Summary: LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT..........
Review: I don't know why but this is cheaper than other versions. I can only guess it is the "wide-screen" thing. So what, once you get to watching it you don't notice the black line at the top and bottom. Heck, for the price difference it is a steal!!!!!
I adore Colin Firth and am really enjoying owning this wonderful DVD.
If you need a good laugh, watch this. The mother of these 5 maiden girls is a hoot. I love her. She's a scream. And, the cousin, Mr. Collins, he is so-o-o-o-o funny. I love this movie!
Buy it....... you won't be disappointed!!!!

Summary: Special Edition DVD is Horrible
Review: My wife and I own the VHS version of this masterpiece and absolutley love it. The story is fantastic and the cinematography wonderful....however, the special edition DVD is horrible. The colors are washed out with dark objects looking like blobs. I'm attempting to return the terrible DVD at this very moment. Stick with the VHS if you have a choice.

Summary: Wonderful
Review: If I was on a desert island (with a DVD player and I guess electricity) this would be one of the movies I'd insist on taking with me - and there aren't many I feel that way about. I don't rewatch very many movies and this is one of the exceptions, I watch it regularly - there aren't enough superlatives to describe it ... except for the shrill voice of the mother - altho she gave a great performance, the voice went a bit too far. Other than that, heaven. Now I've started a Colin Firth collection ...

Summary: Very nice production of this story but horrible DVD quality
Review: Confession: I did not catch this series on television, even in reruns (which seem to be every month on A&E). Watching it on DVD, I must say that it is very nicely done -- quite lively and splendid. The costuming and sets are great, as is the acting. Really classic British production -- high quality and entertaining, as well as fairly faithful to the book (a few changes here and there for dramatization). But unfortunately, like many reviewers here, I found that the DVD itself was a poor quality. Colors are washed out and the scenes often vary from way too dark to way too light. Outdoor scenes put an awful glow onto the actors faces, in one instance bathing out Jennifer Ehle's face entirely. I was continually adjusting my television set for brightness and contrast -- back and forth, back and forth. Great exercise, but I really just wanted to sit and relax, enjoy my knitting and the film. Pitiful transfer to DVD. I'm rather shocked the manufacturer would allow this quality. Beware of this problem and hesitate -- wait to purchase the DVD until you can be assured that the manufacturer has fixed this problem.

Summary: Great Film, OK DVD
Review: I have loved this film since I watched it on A&E on Saturday nights. I have the box VHS tape set, but it is getting worn out so I purchased the DVD set.

Other reviews have talked about the poor picture quality. The film is very washed out, but if you have a good tv with lots of options, you can compensate for it. It is annoying, but it doesn't make it worthless.

Summary: Special Edition DVD is not so special after all
Review: I already owned the original DVD to this wonderful movie. It bothered me that the credits ran every 50 minutes and that there were no extras, so I was so excited about the new "special edition" DVD. I ordered it right away. When I got it, I couldn't wait to watch the featurette... but first I had to watch some of the movie.

I was SOOOO disappointed! The picture quality was abysmal! The contrast was set so high that all the characters looked sickly. Also, their dark hair would just blend with dark backgrounds, creating just an all around terrible picture.

At first I thought it was just the DVD, but then I watched the featurette, which was fine. The featurette had clips from the film and it was so nice to see the characters looking robust and the backgrounds lush again.

My advice: if you must have the DVD, try to get your hands on the non-special edition.

I plan on sending a letter of complaint to the distributors, and would suggest others who are disappointed do the same. Perhaps if enough people complain, they will re-remaster it or un-remaster it, so it looks the way it should.

Summary: Best Jane Austen movie ever
Review: If you enjoy Jane Austen or the Victorian era, this is the one movie you must see. It's very true to the novel and very well done. It's hard to not finish the movie in one sitting (even though it's 6 hours).

Summary: A Wonderful Rendition of Pride & Prejudice
Review: The acting in this version of P&P is EXCELLENT. Jennifer Ehle's Elizabeth has her sass and cheek. She shows Elizabeth's gradual love for Darcy perfectly. The actress who plays Jane Bennett and Mr. Bingly are very well done. The mother and younger sisters are played almost too well. (The screaching of the mother gets tiresome after a while.) The stand out performance of this movie is by far Colin Firth. I did not know who he was, typical of Americans I'm sure, but I do now. He can speak clearly with his eyes. It is rare for an actor to have such a gift. An example of what I'm talking about is the scene where Darcy watches Elizabeth play the piano with his sister. Breathtaking!! I have, also, just had the pleasure to watch Mr. Firth in "Bridget Jones Diary." As far as I concerned, Hollywood needs to snatch him up with joy. You have made a new American fan, Mr. Firth. However, simply put, this is an excellent film.

Summary: Who doesn't like this movie!
Review: I just wanted to join the chorus of praise for this movie. I especially liked the Special Edition DVD with the "making of..." feature and biographies. Everyone that likes anything close to period pieces, Jane Austen, BBC productions, etc. should own this!

Summary: Best Film Version of P&P
Review: After I read Pride and Prejudice, it became my absolute favorite book and I really wanted to see a movie of it. I rented a lot of absolutely HORRIBLE movies before I came to this one, which is the best I have found. This movie stays 100% true to the book (which is why it is so long), and doesn't leave anything out or change anything, which was my biggest complaint with the other versions I have watched.

The casting of the major characters in this movie was absolutely awesome. You will become a big Colin Firth fan (if you are not already) when you see him as Mr. Darcy because he completely becomes this character and does it so well--anyone who has read the novel and watches this will know what I mean. The actors who play Elizabeth and Jane Bennet and Mr. Bingley also do a great job.

The only reason that I subtracted one star for my review is the casting of some of the minor characters, specifically Mrs. Bennet and the three younger Bennet daughters. Although these characters are supposed to be very annoying/obnoxious according to the book, the movie did TOO good of a job making them this way--it was actually painful to watch the scenes with these characters, they were soooo rediculously obnoxious, and I think the movie went a little overboard here.

Overall, if you are an Austen fan, this is a must-see, in spite of these minor mishaps.
