Summary: Wonderful dramatization of wonderful novel
Review: This version of "Pride and Prejudice", quite simply, gets everything right. Everything I loved about the novel is there in this production. Therefore, if you loved the book you will get to revisit the absurd self-involvement of Mrs. Bennett, the biting wit of Lizzie and the exaggerated snobbery of Miss Bingley. In addition, this production is expertly cast. Not one character seemed miscast. The actors playing Mrs. Bennett, Miss Bingley and Lydia (my favorite character) were a hoot! And what can one say about Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy? He is an 18th century hunk who can be both an insufferable snob and a complete gentleman. This production gives a (handsome) face to the character I envisioned all along. I have watched this production a few times now and I simply cannot find any flaws. The producers nailed every detail, which makes for a delightful viewing experience. Elizabeth can cut someone down to size like no one else, and she does it wil great gusto here. Truly a must-see film!

Review: This version of Jane Austen's fine novel, Pride and Prejudice, is really quite spectacular. The casting is splendid. The actress who plays Elizabeth Bennett's mother is absoultely hilarious. Her grating manner and voice really add to the character. Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy....

Well, thanks for allowing me that moment of digression. Colin Firth plays a wonderfully proud but intriguing Mr. Darcy. You find him snobbish in the beginning, but by the middle of the movie you are really rooting for him.
As with all BBC productions, the sets and scenery are marvelous.
WARNING: The "bonus" featurette was a bit of a disappointment though. Not a lot of information about the novel, the author, or the making of this movie.

Review: It has been many years since reading Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice but had not seen the DVD version until I rented it recently. After watching it twice, I HAD to own it! The entire cast was wonderful and the chemistry between Elizabeth Ehle's Elizabeth and Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy is what makes me want to watch it again and again. Of any DVD you own, make this one part of your video library. It reminds me of a richness, grace and politesse between people that is missing in today's society.

Summary: A complete success, a joy to watch
Review: Pride and Prejudice is my favorite novel of all time, as many other readers with pronounce the same. When I watched this version, I kept an open mind, knowing that many movies do not do a book justice. This adaption was superb, and was an utter joy to watch. A few small aspects were left out, but it is already a 5 hour movie, and these changes do not alter the integrety of Jane Austen's classic story. Not only was the adaption a delight, but the music, setting and actors came together to produce a seemless production in which any fan of the book would respect and enjoy.

Summary: Entrancing from start to finish
Review: Further praise of this wonderful production seems superfluous after all the other glowing reviews on this site, but I have to add my voice to the many others who have fallen under the spell of this excellent rendering of Jane Austen's novel.
I am amused by those who commend this series for its wholesome, family-friendly nature. On one level, they are absolutely correct. Certainly, it contains no violence, rough language, or sex and would make perfectly appropriate viewing for all ages. Yet, from an adult perspective, the chemistry between Colin Firth as Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet, the intensity of their performances, the restraints imposed by the customs of the time and the long, long buildup until they finally get together winds up the erotic tension to an almost unbearable level. Ehle is captivating, lovely and intelligent as Elizabeth. No surprise that she's the only daughter Mr. Bennet relates to as an equal. Colin Firth's performance is a wonder. Has an actor ever communicated more eloquently with his eyes? They are by turns pools of pain, of frustration, of longing and, finally, of warmth and love as he watches Elizabeth at the piano at Pemberley. Minor characters are perfectly cast. I particularly like Mr. Bennet, so clearly unhappy with the egregiously awful Mrs. Bennet. Hiding out in his study, Mr. Bennet is the 19th century version of Dad in the den with the remote. That's Austen's genius, I suppose--creating characters that we can identify with, despite the gap in time, place and social customs. Kudos to the screenwriter and to the wonderful cast for so skillfully conveying both the historical setting of Austen's story and the timeless humanity of her characters.

Review: The plot and acting on this DVD are strictly five-star. But the qualty of the video is distressingly worse than what was broadcast on PBS; quite poor by modern standards. You may be able to set that flaw aside as you become engrossed in the story, but it's inexcusable that you should have to.

Summary: No better Jane Austen Adaptation Anywhere
Review: Thank you A&E. Thank God for Colin Firth. This adaptation to JA's Pride and Prejudice is wonderful beyond words. I was trilled with each moment. Any true romantic would like this, and even those who aren't romantic will find it very interesting. This brings that dull old book you have to read in high school to life and to see Jane Austen's wit on screen and treated in such a classic manner is priceless. This is a must have!
