Summary: One of the brightest and best
Review: "When Harry Met Sally" is one of the brightest and best romantic comedies ever made. The story of the friendship between Harry and Sally crackles with wit and insight into the differences between men and women and the way those differences affect relationships, sex, and commitment.

It is a tribute to the quality and realism of Nora Ephron's fine, funny script that we come to identify with and care so much about Harry (played by Billy Crystal), Sally (played by Meg Ryan), Marie (Sally's best friend played by Carrie Fisher), and Jess (Harry's best pal portrayed by Bruno Kirby). These are four urban upwardly mobile young people who excel in their professions but who are tentative in their relationships with the opposite sex. We follow these four characters over a decade as they grow as people and mature in their relationships.

Rob Reiner's assured direction keeps the story moving along at a lively pace. There are no dull moments in this movie. And the gifted, urbane cast of Crystal, Ryan, Kirby, and Fisher are exceptionally good. These intriguing, facile actors bring exquisite charm, humor, pathos, and intelligence to their roles. It's an ideal cast.

So as surely as Harry realizes that he's in love with Sally, you'll fall head over heels for "When Harry Met Sally". It's a perfect, perceptive marvel of romantic comedy.

Summary: Just a beautiful, loveable romantic comedy
Review: What made the movie work so marvelously when it came out and makes it still work today is the marvelous and witty script on the one hand and the incredible conversational chemistry between Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan on the other. Crystal gets nearly all the good lines, though Meg more than holds her own with slightly less dialog. This is the more remarkable when one remembers that this is the film that made her a star. For the past decade, she has been the premier comedienne in Hollywood, but this was really the first of her string of romantic hits. As great as she is, what really pushes the movie forward are Billy Crystal's constant and bizarre reflections on all matter of things. One dance critic wrote that while Fred Astaire drove all the dances he did with Ginger Rogers, she had a genius for responding facially to his moves. In the same way, Billy might start and carry on the conversations, but it is the way that she manages to respond to his verbosity that makes it great dialog instead of great monolog.

Recently on a gaming message board I visit, someone posted a list of the worst movies of all time as voted by readers of Maxim magazine. OK, I know that is a guys' magazine, but even so, I was shocked to see that this was voted one of the worst movies of all time. How is that possible? I was also shocked to see that an Amazon.com reviewer proclaimed in their title that this movie hasn't aged well. I just rewatched it and I couldn't disagree more: it has aged magnificently.

As far as the movie's central conundrum is concerned--that is, can a man and a woman be friends--I am delighted to report that my two closest friends in the world are women. Yes, it can be done.

As a resident of Chicago and former graduate student at the University of Chicago, I have to point out that this movie does contain one of the most spectacular goofs in the recent history of film. Harry meets Sally on the UC campus, from which they are going to drive to New York. The specific location is on the main quad, right on the traffic circle in front of Harper Library and the Graduate School of Business. Goof number one is a minor one: Harry and Sally then drive down the path leading directly towards Regenstein Library. Any UC student knows that a permanently locked gate blocks any car traffic in that direction. The second and much, much bigger good is that a few seconds later, they are shown driving down Lake Shore Drive towards the Loop . . . from the North. Anyone who knows Chicago at all realizes that this is impossible. UC is several miles to the south of the Loop, and to go to New York you drive east, also away from the Loop. I know that they showed them driving to the Loop because it made an interesting shot, but it still comes across as very weird, as if they drove ten miles north out of their way and then came back south, something that they profoundly anal retentive Sally would never have done.

Summary: Pleasant But Not Memorable, Except For One Scene
Review: Story: Billy Crystal is Harry, Meg Ryan is Sally, Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher are their friends. Harry meets Sally right after college, as they car-pool to New York. They become good friends, and often talk about their erratic and generally unsuccessful attempts to find The Right Person. Their friends, meanwhile, marry each other and try to convince Harry and Sally that they belong together. Almost two hours (12 years to them) later, they figure out they belong together.

