Summary: Those Were The Days
Review: Considered to be one of the teen classics of the 1980's, "Sixteen Candles" marked John Hughes directorial debut in the genre of teenage films. Starring teen queen Molly Ringwald, "Sixteen Candles" chronicles a special day in the life of Samantha, a teenage girl residing in Shermer, Illinois. Due to all the hoopla that has overtaken her household because of her sister's impending marriage, everyone has forgotten about Samantha's 16th birthday.

At school, Samantha is given a secret exam by a friend that delves into her deepest thoughts, especially when the topic is boys. When the test accidentally falls into the hands of her prince charming, Jake Ryan (played wonderfully by Paul Dooley) Samantha's life will forever change. Pestered by the school geek (Anthony Michael Hall) Samantha discovers that all good things come to those who wait.

While Dooley went into obscurity, many of the film's stars went on to become well-known actors and directors. Keep an eye out for a young John Cusack ("Being John Malkovich") as one of Anthony Michael Hall's friends, Betty Thomas (director of the "Brady Bunch" movies and former "Hill Street Blues" star) as Samantha's mother, and Justin Henry (the young Oscar-nominee of "Kramer vs. Kramer" fame) as Samantha's obnoxious little brother. Ringwald's really life-sister, Beth, plays her younger sister in the film.

I loved the film, however when Universal Home Video chose Image Entertainment to transfer some of their most popular films onto DVD, a lot of the special features found on average DVD's were not included. With the exception of chapter selections, there are no trailers, actor bios, animated menus, language selections, or anything else to make this DVD version extraordinary. However this films was one of the best films of the 1980's due to its' charms and great young cast. I seriously miss Molly Ringwald, and only wished that the adorable Paul Dooley could have become a bigger-name star. The ending where Dooley shows up at the church where the wedding takes place and surprises Samantha is so wonderful that I have to watch it over and over again.

"Sixteen Candles" is a true classic in the genre of teenage films. John Hughes (along with Amy Heckerling) is among the best in Hollywood that could capture the spirit, woes, and everyday life of an average teen.

Summary: A Classic!
Review: I saw this movie when I was in eighth grade and it ruined me forever. All us girls kept expecting a "Jake Ryan" in the Porsche to show up. The perfect high school movie (other that Fast Times) that I'll always remember and think of fondly. It really makes me think of simpler times when the biggest problem I had was if I could borrow the car to go to THAT party to see THAT boy. Also the beginning of all teenagers' love affair with John Hughes movies. He really was in touch with teenagers then.

Summary: What happened to the sound track
Review: This is one of the best 80's teen movies i can remember. Most of all i remember the sound track, which is out of print, the least i could have expected was to have it included. Kind of like a two for one @ an 80's flea market

Summary: Charming high school classic
Review: I'm not a fan of 80s teen movies so I wasn't looking forward to "Sixteen Candles," another sappy girl-gets-boy movie with the required cuddly ending; and that's exactly what it is. The difference is, this one makes you smile. Unlike the recent rash of teen movies, "Sixteen Candles" is a genuine classic supported by strong acting and a heartfelt plot. John Hughes, the master of 80s teen movies, is able to translate adolescent frustrations into more than flimsy emotions and juvenille infatuation. His engaging storytelling gives significance to the problems of the Shermer, IL high schoolers rather than diminishing them; whereas today, we roll our eyes at Freddie Prinze Jr.'s latest romantic caper and at Sarah Michelle Gellar's sexual trysts because there's little soul buried beneath their appearances. Even the fairy tale-like ending, which I normally would lambaste, doesn't seem far-fetched because we care about these people.

Kudos to the cast for creating such honest characters to frame the story. Everyone will enjoy Molly Ringwald's performance as new sixteen year-old Samantha Baker. Any high school girl can sympathize with her jumbled feelings of loneliness, inadequacy, self-importance, and, of course, puppy love. Samantha is wonderful to watch because she talks and acts like a teenager instead of a stereotype of a teenager. Anthony Michael Hall is also memorable as the lovable dork who tries to be suave around an older girl, and fails miserably (how many of those have we known?). Also look for elfin John and Joan Cusack who make minor appearances.

My one reserve for this movie is the offensive, and very unnecessary, charicature of an Asian foreign student whose only impact is an uncompelling subplot. That blunder aside, "Sixteen Candles" accurately portrays teen angst and uncertainty with a great deal of sensitivity. Oscar material this isn't, but you'll have a lot more fun.

Summary: Disappointed with the change of the soundtrack.
Review: I grew up watching this movie. It is the greatest movie ever made! I bought a copy of it on VHS and was appauled while watching, it seems like all of the music is different, except for the music at the end. I was wanting to purchase the movie on DVD in hopes that it was the original movie. I would like to know if the soundtrack is the same way? I, like a few other reviewers, have trouble watching this movie because of the changes.

Summary: I never get tired of this movie
Review: I'm watching this movie yet again, after seeing it countless times. I first saw it when it came out in 1984 - I graduated from high school in 1970, but this movie hits everyone where they live, no matter how old. I think all of us can remember someone like Samantha, Jake, the Donger...

The plot is so cute, the people are cute, and the script is hilarious - I laugh hysterically every time I see this movie. I've had the tape now for several years, and every so often, I have to get it out just to have tons of laughs. I even actually talk the dialogue out with the characters. I used to do dialogue from this movie with anyone that has seen it; my ex-hubby and I used quote the dialogue from it all the time, and crack each other up.

Get this movie and be prepared to roll on the floor.

Summary: Ringwald's BEST
Review: This movie is hillarious. It portays high school so well! It just takes the stupid things we did as kids, and magnifies them. I would go as far as to say that Sixteen Candles is the GREATEST highschool film ever made! I've seen it more times than I can count!

Review: Ok- for any of you out there who want a good, funny, and easy to relate to movie-- this is it! This movie definitely tells the story of many of today's teenage girls, even if it was made in the 80's. It is the best movie that I've watched -EVER! Summary: SIXTEEN CANDLES ROX!
Review: Sixteen candles is like, the best film (besides the Breakfast club, of course!) It's funny, witty, and lets the viewers glimpse life through the eyes of your every day teen; crushes, worries, family. Molly Ringwald is a great actress, and you should at least rent Sixteen Candles, even if you don't buy it!

Summary: 80's High School At It's Best!
Review: This is one of my all time fav. movies. It's high school at it's best. The idea that the "POPULAR" guy could actually be interested in the younger and not as popular girl, is the stuff of dreams. :) Anthony Michael Hall brings the comic relief and the sisters wedding is down right "fall on the floor" laughter. A great movie..and, an all time classic!
