Summary: Don't trust the review; still relevant and hilarious!
Review: I am a teenager. I still enjoy(?) the joys(?) of high school. And let me say that Ferris Bueller's Day Off is still pertinent, as well as enjoyable.I've seen the ending numerous times on TV, but this very night I decided to watch the whole thing. I rented it with a friend and loved it. Tomorrow I will go out and buy the DVD. John Hughes was one of the precursors of such great writer-directors as Kevin Smith, and this film is evidence. It may have different focuses and some might find this difficult to interpret, as some reviews have said. I say "Bull." This film captures high school. Even if all the teachers aren't as boring, the administration is still spreading the same lies that the principal character does in the film. He tries for authority and only pulls off incompetence. With humor, light youthful cynicism, and carefree but intelligent views on life, I can attest to Ferris's own accuracy. I may not be as successful, but I see myself as a Buellerist(even if it wasn't intended). So what if the movie ends seriously? That's what high school is! There're good times, hilarious times. And then there's learning who you are. Coming to terms. I was moved by Ferris Bueller's Day Off. In a world where accuracy often means disgusting, hack films like American Pie, this movie captured school days masterfully. Films that take the act of growing up and make it a sick joke are insulting, in my opinion. American Pie featured the darker side of growing up. People who are self-centered and petty. What a life, to start in such a way. Ferris Bueller is shown to be human and moral as he speaks about his friends, however. His analyses are wonderful, and caring while not being sugar-coated. The film was true but tasteful, succinctly and accurately showing the trials of growing up. It's over-the-top, but anyone who was interesting in high school(and childhood in general), I'm sure, can attest to memories that seem larger-than-life. While it may be difficult to watch Ferris Bueller run up slides and jump on trampolines all to get home with a serious eye, one must admit that when one looks back at school, some things are like that, even if only in your mind. Ferris Bueller's Day Off works on levels that only one who is or has been young can appreciate.

Summary: Drops the ball
Review: This movie starts off with the promise of being very satisfying light entertainment. Broderick is undeniably appealing as Ferris, and there's fresh humor in his approach to life and to the viewing audience. However, as the movie proceeds, it becomes confused about what kind of movie it wants to be. Ferris seems to stop addressing the audience and the film shifts incongruously to his friend, who has reluctantly been persuaded to play hooky and ends up crashing his father's sports car. In a sudden shift of tone, the friend gives a monologue on his difficult relationship with his father - is this still a comedy? - and then sort of inexplicably decides "well, it'll be all right" anyway, without Ferris uttering a word, and without us finding out what happens when his dad gets home and finds his car trashed. Meanwhile, the character of the principal does his best to keep things juvenilely amusing. Ferris does have some fun in Chicago, climaxing with a parade in which everybody in the city seems to become excited by his lip-syncing to "Twist and Shout" as if they've never heard it before - an excellent recording to be sure, but credit the Beatles for that, not Ferris Bueller. In the end, we get the suggestion of a highly amusing comedy film that is flawed by its failure to carry through with its original tone.

Review: I thought this movie was excellent. Made in the early 80's, it still appeals to teens (like me) in the 90's. All the actors did a super job and I was never board or fast-fordwarding through this video. The bottom line is, you haven't lived until you have met Ferris Bueller.

Review: A quintessential 80s comedy, which for me, beats the Breakfast Club hands down (not that the Breakfast Club is a bad movie!) and stands as John Hughes best film, at least of the John Hughes movies I know. A teen flick like Ferris Bueller's Day Off appeals to the sensibilities of the teens of the time with a genuine understanding, aesthetic competance, and well-used humor, rather than the superficial mimicking, commercial desperation, and gaudy aesthetic disregard that characterize similar flicks of the 90s. Teen flicks today are marketed more to appeal to youthful self-importance, shallow self-indulgence, fashion trends, and insulting stereotypes that reveal more cynicism than understanding. Contemporary films that avoid these flaws are usually one-track crass humor shockfests whose jokes get old quick. I'm not trying to say, mind you, that a film like Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a "realistic" depiction or even exaggeration of actual teen life, or that John Hughes is flawless and universally understanding, but these are the reasons I feel a movie like this is rewarding, fun, and original compared to the trite byproduct of gen-x and post-gen-x marketing research.

Review: One of the best of the 80's "teen films, "Ferris Buellers Day Off" remains one of the most appealing, funny, well made films aimed at the 80's teen set. Ever confidant Ferris Bueller recruits his best friend Cameron, and his beautiful girlfriend Sloan to blow off school and spend a beautiful spring day exploring the sights and sounds of Chicago. Fun then, fun now, and the scene in the art museum is still the best part of the movie!

Review: I just rented FERRIS BUELLER this weekend. Wow! I cried! Seriously, I cried. Call me emotional, but I LOVED this film when it came out. It brought back so many memories that I cried. Back in the 80's I worked in a movie theatre and watched the "Twist & Shout" parade scene hundreds of times. This is the first time I've seen it since then. I think it's a great movie. It's hilarious, and unlike so many comedies these days, has great character development in the midst of it's lunacy. Sure, it's a light comedy. But the feelings about leaving high school and moving on are in there too. And of course, "Twist & Shout" is deliriously entertaining. As far as the DVD goes ... it's a good job. The menu is colorful and easy to use. There's not a lot of bonus stuff, but I found director John Hughes' commentary fascinating. Yes, I actually listened to the entire film with Mr. Hughes commenting! For film buffs, it is very interesting to learn things about how films are shot. Mr. Hughes shares stories about how they tried to make L.A. look like Chicago; how they filmed a certain scene quickly, and didn't get it quite right, because it was threatening to rain; how "Cameron" had problems keeping his eyes wide open because it was so bright.... etc. etc. Very interesting stuff. Thanks Mr. Hughes! You made some great comedies in the 80's and this is a great one! P.S. You can't mention FERRIS BUELLER without praising Matthew Broderick's performance. He's charming, cute, and hilarious.
