding of so much that he formerly doubted, including his own relationship, the drama is brought to an unexpected and highly satisfactory close and we are left with a close-mouthed feeling that "that was close." Allen plays with real life in unreal ways. His strength lies partly in the angle he shows it from, whether humorous or tragic. But whichever way it goes, it's always Allen and I, for one, am thankful that we can still rely on him. Top notch film worth every star you can lay your hands on.

Summary: One of Allen's Best. A Perfect Little Film.
Review: Woody Allen's love of New York City really shines through in this comic caper about a pair of aging but sophisticated Manhattanites who suspect their neighbor of murdering his wife. Actually, it is Keaton's character who suspects; Allen plays the doubting and timid husband who gets dragged into her amateur investigation, if only to save his marriage. Keaton is looking to add excitement to her life; Allen, as usual, is perfectly comfortable with how things are. Their interaction is very, very funny, as is the sweet performance by Alan Alda as a family friend and writer who dreams of opening a restaurant with Keaton (who he has always had a crush on. Can we blame him!), and Angelica Huston as a cool and sexually provocative writer whose book Allen is editing. By the end, all four have joined in a wacky plot to catch the killer. We also hear some great music and see a side of New York City as only Allen's eye for charm can capture it.