I like these nice people, and they generally tell a nice story, but "pleasant" is the strongest adjective I would apply to this story. The vignettes of couples telling how they met are nice, and the Sally-faking-an-orgasm-in-the-restaurant scene is memorable (although I've seen the clip, and imitations thereof, so much that it's become boring), but the rest of the film is like sitting on a bench in a park: pleasant and somewhat refreshing, but not inspiring or thought-provoking in any way. The movie is nice, innocuous escapism, but nothing more.

Summary: The Ultimate New York Love Story
Review: What I like best about this movie is not the witty repartees or the great chemistry between Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan and the terrific cameo by Carrie Fisher, but the very New Yorkness about the movie. Where else could this have been made?

Summary: Mildly amusing chick flick.
Review: Ask someone who's seen the movie to name a scene in it, and odds are they'll come up with Meg's fake orgasm scene. It's about the only thing anyone (other than die-hard chick flick afficionados) remembers about this mildly amusing, but overrated film.

Summary: The movie's as good as ever, the DVD adds much more!
Review: You've probably seen the movie, and if you haven't, you're long overdue. The writing of this movie is the sharpest of all the Nephron films, and I would encourage any fan of the movie to pick up the DVD, rather than the VHS tape.

What makes the DVD so mauch better is that it offers several new things. Of course, we are treated to seeing several deleted scenes, of which a few of them really should have been included, but the real bonus lies in the option to watch the movie while Rob Reiner discusses what went into that scene, what prompted it, and what happened during/after the scene while the movie audio drops off a bit during the narrative. My wife quotes the movie a lot, but this additional background casued her to sit down, watch the movie again, and learn quite a bit more about her favorite movie. This DVD is pretty much a standard must have, and with the additional features, much more than a regular "just deleted scenes and widescreen/fullscreen" offering so many others usually do, this is well worth it.

Summary: My All-Time Favorite Movie!
Review: This movie is probably my favorite movie of all time. I am not usually one to watch movies more than once, but I watch this movie every year (usually during the holidays). It is clever, funny and touching and I think it's a great movie for men and women. It's great because I think everyone can relate to the characters and what they are going through. The chemistry between Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan is outstanding and I think this is Meg's best performance because she seems the most genuine in this movie. I can't imagine ANYONE not liking this movie...that's how great it is.

Summary: Gender Gap Without The Sap.....
Review: This review refers to the Special Edition DVD(MGM).......
A great romantic comedy that can be enjoyed by both men and women is a rare treat. This film is one of those rareties. Director Rob Reiner has us laughing at each other as well as ourselves in this story that lovingly highlights the inner workings of both sexes.

Harry and Sally(Billy Crystal/Meg Ryan) meet for the first time right after college graduation as they spend their first 18 hours together car pooling from Chicago to New York. They instantly fall for each other, BUT... neither one realizes that. Right away we see the difference of how men and women think, and how funny those differences can be. Upon reaching New York they part ways because theoretically "Men and women can't be just friends".

Over the years, they run into each other several times(destiny?),still not understanding the other's ways, but eventually become best friends, even trying to fix each other up, as they see each other through various relationships that didn't work out.Eventually they do begin to understand the other and feel themselves falling, but why ruin a good friendship with love and sex... right? How long will it take for these two to realize..."It Had To Be You"?

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan have a magnificent on screen chemistry, and they'll have you laughing and rooting for them.
Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher are expert at playing the well meaning friends. There are some wonderful scenes of older couples being interviewed that will have you rolling. Rob Reiner does a brillant job of bringing us this everyday world of the gender gap.

You'll also love the soundtrack for this film. Lots of old standards, performed by Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington and some really marvelous stuff by a very young Harry Connick Jr. Nora Ephron wrote the screenplay and was nominated for an Oscar for her outstanding work.

The DVD is great. It is in widescreen, Dolby stereo surround(2.0),the picture is beautiful with all the wonderful scenes of the changing seasons in New York, and the sound, including the music and the dialouge are pleasing. Some really nice Features are included, I very much enjoyed the "Making OF" Documentary with lots of commentary. You'll also find lots of deleted scenes that are fun to watch, you can have Reiner's commentary during the film, and There's a terrific Harry Connick Jr video. There are trailers, and French and Spanish subtitles.
"Viva La Differance!"......Laurie
