Summary: Annie Hall
Review: I'm not a fan of Woody's, but after watching Annie Hall I can clearly see why is that: he is a genius. No one can talk so seriously about psichoanalysis, sex and love, and make people laugh at those things at the same time. In no other picture you'll find dialogues like this: "Sex with you is a Kafkaesque experience" (Woody's girlfriend said after making love),"Thank you so much", "I mean it as a compliment." Or: "Have you seen an analyst?", "Yes, for 15 years".

Review: Woody Allen is a classic no matter who you are, or if you like him, you have to admit that. Even though he plays the same characters in all his movies. Watching Annie Hall I thought his views were funny, but his character is just soooo annoying, in this and all of his movies. Movies like "Celebrity" where he writes and doesn't act, are a lot better. God bless you Woody Allen for ya' writing and directing talents, but God help ya' if you can't act.

Summary: the film that got me back into Woody
Review: I had tried and tried and oh how I tried to enjoy Woody Allen films, but after being dragged to Hannah and Her Sisters when I was younger and sitting through a number of Allen's films, I just couldn't get there. I could only say that I had enjoyed What's Up Tiger Lilly and his segment in "New York Stories" called "Oedipus Wrecks". Annie Hall changed all this. Since seeing this movie 4 years ago, I'm now a rabid Allen fan and would count this as one of the top 20 films of all time. Maybe top 10 (I'm still working on this comprehensive list). Well, go on, you know you gotta see it.

Summary: What do you want, it wasn't his first play
Review: This is one of the best films of the 1970s, in some ways it defined them. Woody outdid himself, and yet it really was just the first of his "real" movies. Without this one, well, never mind, I can't bear to contemplate that. This is often rated as one of the best American movies ever made. I'd like to warn you that it has no chase scenes or shootouts, no hostages get taken, no wrongly-convicted criminals try to break out of jail, and no one says "excellent". It's just a good film. If you don't have an ounce of heart or have a poor ability to remember premarital affairs, you may not like it. Otherwise you will.

Review: Annie Hall is too long, and disjointed to be Allen's great one, it lags in places, but its still poccesses a certain charm, but his later movies are much better, like the overlooked Celebrity. For fans only.

Summary: The Last Comedy to Win Best Picture
Review: Woody Allen's ANNIE HALL is a small miracle. It is a hilarious comedy, a bittersweet tale of loss, and an opinionated glance at American culture through Woody's unique lens.Winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture, this is both the last of Allen's light films and the first of his serious ones. Many of Allen's films come across like plays on film, but this is full of cinematoc tricks. Split screens, direct-to-camera monolouges, an animated sequence, and a hilarious scene where subtitles say what the characters are thinking but not saying make this a one-of-a-kind comedy. Allen's West coast/East coast structure remind me of F.Scott Fitzgerald's THE GREAT GATSBY in the way that it suggests that New Yorkers, Mid-Westerners, and Westerners are inherently products of their culture and goegraphic locaton, and hence they are all doomed to unhappiness in any location but their own. It is an important cultural document. There are Allen's usual barrage of one-liners ("everything our mothers said was good for us isn't -- red meat, milk, sunshine, college . . .") and "high" cultural references to Beckett, Fellini, Capote, James, and a host of others. In a lot of ways, it is the prototypical Allen film, and yet I hesitate to say that because that makes it seem like one of many, and not the unique masterpiece that it is.

Summary: Clever, Hilarious Diary of a Love Affair
Review: Annie Hall is Allen's best film in my opinion. Keaton is the perfect counterpart to the Woodman's neurotic whining. The film is full of poignant beautiful dialouge like "Love Fades"...It rings true to life. The montage at the end is one of the best I have ever seen done, and is listed in a film book I had to read for film criticism class. There is everything to love about this film. Watch for Jeff Goldblum, Paul Simon, and one of the funniest sequences has Christopher Walken. A classic.

Summary: need the eggs?
Review: Well what a great movie. Enough said. About the DVD: I reallyenjoyed seeing the film in letterbox, and I thought the transfer wasdone very nicely. It is a real clean, sharp picture and I didn't notice any artifacts. One other note: I normally am of the same mind as the fellows at the Widescreen Review. But I have to say that their vendetta against Allen's films (regarding mono sound) is just unwarranted. These are dialogue driven movies! If I wanted bullets zinging by in my five-point-ones I'd put in the Matrix...

Summary: A CLASSIC
Review: When listing the greatest directors of our time, one cannot overlook Woody Allen. Quick witted and often times hilarious, I give Allen and Keaton both 5 stars for their performances in this film, which I consider to be the greatest romantic comedy of all time. A thoroughly entertaining film, done in a style that will keep you amused from start to finish, will make you laugh and maybe even cry, ANNIE HALL is by far Woody Allen's best film and a modern day classic. SEE IT AS SOON AS POSSIBlE!
